caught him 2, maybe 3 times at the once-great River Blues fest. Not exactly the scene you were describing but not bad for a white kid from the suburbs.
Used to play cuts from the Frozen Alive record regularly on my blues radio show too.

the compilation of mid-60s recordings made in Europe, produced by Willie Dixon and with Fred Below on drums, is probably still my favorite blues album ever.
