That was truly a special period in Black music. It was my awakening to the potential that artists, who were roughly my age, had. The sad part is that only certain people really understood and appreciated the movement while it was going on. Many "fans" of those artists jumped ship when those albums came out.

the soundtrack for my work day lol
the key to happiness is not being rich; it's doing something arduous and creating something of value and then being able to reflect on the fruits of your labor
A person can sort of put together a picture of this era...probably moreso as more books are published..(I suppose somebody will do a D'angelo book soon)

Another thing I realized is hardly any of the nucleus of that movement was from New York. I wonder if their mostly being from other places made them gravitate towards one another.

the one in the live "Chicken Grease" performance on Rock's show? made me think of Bin's post about that era watching that shit. D isn't even 1/10th of that anymore and I loved Black Messiah, as an album
this was a dope read though. I hope they are able to find those tapes of those sessions man, damn what a wonderful time that was.
the shit about Common losing the lead of Carmen to Mos and them messing with him was hilarious

But it's like......30 pages too short. I need way, way more. I need stories about each individual album, not just a quick general overview of their time there. There's gotta be 3,000 more stories. I guess I should just read the artists' books (?uest's, Common's, Erykah's...) to get more detail. But oral histories are typically way longer and more detailed. I already knew the Dooinit story (it's a great one, to be sure) and all that.
Anyway - still a good read. I'm just such a fanboy of this era that I fiend for more.

(or lack of relationship) with Kanye interesting.
"I knew that the next renaissance wasn’t going to be Roots-centric. Seeing Kanye with the marching band from that movie, I knew I wasn’t going to be central to the next movement anymore. He was going to be the leader, and I would have to be fine with it."
There was a Q&A post here several years ago where (from what i can remember) ?uest answered a question about Kanye by basically saying that he thought they would have a connection of sorts but for some reason, never did.
Considering Kanye's relationship with Common at that time and even ?uest's relationship with Jay-Z, I've found it curious that he and ?uest never really worked together or had any type of notable interaction back then.

I find that ?uest always seems to have....I dunno, sly? comments about/for Common. Their relationship seems interesting to me as well though I have nothing to base it on outside of the fact that just about every comment he made about Common in this article (and some from other ?uest quotes I've read in the past) is kind of ... sarcastic. I'm not finding the word(s) I'm looking for but you know what I mean.

walking musical encyclopedias? (I know that's true of Quest, and I think that's true of Kanye, but I'm not totally sure.) Sometimes you don't click with the people you have the most in common with.
