This was written before I read the police report posted above. The description my wife and I read was simply that he "fondled girls" so it stands to reason that it may have been a case of "boys being boys".

The police report, however, says he did it while they were sleeping, so with that new information I've changed my view of what happened; this was definitely not a case of "boys being boys".

Columnist Dan Savage ripped reality show matriarch Michelle Duggar on Friday for openly campaigning against anti-discrimination protection for LGBT Arkansans while keeping secret the actual molestation committed by her son Josh.

“Just the hypocrisy of Michelle Duggar, demagoguing and demonizing LGBT people while at the same time having covered up for and protected her son — who had actually molested at least 5 little girls that we know of — is just staggering,” Savage told MSNBC host Chris Hayes. “It’s galling.”

Savage’s remarks were a reference to the elder Duggar lending her voice to “robocalls” last year calling for Ordinance 119, which allowed trans residents in Fayetteville, Arkansas to use locker rooms or bathrooms according to their gender identity.

In the calls, Duggar warned against “males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female” being allowed near their daughters in “their private space.”

But it was revealed earlier this week that by the time she recorded the calls, her son Josh Duggar had already fondled underage girls — including his own sisters — when he was 14-year-old. But instead of being arrested, Hayes said, the younger Duggar was sent away from the family’s home for “hard physical work and counseling.” No charges were ever filed.

On Thursday, Josh Duggar resigned his position at the Family Research Council after confirming the allegations, and the family’s show, 19 Kids and Counting, was pulled off the air at The Learning Channel a day later.

Hayes said on Friday that he could not imagine how Michelle and her husband, Jim Bob Duggar, could let their family go on national television given the nature of the secret they were keeping.

“As a parent, it just gobsmacks me,” Hayes said. “It gobsmacks me to do this to your kids.”

However, both Savage and Hayes expressed unease with what they described as a form of “delight” taken by some of the Duggars’ critics.

“We have to remember, as we talk about this, that five little girls — at least five little girls — were abused and molested,” Savage said. “And there’s nothing here to take delight in or to celebrate.”

“I also have seen that tone creep in in some places, and found it pretty gross,” Hayes said in agreement.

Sure you get him some help, counseling, remove him from the home… but then what??

Does he ever come back? Do you just write him off, get him his own place??

1. Question both kids separately.

2. Remove the abuser from the house asap. That may mean he has to stay with a relative or family friend without kids. If none of that is available, go straight to the police so the abuser can be removed and taken to juvie.

3. Call the authorities right away. That could be the police, youth and family services, child welfare or any state agency. The authorities are NOT a pastor, a stern uncle, a basketball coach, a nigga from "scared straight." Anyone who wants to handle sexual abuse "in house" just wants to cover shit up. The child needs concrete punishment by the justice system. Not their tv taken away

4. Extensive counseling by a licensed mental health professional for everyone, the abuser, the abused, any exposed children and the parents. Not a pastor, not a coach... see above for who is not a licensed mental health practitioner.

5. If the abusing child comes back into the household after much counseling with consent most importantly from the uncoerced abused child, they should never be left unsupervised with their siblings and they should have to remain in counseling until they leave the house. That may mean an adult baby sitter even for teenagers.

I'd have gotten the boy and the girls some help and likely some separation if it was needed and I'd have punished him if I thought he needed it. But no way I'd call the police on my kid. I can't see doing that here bc the CJS does a piss poor job handling juvenile offenders. And as a young BLACK boy? No way. Not for this.

their son from the justice system. I'm 'mad' that the system worked in his favor where I'm not sure it would've worked so well for my kid. But based on the little info I have bc I'm not invested enough to dig into this case I think they did the right thing by their son. I'm appalled that the family went on to take some of the stances it has taken on issues related to child safety and ethics and shit. With this kind of secret there's no way they should've put their family in the public sphere unless and until they were prepared to front these bad facts.

i would've agreed w/you before i spent 5 yrs working as a criminal defense attorney. but now w/the exposure i've had to the CJS...no way i'd hand my kid over to the police in this case. i'd probably have done whatever possible to keep my kid out of the CJS - by any means necessary.

and yes, i'd be concerned for my other kids mental and physical well-being. i wouldn't be convinced that handing my son over to the police would be the best outcome for my other kids either. not in a case like this.

so i get what these parents did and i'm not 'mad' about it. my 'outrage' is limited to the hypocritical statements they've made knowing the secrets they held.

and i too have heard horror stories from kids who've been involved in the CJS - too many to hand one of mine over to them. not if there's ANYTHING else i could do. i'd do anything to keep my boy out of the CJS. anything.

but i'd also want to protect my daughters from their attacker - not that handing the boy to the police would accomplish that.

i dunno. beyond not giving the boy to the cops i dunno what i'd have done and i'm not saying i agree w/everything this family did. but i agree w/the decision to shield the boy from the CJS.
