Their cartoons been epic since Batman TAS. Their live action shows been dope since Lois and Clark. Marvel can't even compete on the small screen although the original Xmen cartoon did have a pretty decent run.

Justice League/Justice League Unlimited is still "that show".

Justice League is still up there. DC animated stuff in general has been more compelling for me than what I see from Marvel.

Iron Man had Stark as a kid. They had a second XMen where they were all teenagers and it made ZERO sense. Even the original XMen series had issues though not as bad as their recent shows.

For once, I'd like to see Marvel do a show with a more "mature" audience in mind, like DC did with JL/JLU.

Like Lobo is obviously Wolverine.

Rampage is She-Hulk.

Steel is Iron Man with a hammer like Thor (damn, you biting TWO characters?)

Imperiex is Galactus.

Damn, DC, stop biting!

And yes, I know Marvel bit Thanos from Darkseid. So what.

Just a small example: http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/09/10_bizarre_dcmarvel_parallels.php

Add to that Shi'ar Empire being the Legion of Superheroes. Or Fantastic Four being Challengers of the Unknown. Or Dr Strange being Dr Fate.

Etc.

In general:
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/01/18/chaos-and-order-at-dc-comics/

-DC ran Dwayne McDuffie of of Justice League in about 2009 because they kept interfering with his plotting at literally every turn (one problem w/ writing J in general is that every editor on the Superman, Batman, etc. books has a say). He rage-posted about it on the DC message boards (which I no longer think are up) and they fired him
http://comiccritics.com/2009/06/16/the-sad-strange-tale-of-dwayne-mcduffie/
http://comicsalliance.com/dwayne-mcduffie-fired-from-jla-for-saying-too-much/

-This (which was a big deal):

-This (I know it's Liefeld, but still):
http://comicsalliance.com/rob-liefeld-quits-dc-on-twitter-names-names-and-points-fingers/

There's lower level stuff (for example, Jerry Ordway talking about the massive and constant changes DC made to his attempt to revamp the Shazam! family in 2009 in "Justice Society of America", to the point where he had to redraw his Mary Marvel scenes twice because no one told him Mary Marvel was going to be drafted by Darkseid and get the black leotard and pink hair outfit):

As much as he is an "other", part of him just wants to belong, even if only temporarily.

He's very much relatable. It's just the "hip" thing to do now to crap on Superman.

The alone orphan thing yes, but outside of periodic temptation to kill someone when they've really done evil(which Batman does better) he always does the right thing.

Its why, imho, self contained stories like Red Son or Kingdom Come do a better job since they tend to presumably have freer reign to play with the mythos.

Primarily in the form of General Zod and others questioning his loyalty to humanity, the character's own doubts and fears about not being human...this is all stuff they've written dozens, if not hundreds, of issues about over the last 20 years.

This is one of the key themes of "Man of Steel", for crying out loud.

It doesn't really fit the type of films DC is doing.

And they've shown they don't get how to do the comedy-action Marvel style (see also Green Lantern).

It's Harry Potter with superheroics, but no one seems to get that.

cast someone 18-24 who can play a teenager.

That's what they've done the last two times Captain Marvel/Shazam! was adapted for live-action. It's also what Sony did with Tobey MacGuire and what they wull be doing doing with Asa Butterfield for Spider-Man.

Filmation seemed to like it tho - they used "Shazam!" as the basis for their adaptation of "Masters of the Universe".

That aside, the Marvel Family's appearance on "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" were pretty good (Cap became a recurring character), even if they went straight 1947 with it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh0m3Nh1gHY

These were done recently and hit a good balance of classic Fleischer-esque style and still feeling modern:

that would make sense.

But Superman I (and to a lesser degree II) are good movies in general which, given when they were made and the general tone of the comics within a decade of when they were made, focus more on story, character, and humor than "Man of Steel" does.

I mean, come ON...he took Lois flying!!! She sang a damn song about it!

but after Millers TDKR and the 89 film, and continuing into the 00s with the Nolan trilogy (as flawed as it may be in retrospect) Supes just never had the "cool" factor

he's not sympathetic, he's a goody two shoes, Kryptonite is basically the only way to weaken him

idk, he was a better fit for the past IMO

No matter how old I get, Superman can fly, throw tanks, shoot heat lasers out of his eyes, and breathe in space. He wins, all day, er'ry day.

He's an alien who (a) tries to hide in plain sight and (b) wants a place to belong.

He's from the country, I'm from the country...I just relate to Superman better than Batman and his dark, brooding world of shadows and dementia.

Plus, he has one of the greatest supporting casts in American pop cultural history.

what's great about comics is there's something for everyone and even in individual characters there's enough complexity for us to at least learn about them

Superman was written like that in Dark Knight Returns, but even Miller now says that was a huge mistake on his part. Superman has always been a character based in moving forward, but looking back often. Some things should change, and some shouldn't.

>the golden boy & his superficial flaws...no depth
>

His flaws aren't superficial. He's a being that could rule the universe anytime he wanted, and nobody could stop him. But it's not in his nature and it never occurs to him because of his innate goodness. Within this, even though everybody wants to be him, he still has moments where he questions if he's doing too much or not enough. With a person of his power, that's an incredibly compelling concept. And if all else fails, he can kick anybody's ass he needs to.

>it's why Bats is his best foil, Bruce is a man who busts his
>ass to change the world, Supes is an alien that uses his
>innate privelege to mostly protect the status quo

Batman and Superman are compliments, not foils. In a lot of ways, Batman is less human than Superman is. And he's never been about the status quo; at his core, he does what he can to make the world better, and asks others to do the same. That's not something that's exactly common when you look at it all around. I don't care who you are, sometimes you need to visit your parents and have your mom cook your favorite meal. It just so happens that Clark does this after stopping The Time Trapper from erasing reality, instead of after losing his PowerPoint slides on the train.

Waid Flash run

Gail Simone on Birds of Prey

Marc Andreyjko on Manhunter

He'll, Landry on Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade

Plus, DC is worlds ahead of Marvel in age-appropriate books for the under 10 crowd... That doesn't concern most of us, but as a dad, having books like Tiny Titans, Superman Family Adventures, the Jeff Smith and Mike Junkel Shazam! books, Sholly Fisch on Scooby Doo Team Up, ANBTBATB, and DC Superfriends... Marcel's got Son of a Genius, but not much else. I really appreciate DC's efforts in that area

In the roughly a decade I've been reading comics, DC has managed to burn bridges with most of my favorite guys who've written for them, and fail to find regular work for a bunch of others.

Scott Snyder is the only recent great writer I can think of who's worked for DC but not Marvel.

Marvel on the other hand has managed to scoop up Hickman and Aaron, and keep seemingly good long-term relationships with a bunch of other top-tier writers.

he's too fucking powerful. they make him more and more powerful, till it's just if he's as fast as the flash and the strongest guy ever....why is he even getting hit?

people love the reeve movies, but even then...c'mon. reversing time, looking at walls to rebuild them....kissing someone to make them forget. if he could fly that fast, why couldn't he catch the missiles lex sent

if u ask me, marvel is making cap a bit too strong, but anyway, at least he has weaknesses

also, marvel knew how to introduce their characters...all of whom are pretty much 2nd rate. each movie had a hint, a nod, a wink. who didn't have a geekgasm, the 1st time coulson told pepper...just call us shield.

dc is just ...batman...or hers's batman...here's another batman cartoon, just finished an good batman trilogy.....now here's a superman movie.. with batman....then they started cramming all the members in it. like they were gonna do years ago when comm was sposed to be green lantern.

marvel fed us, gave us foreplay, showed concern, and made love to us before the pounding.

dc is treating us like a 2 minute booty call quickie. like we're groupies and the act only has one night in town.

And even then they started losing it in the 90's with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin (which most would like to forget ever existed).

I will say this though: Man of Steel's level of violence pleased me greatly, especially the final fight between Supes and Zod. It would stand to reason that two beings that powerful would create the level of ruin they did in a no-holds-barred all out fight. It looked a lot like the fight between Captain Marvel and Supes in "Clash" on JLU.

I think Man of Steel is where DC finally got Superman right.

film.

As a subsidiary of Warner Bros, Warner wasn't really apt to letting DC that far into their creative process of making the films until Marvel Studios started doing what it did. It isn't as if "Superman Returns" and "Batman and Robin" had any sort of fidelity to the tone and style of what was being done in the books at that time.

WB just finished moving ALL of DC Comics to LA down the road from them so that they can better focus on movies and TV shows.

(Marvel, for the record, is still based in NYC. Dunno why WB thinks location matters, but hey...)

They made him significantly less powerful following "Crisis on Infinite Earths". He isn't strong or fast enough to fly around the world backwards to time-travel anymore.

They've also placed more emphasis on the yellow sun's powering his abilities, putting him in situations on other planets or in isolation, etc. instead of resorting quickly to Kryptonite.

super hearing
sees through shit
fire in his eyes that are as hot as the sun
cold breath
breathe in space
super strong
can fly

like wtf? sorry , heroes need to have a little bit w of weakness to have them overcome something. that's not a hero, that's a God. who can beat him? a person that's as fast as him isn't as strong as he is.

>be like oh are we talking about the red suit superman or the
>blue one....

no, regular-ass Superman with the blue suit with the red "S" on it. Before the 1980s, his power set and power level were a bit on the ridiculous side. Ever since then, the writing teams have tended to do a decent job of (a) making him not as ridiculously strong and (b) pitting him against situations/villains that actually challenge him.

If you can sit through an Avengers film without this sort of complaint, you've already co-signed two characters that could whoop Superman's ass (and perhaps a third, counting Iron Man's Hulk-buster suit)

the rest of the population knows of a dude that's
>invulnerable
>super fast (which if he's invulnerable, he doesn't need to be
>that fast)
>super hearing
>sees through shit
>fire in his eyes that are as hot as the sun
>cold breath
>breathe in space
>super strong
>can fly

Man of Steel dedicates one half of its run time to explaining Superman's powers and legacy, the other to pitting him against three beings as strong as/stronger than him because they share his powers and have warriors' hearts.

Superman is not the only superhero in the DCU (or the Marvel Universe) with his level of strength and stamina. Wonder Woman, Shazam, Martian Manhunter, and - if you want you cross the border - Hulk and Thor can all hold their own against Superman. Wondie and Shazam in particular, both being not only as strong and fast as Supes but in possession of magic powers and weapons that would affect him like it would anyone else.

Aside from that, Superman's strength, speed, and stamina may be of superhuman levels, but they are finite. If you have enough power, you can knock Superman's block off.

http://i.newsarama.com/images/i/000/110/744/i02/Superman-vs-Shazam-Trinity-War.jpg?1375825417

There are plenty of villains as strong as/stronger than Superman. You'll recall one of them, Doomsday, killed him.

Superman's not overpowered if you can match him against feats that can challenge him. Isn't that what Marvel is doing with the Avengers?

meaning the only way those people can beat hi is if he doesn't use his speed.

my point is. the reason he's lame is panels 1-4 he's super fast invulnerable blah blah blah

then gets punched by wonder woman...ok what happened to his speed? lol
even the kryptonite bullet, yeah it'll kill him....but he can hear the gun cock and out run the bullet.

In their races over the years, and after Barry's resurrection, Supes has never outright won in a foot race against Flash (at least not one that had been published).

Despite the infamous radio show catch-phrase, there are bullets in production now that Superman is not faster than. And you could always distract him and then shoot him.

I'm really intrigued by this Convergence reveal, but the potential all rests in what they actually do from here on out. If everything sits on a shelf, it probably won't matter.

>Wonder Woman,

Nope, she can make him pause for a moment, but her strength level is below Supes.

>Shazam

Arguable, but he -has- beaten Supes before (and also lost to him). Since Black Adam is as powerful as Captain Marvel, he would be another being capable of sending Supes to the hurt locker.

>Martian Manhunter

Fights with J'ohnn end in a stalemate with Supes. He's as strong and as durable.

>and - if you want you cross
>the border -
>Hulk

Has no known limit to his strength. The angrier he gets, the stronger he gets. He's really in a class all his own when it comes to strength. A fight with Supes would likely do nothing more than piss him off to the point where he would crush Supe's skull. Plus, Hulk is also incredibly fast and agile when he needs to be, there will be no escaping him.

>and Thor

Definitely arguable. Captain Marvel theoretically bests Thor having derived his abilities from multiple Sky Fathers. Hercules' strength being called "Class 1000" where Thor's at Class 500 when enraged, Class 250 with the Belt of Strength, and Class 125 under normal conditions. Add to that the rest of Cap's Godly mix and you have a being that should be able to devastate Thor... This means he's no match for Superman.

Darkseid can do this.

What was that story, The OMAC Project, where Maxwell Lord possess Superman and he and Wonder Woman spent a whole issue fighting it out? She held her own. Plus she has a magic sword, and Superman accidentally cut hisself on it.

Pretty sure they've fought in something newer, but I didn't read it. If her strength level is below Supes, it would mean he's at 90 and she's at 85 or 80.

And Mary Marvel. And Captain Marvel Jr. And the new kids they introduced to the Shazam! Family so that everyone wasn't white anymore.

But really, only Billy or Adam's ever going to go up against Supes. If they had Mary clock Superman across the jaw, fanboys would riot (even though it is made clear over and over again that the Shazam! beings share the same power level, so long as only one of them is active at one time; otherwise the power is split.)

I know they did a great job of explaining the science behind the hammer and lightning, but does that mean it doesn't count as magic? That was sort of what I was basing it on.

it should be pointed out that the island Superman lifted was of rock/crystal that had elements of Kryptonite, but was not as strong as pure Kryptonite. Otherwise, he would have doubled over in pain the second he landed on the island.

Yes, he lifted the island, and then fell to his near-death after finishing (based on how Superman's powers work and how Kryptonite works, it's not as terribly implausible as it seems).

Also, as fast as Superman is, he's not fast enough to save "everyone". Hundreds of stories have been written about Superman being just too slow to save this person or that person. One of the first Superman comics I ever read had Superman be just too slow to save Jimmy Olsen from a heat-seaking missile; a supervillain stepped in to save him, absorb the missile, and then try to kill Olsen herself.

The "why didn't Clark save his dad" thing has been heavily debated. Yes, he could have saved him, but his father told him not to, which is the point of the scene.

There's nothing wrong with preferring lesser-powered heroes, but that doesn't invalidated the ones who do have superhuman abilities. Moreover, none of these heroes would exist were it not for Superman; they'd be making crossover movies about Flash Gordon and Tarzan.

DC Comics issue though is that they treat their "creative teams" like shit and undermine their work...

And over the last few years that issue has become very clear....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....
