I have an issue with it regardless of if women are doing it willingly and/or coerced and even if it were regulated i.e. "legal" I would still find it problematic as it encourages, enforces and reenforces the idea that men are to, by patriarchy, control women and view them as property.

5. "the "macho" or "slick" or elements"
In response to Reply # 0

either

a) A man is so "macho" the women (usually the old-time women) fall under his "spell" (or get abused enough to be scared of him) and they'll do ANYTHING for him (and think he'll scare the "customers" so much that the customers will not "hurt" his ladies.

b) a man is so "slick" he can "paint" an "enticing" picture to "gullible" women (who usually are in a precarious situation) that they think being his "girl" won't be so bad.

This might seem like weird things for people to find "cool" but in poor neighborhoods, the "sparse" avenues for "making it" make stuff like "pimping" seem like a "doable" hustle.

The same way drug-dealing looks like a "doable" hustle in poor neighborhoods.

but without being 'Playery, sure I get the appeal.

It's extremely overly misogynistic, let's get that out the way. Rooted in patriarchy, all of that, for sure.

But for most boys, or men, who look up to pimps in some sort of way, don't do so because they're violent towards women, or because they take advantage of women who aren't in a position to defend themselves. The more than most of us find out about pimps, beyond the Don Juan, Pimpin Ken types...the more we lose respect for them.

As a High Schooler, I thought it was amazing because most of my friends were too shy to even know what to say to a girl at the mall to get her phone number. Knowing that there were men who could verbally get chicks to do ANYTHING for them, AND pay them? That was some superhero type shit. Of course, we were picturing them doing this with great looking 21-25 year old women, and not teens or crackhead types.

Beyond that, the flashiness appealed to my young sensibilities. I had a 98 Corolla. Seeing them in shiny ass Cadillacs, with gaudy clothes and shades was just fly. And knowing (well, thinking) they got paid enough to get to this point just from having the strongest mouth piece in the world was prop-worthy.

With Don Juan, Pimpin Ken, and anyone else like them...we just loved hearing them talk, because it was hilarious, and they spit out catchy shit effortlessly. They seemed to have no kind of worries, and felt a lot more playful and laid back than the dope dealers or gang leaders that we saw.

As a whole, most of us never actually looked up to pimps, or aspired to be one. And we knew they were completely wrong. It was something like a fantasy world that we separated from our true morals.

I don't like it....but I get it.

People admire others who are charming. Charming people get others to do stuff for them. It's a unique skill-set. Part of me resents the shit outta ultra-charming people. The people that everyone loves and they never seem to really do anything for anyone but themselves. Nonetheless....their skill-set is more powerful than my resentment (which they would call jealousy).

Politicians, salespeople, pimps.....it's all the same skill. Getting people to do what you want them to do and to ignore their own best interests.

on some "American dream" / "everybody is either a pimp or a ho" (or its newer cuzzin "how is prostitution different that regular dating if in the end you're spending money for time/sex") steeze

the idea that selling yourself for sex (or brokering such transactions) is (allowing for) taking control of YOUR body and meeting a need that is gonna be met one way or another

people got all kinda perspectives

those stories my auntie and my daddy told me about him
were fucking cool as shit
if youre a 20 something black man from the hood

but of course his pimping pretty much led to
a cycle of incarceration and drug addiction
and adverse psychological effects which my dad and my auntie
still carry

Whether to pimp or become one of his girls?

It was so common in Atlanta/Decatur. Probably still is.

A fairly well known pimp would come by the drive thru where I worked as a teen and tell me you dont have to do this you know. Can I call you?

Really sweet and nice with it... that charm up close was kinda scary.

Its more of that bullshit that falls under the false perception of being cool. You're a "real" man if you running shit, controlling women, making money of the control of women.. etc, etc. ad nauseam.

Like a lot of bullshit in the world its been romanticized by pop culture. Muhfuckas quick to fight if you say something about their momma but they have no problems pimping/disrespecting someone else's mother.. Patriarchy bullshit

It was cool to have women obey your every command, it was cool to have lots of money, cool to dress really nice, and have power.

He'd long gave up that lifestyle before meeting my mother but even after he'd stopped pimping, he kept his hair relaxed for years! ((which I was embarrassed by)) But my pops hair was better than most women's. He kept his nails filed and polished. And my pops still wears mean ass suits.

I remember one time we went to Miami for the Super Bowl, Bears vs Colts and Snoop and Bishop were down there. We got into so many clubs and parties just off of the strength that my pops ran with Magic back in the days. He still gets his respect.

Pimps these days??? Wayyy different. Most are junkies, and their women aren't bad. Back in the day the most beautiful women were getting pimped. These days? They don't need pimps.

My brother is actually serving federal time for pimping out chicks in the strip club. One of them turned out to be under age. My pops was so disappointed.

In response to Reply # 38

i know it's a standard viewpoint that sex work is not something that should be shamed or frowned at. and i get that.

but where do pimps fall in with that group?

if legalized would the pimp be the 'government'?

how did things change?

sex workers weren't always underage, wayward, drug-filled young ladies?

why would a responsible, beautiful, smart, intelligent sex worker need a pimp?

A pimp usually makes sure the woman is getting paid, makes sure she didn't robbed, usually sets her up before she starts making money, buys her clothes, teaches her, and exposes her to more money...

and if she does need protection, does she manage to find a 'good' pimp?

what's he like?

no misogyny?

strictly business?

It depends on the audience. And the audience for these cases is the low income and getting MONEY by any means will always reign supreme in that realm.
