my coworkers like to talk about tv shows around the office. today at lunch several of us were about to discuss the Mad Men finale but 2 of us haven't seen it yet and asked that the rest of us not discuss it b/c they didn't want it spoiled. one of them is still at least an entire season behind. the other is only a few episodes behind. i thought it was unreasonable of them to expect the rest of us not to discuss the finale b/c those 2 hadn't seen it yet. they were clearly in the minority w/in our group as most of us had seen the finale. i suggested that they remove themselves from the conversation b/c they were being unreasonable.

what do you think?

generally how long can ppl expect folks to honor their wish to avoid spoilers? i think it varies - this MM finale is a big deal, a somewhat pivotal moment in current pop culture. the finale aired on Sunday and today is Tuesday. i understand waiting a day to give folks a chance who hadn't seen it Sunday night. but i think it's unreasonable to expect folks to wait MONTHS to discuss the finale openly b/c one person hasn't seen it yet.

i haven't seen the last few eps of last season's 'Orange is the New Black'. i would not expect this same group of coworkers not to discuss the season in my presence just b/c i haven't seen it yet. instead if they discuss it i will remove myself if i don't want the season spoiled. i think that's fair.

I don't think there should be spoiler rules for anything that isn't recent... that's on you to tune out spoilers ( I find it easy to forget if I truly want to forget something) or just watch the damn movie/show already.

since I joined twitter I knew to avoid the internets when any popular show is on. Not a big deal. I dont think anything has been spoiled for me yet. Im just glad that awards shows are finally starting to air live on the west coast. It made no sense that they are filmed here and tape delayed. That meant I had to deal with my TL being taken over for 6 hours instead of 3.

Part of the equation is letting people get around to watching it so you actually have someone to discuss the show with. So 1 week to catch up on DVR, 2 weeks to let people avoid opening weekend hustle or to break a 13 hour season of tv into reasonable binges.

If the majority of people in the office saw it, I understand. My issue was with 2 people in my office that watched 13 hours of House of Cards the weekend it came out.... most people don't have time for that so loudly discussing it in the office is messed up.

Also folks that aren't even on the current season should be used to avoiding show conversations. The convos and analysis are why I finally had to catch up on Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. It sucks seeing a new (to you) episode and having nobody to talk about it with because everybody else is a season ahead.

I cant' tell someone what they should or shouldn't post or should or shouldn't say...if I don't want something to be spoiled, I mute keywords, or I ignore threads or posts, and if it's in person, I walk away and say "don't tell me guys!!" but I remove myself...I don't expect others to stop (unless we are at brunch! then i'm like woah guys!! chill). at the same time, if someone asks me not to spoil it during a convo, I will either edit my convo or say "i'm about to talk about this so you should leave!"

I think it's rude to spoil something no matter how long it's been since the show/episode aired. I have a friend who for whatever reason didn't catch The Wire when it was on. His excitement over certain big moments in the show is palpable, and I would never ruin that for him, I don't care that it's been seven years since the final season. I will either save my conversation(s) about it til later if he or another non-Wire watcher are around, or politely ask him to step away while we discuss it. I have no idea what circumstances caused him to miss it the first time around, and it's none of my business. Maybe he just didn't have the time. Hadn't heard of it. Whatever. I'm not gonna be a dickhead because I remember how awesome it was for me to watch it the first time around.

I do think that in certain situations it's up to the person who hasn't seen it yet to simply step out of the conversation because I do understand how exciting it can be to discuss, for example, the Mad Men finale immediately after it takes place. But I think you're a real dickhead if you just continue talking about it when someone makes clear they don't want it ruined for them. Lunch is a situation that's kind of unfair to that person, they were invited to lunch yet you're asking them to step aside for half of your lunch hour while you discuss it? Weird to me.
