"What skill level of cooking puts one into the " can cook " category?"

Vs can't cook? Of course it varies from person to person so im asking what is it to you?

To me can't cook = person that cooks a lot of boxed and pre cooked/ packed foods.

Basic = things like spaghetti, fried chicken, baked chicken, steak ect...

Intermediate = shit like thanksgiving/Christmas dinner and grilling well

Advanced = Bobby Flay n dem, aka risotto and lobster Oscar and shit like that.

But to some basic cooking will put one into the can cook and to others it will put you one into the can't cook. What say ye?

ppl who can cook follow recipes well. like my auntie (old school Black woman) and my bestie (professionally-trained chef) and other good cooks i know.

some ppl who can cook seem to do so w/o recipes...but that's b/c they memorized that shit. a few of them make up recipes from whole cloth...but even they memorize that shit.

Everything else she makes tastes like shit. She doesn't know how to pair shit and she's barely competent in the kitchen. Once, while staying with us, she greased a pan to cook bacon.

I like to EAT, and it is fiscally and nutritionally irresponsible for me to not cook my own food. Ain't like I get off work like "OMG! I can't wait to go home and cook dinner!!!"

The shit has to be done and it has to be done well, because I like to eat well.

I can cook, but I mainly cook because I like to eat. If I could afford going out most nights or have a personal chef, I would.
The people who like to cook will make cupcakes and then bring them into work and not eat any.

If I take the time (and money) to buy the ingredients, cook them and clean up afterwards. I am going to eat as much as I can. You ain't getting none unless we're related, having sex or contributing ingredients, drinks or cleaning up afterwards.

when you are pulling out a cutting board on a regular basis and cutting up vegetables, making your sauce from scratch ie;, curry, spaghetti, etc. I been reading this book series titled "Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking" , so much I didnt have a clue about.. I can basic cook though I'm not making crème brûlée or souffles, lol

I couldn't do sauces until I did a few recipes to get a better feel for them. Now I can do curries and spaghetti sauce from scratch pretty good. I also try to pay attention to sauces when I eat out, trying to figure out the ingredients. Its like dancing, riding a bike or sex, takes a concerted effort and a lot of practice and patience.

its such a cluster fuck. I need to start making one just so I can get more organized. I usually start by taking a look at what protein prices are. From there I pick the proteins then start building sides. But I am going back and forth to the same aisles so many times. Fucking mess. I mean it works. Just costs me a bit of time.

I shop without a list all the time. And I rarely forget anything but that's bc I have a good memory not bc I'm a good cook.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 0

if you cant just take a look at what is on hand and whip something up with out a recipe then you cant cook. If you need to look up a recipe every time then you cant cook you can just follow instructions.

But imo recipes are good starting points. Start off with them recipes because after so many you will notice similarities between them. You should be able to apply techniques and flavor profiles from different recipes to create your own shit.

if you arent taking the recipes and actually learning something from them then you really arent cooking. There are so many different versions of recipes. Ingredients can be substituted to recreate dishes. But its the techniques that usually remain the same.

It's cute if a person can successfully tweak a recipe but I don't think that's a necessary component of being able to cook well. It can also be about knowing when to leave the recipe alone.

Do the shit taste good? Then whomever cooked it can cook. Period.

fuck you.

nah you gotta understand what you are doing. If I am watching someone make a spaghetti sauce and they throw in a pinch or sugar or a bit of butter. Then I ask why they did that and they cant tell me. They might as well be a robot.

into a pan of hot oil last night. Hot oil exploding everywhere. Luckily no fire. She was trying to make beer battered artichoke hearts.

We can't cook.

I didn't miss a beat cooking sausage for my baked ziti on the other burner though B)

"Why the fuck would you do that?", as we were both glad to not have 3rd degree burns, and more concerned with cleaning up oil off of our new wood floor.

I think her thinking was that the oil level wasn't high enough, and pouring water in was a way to raise the level without adding more oil. I watched her pour it in (out of a freshly emptied beer bottle), and kind of thought it was weird but didn't think anything of it until it started combusting.

Our level of cooking is that we not only require recipes, but recipes that explain every step in excruciating detail. "Add battered artichoke hearts to preheated oil" was clearly not enough information.
