Question is, what platform. Depends on what Fiat ends up doing is my guess. Still, it would be interesting to see what they could do with a car sized closer to the Mustang and Camaro

I'd like to see more true innovation from them similar to when they brought out the current iterations of the 300. I like what they're doing with the 200..... They need to ditch all these reboot badges and create something new..
That's IMO though....
Heck....bring back the Magnum even! They killed that too soon IMO....

It filled a void for the "regular guy" who wasn't into all the luxury aspirations of the 300, but when the Pork Chop Charger came around, it was a wrap because American drivers and wagons.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

A 23 year old grad student who probably doesn't need a car too old because he will probably not be good on maintenance. It can be sporty (2 or 4 door). Just hauling people.

ideally from someone who you know for the maintenance history, imo.

at $5k, w/ reliability as the main concern you're kinda going to take what you can get, although others may have more specific examples.

Alternatively: Scion xB or xA if you can live with the styling (those are also Toyotas), Matrix. I don't think you can find a Fit of any vintage at 5K yet. That would be my first recommendation for "first car"

Just "drive it, get the oil changed, routine maintenance" classics

there's a part of me that also would say 1st gen ZX3 or ZX5 Focus but I don't know enough about them, except that I still see a lot of those around (the ZX4s/ZXWs of course).

Can't remember having any real problems, with the exception of needing to replace the alternator and an inner tie rod. Alternator was about a year after the car was paid off and the warranty was up, and the tie rod was likely due to sliding into a curb one winter. Fortunately that thing broke after she got home one day and I went to pull into the driveway. Had it broke while she was driving it would have been a much more tragic tale

This was in my old 91 Escort. I had just turned out of a gas station and was heading towards the on ramp when it snapped. Thankfully I was only going about 40mph so when the driver's side tie rod broke I was basically steered to the shoulder and came to a stop.

Good condition examples can be had for less than $5000, cheaper if it's the C230 hatchback.

the problem is when issues arise it can be pretty costly depending on what it is.

I'm looking for an older (i.e. 1992-1995) MB 400E for a commuter car. I can find 300E's and 190E's all over the place, but the 400E has the 4.2L V8 in it, upgraded brakes, and they run forever with a regular oil change.

regular ass maintenance (oil change, plugs/wires, brakes, etc) can be done by any regular joe schmoe mechanic. It's when you get deeper into shit like fuel pumps, coil packs, head gasket, etc that it gets costly.

Oil, plugs, and brakes on my M-Class isn't bad (plugs were more expensive more 'cause there's 8 of them and I had them use a better plug than the OEM uses).

and then it's limited to a few 300E's and two 190E's. Those weren't bad to work on at all which is why I want a 400E for myself (unless I can find a pristine 190E 2.5-16, which I'd love to have).

Over the past week I've been glues to the Chemical Guys or Ammo NYC trying to figure out the best wash/wax/polish/trim products to get for the Fusion. This is taking me back to my SL2 days when the car got washed every weekend without fail. The L200 may have been washed once a quarter as it got old, and definitely much less after the 1st engine failure.Seriously trying not o pull the trigger on a DA polisher.

Sad thing is I son't do anything on my wife's car, just on (bad) principle
