Bob Costas: Decision to Give Caitlyn Jenner ESPY Award a ‘Crass Exploitation Play’

Caitlyn Jenner is being honored by ESPN with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the upcoming ESPYs, a move that has been met with much controversy. There was a hoax about Jenner getting the award over an Iraq war vet, but people are still upset at Jenner receiving the award over more deserving people, despite Jenner being a very famous sports name who’s being heralded for her courage to publicly transition.

Bob Costas is one of those critics, saying on The Dan Patrick Show today that while he wishes Jenner “all the happiness in the world” and is encouraged by how much more tolerant America has become, he’s not on board with the decision.

“Awarding the Arthur Ashe award to Caitlyn Jenner is just a crass exploitation play,” Costas said. “It’s a tabloid play. In the broad world of sports, I’m pretty sure they could have found –– and this is not anything against Caitlyn Jenner – –I’m pretty sure they could have found someone who was much closer to actively involved in sports who would have been deserving of what that ward represents.”

And while he didn’t deny it took courage for Caitlyn Jenner to come out, he believes ESPN made the decision for the “gawker factor” and could have found more deserving candidates.

Giving Jenner - Bruce or otherwise the Arthur Ashe Courage Award is like giving the award to Steve Young Athlete of the Year for his play on the football filed over 10 years ago. The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is a sport-oriented award, even though it's not limited to sports-related people or actions, as it is presented annually to individuals whose contributions "transcend sports". Someone in the current realm of sports life or that impacted sports or the community on some level.

Yeah, there have been other people that have received the award but they still impacted community of sport on some level. Even Nelson Mandela.

Still, I understand the notion that ESPN is just grabbing for the attention.

Your position and Costas's and not entirely irreconcilable. To me it can be both, I can be happy Jenner is being honored but also acknowledge the less honorable side of the show. Let's put it this way, would they give an ACTIVE transgendered athlete this award? They have had opportunities and they have probably not even considered it. There would be controversy and a real face of someone who wasn't nearly as prominent or privileged. They wouldn't touch her with a 50-foot pole. Here they have someone who is safely removed from competition and a second-moment celebrity, so they are taking the low-hanging fruit. Think ESPN is progressive? LOL, look at the knuckle draggers they employ and pay the big bucks to.

Howard Cosell 10 years after he retired, Tommie Smith and John Carlos 40 years after they made waves, some guys who were on United 93.

There is a well-established history of this award going to people not "actively involved in sports".

Nobody gave any fucks about this award at any point in time over the last 20+ years. The fucks given have nothing to do with the actual award but what it is recognizing

Caitlyn is a grown-ass woman who ain't stupid. If she feels exploited let her speak on it. Let her reject the award or use the platform to challenge ESPN. That's HER fight. Nelson Mandela winning the award was a cheap publicity push for the upcoming release of Invictus later that fall. Warner Brothers got a slew of free advertising and prestige for their big Clint-directed film, and ESPN got to exploitatively tie a worldwide hero loosely into its awards show for ratings. There were unquestionably people more directly tied to the world of sports than Mandela that year who deserved to be rewarded for courage.
