1)I used to work in a room with 3 white attorneys. My office has thing thing called 'flex time' where attorneys can take some time a month and not be in the office provided they stay electronically accessible. Recently they made the flex rules stricter much to the dismay of the the attorneys. So one of the attorneys is like, hey guys this is the new theme song for the office...and starts playing "No Flex Zone". Of course they giggle through the chorus but then the rap starts and there's an awkward silence in the air after the first nigga and ho. By the 3rd nigga, he stops the song and is like...sorry guys, i had no idea the language was so......offensive.

2) Now i'm in a different location and i sit outside the "no flex zone" dudes office. They've gone through different phases of gambling in his office...poker, blackjack and of course the cee-lo phase. Mad awkward hearing these guys rolling dice and praying one of these fools don't say something to me.

3) There's a guy in my office that randomly yells through the day "BAKING SODA, I GOT BAKING SODA!!!"

so there is this new girl. annoying. white. overly chipper. unnaturally chipper. and i knew it was serious when she made a joke about her "happy meds" and "sad meds". so yeah...i could already tell her life was all kinds of special.

so we're in these groups and its me, some other people and a West Indian lady. Jamaican i think, but wildly inappropriate all the same. so we're talking about something and she flat out says, "well that's retarded." as a person sensitive to the plights of all people i cringed inside when i heard it. and i look up at the white girl, and yep...she's got that look on her face. that i'm offended look. then the West Indian lady says it again, and i'm like awwww shit.

come to find out the white lady has a child with a learning disability and they have to see specialists and all other shit. and i don't know if it was ever escalated up the chain, but the potential was there.

There's a lot of diversity in terms of nationality and religion and a decent amount in terms of ethnicity but it could easily get clickish and uncomfortable as a result. It never does, people have almost a heightened sensitivity to that kind of stuff. There is one black reporter who seems to enjoy race jokes but he is funny as hell, nothing uncomfortable about it to me.

But a lot of times someone will ask a question they know is not going to go over well and in a way that isn't tactful. Other times people will phrase things stupidly and they are just aloof. This morning someone asked a coach of a team who blew a lead in regulation (but won in overtime) if he was concerned his team was "destroyed" after they lost the lead. Who, as a PROFESSIONAL WRITER, chooses that word?

There is also a lot of trailing off and incoherent questions, like people are still somehow nervous about the every day process or in awe of these guys whose sweat we smell every fucking day. I don't get that, really, I mean it happens sometimes where you're trying to get at something and can't, but it shouldn't happen regularly. Usually it dissipates into giving the player or coach an out to use some cliche, like they will turn the question back toward "bearing down" or "concentrating on the next game" or whatever bullshit ass bullshit. Why ask these throwaway questions? We know what cliches are coming, don't INVITE them.

Reporters are a goofy and socially awkward lot, too, and by contrast TV people are a little more gregarious but goddamn are most of them DUMB. Their life's work has been whittled down to spending three hours on their hair and three minutes reading a card and they seem awfully proud of that. When they have to improvise to form a question or an observation, it's a lot like watching a turtle try to get up off his back.

The whole process is weird and stilted and impersonal if you ask me. Talking to someone one-on-one in a relaxed setting or over the phone is *so* much different than dealing with someone in a scrum.

Sound mixers are lucky. We get our own rooms so I get to stick to my own. I get the sense that my lack of socializing comes off like I think I'm above everyone else so occasionally I force myself to leave the room and chit-chat.

Two weeks ago I made one of my attempts. The first water-cooler conversation was about a scheduler who's first language is Portuguese (pretty sure she's Brazilian). In anycase....just a bunch of ignorant 'speak ENGLISH' comments. She's really not that hard to understand. Then the conversation turned to the recent 'fuck her in the pussy' thing which is a hot topic in Toronto right now. Again, just a bunch of locker-room knucklehead talk. Then a co-worker brought a newborn baby into the room and the language was wildly inappropriate. As soon as she left...they criticized the baby's parents (the father has nose-rings and tattoos.....Oooooh). Really? We're gonna start bashing someone's newborn baby now?

So there it was. 15 minutes of racism, sexism and baby-hating and eff words around said baby. Enough time for me to remember why I stay in my own room.

you know i don't work in an office but i get periodic check-ins with my editors and one of these women either has it out for me or just flat out doesn't have the grace god gave her to actually communicate via the email channel. it's always real gruff, short, barely responsive and i'm always thinking i'm a second from being told to never write for the organization again.

like daily i go through this shit. i can't wait to get away from this company.

we took time out to do some charitable work to build a wheelchair ramp for a 101 year old lady in the middle of Souf Memphis. We were lagging on time and had crew members from another spot come help us. This young white dude, clearly on board with FOX's media agenda, said something inappropriate when one of the people that came through was Mexican:

"Oh, now that he's here, he's gonna get it all done by himself in fifteen minutes so we can get away from here. Awesome"

The chick he said that to was from New Zealand and she saw my face and could tell I heard it and was about to check dude. She pushed him and said that shit wasn't funny and he's immature as fuck. Then he looked at me and scurried along. His cubicle is next to mine and I think every time he sees me he thinks its going down, lol.
