"No celebrity should get a pass for Domestic Violence."
Mon May-04-15 10:57 AM by -DJ R-Tistic-

Yet, the Mayweather fight this weekend made me realize once again how people use it against certain celebs, while giving others a pass for it.

One girl I saw on Twitter said she hates Mayweather because he beats women, yet someone called her out for obsessing over Chris Brown the day before. Plenty of folks who mentioned the domestic violence AND the fact that the fight was "boring" would bring up how much they love Tyson, who was of course accused of DV as well.

Hell, some folks who only mention DV for Chris Brown still love James Brown. It goes each and every direction, and it feels like many folks only use it against celebs who they already have an issue with, or either those they were on the fence about. They'll even excuse it for those they love enough..."maybe she gave him herpes!" "Rihanna is crazy, maybe she deserved it!" "Ray Rice's wife spit on him! That's ultimate disrespect!"

How do you all feel about it? Do you always separate the actions from the talent? Do you judge it off being a one time event vs a recurring theme like with Mayweather? Do you only take it to the level where you won't even watch their performance if they're like Milton Bradley or even Ray Carruth?

on one level or another.

I really don't care about their personal lives enough to let it decide whether or not i will 'support' them bc i don't view it as 'support'. I view it on me being entertained.

Anyone i consider myself a fan of, is because of their talents in their specific area. Doesn't mean I support or even care about the rest of the stuff they are involved in.

it's not just a case of "sincerely held beliefs" here.

I wish he were just a dude with some dumb beliefs. even just a famous dude with some beliefs. like I wish Floyd were JUST a studio gangster.

As an active participant in enacting harmful policy, I can't give him that plea cop.

they just some good boxers. if you try to root for them as people, well, it's like a fight between solid stool and diarrhea

this argument just lacks so much context

is he wrong? no

but is it wrong-headed to make it a deliberate malicious act against women? yes

Manny's mother puts weird hexes on his opponents from the front row. This is the woman that raised him.

Manny prays fervently before and after his fights. Not a quick shoutout to God without whom none of this would be possible, but legitimate and self-effacing Catholic shit. I bet he is kneeling on rice right now for losing to Floyd.

Floyd's father beats his woman and got Floyd's mom hooked on crack. This is the man that raised him. Context.

and yes, women's rights in "developing nations" is something that i have long paid close attention to. from india to indonesia...especially when it involves evangelical dickheads..like Pacman/Tim Tebow/xyz athlete on a mission to rescue the uncivlized dark savages from hell ( the same bullshit Mother Teresa was on)

*shrug* i'd call out an indian boxer if he was on the same bullshit, his "good intentions" be damned.

that goes for a lot of my favorites, too. musicians, artists, athletes.

shit, when I was reading Herbie's book I was hoping he didn't cop to some fuck shit like that in it... LOL, thankfully he did not

(obvious joke alert) Floyd ducks and dodges his rap sheet like he does punches. That's why he'll never endear anyone to him.

Unlike Tyson, who owns it and has made a concerted effort to be a better human being over years.

but Piss Brown, Based Mayne, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen (I used to fuck with dude BEFORE the tapes came out) all these dudes... keep up the 'tensity (© Basa Dogg), don't just pick on the Black ones, don't just pick on the "not so good looking ones". let 'em all out to dry.

Piss Brown, I'll admit was at one point my favorite bit of schadenfreude... only because of his (male) Stans/defenders (on here)

now I am close to feeling sorry for dude, because he can't get right and some folks go a above and beyond the call of duty with dude. but that whole "squeaky clean, wanna be like Mike, he's the chosen one" shit went out the window real quick.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Kelly Preston and Charlie Sheen have both said it was an accident. She picked up a pair of his pants. She didnt know there was a gun inside the pocket. The gun fell out and discharged. The bullet hit the toilet and she got hit with shrapnel. He wasnt even in the room when it happened.

Charlie Sheen is a huge asshole. But this rumor has to die already. There are a hundred other things to get upset about.

Some seem to give you a pass based on your age, or if it only happens once...and especially if you ask for forgiveness and seem genuine. Chris Brown got clowned for crying at the 2010 awards, but plenty folks seemed to feel like he was sorry. Even though he did a lot of damage later from other events that showed his craziness.

I can understand why Floyd gets more hate than most...seeing that it's been like 12 incidents, 5-6 different women, and then the fact that he'll never own up to it and just call it "allegations." With that, I feel a lot of folks will give him a "pass" (depends on what you consider a pass) until they actually see a video of proof, which is what made so many folks hate Ray Rice, even though a lot of them had never heard of him before. Sadly, that's how it feels a lot of times...videos or at least picture proof are what really make it stick in folks heads forever.

he did serve that rape sentence. Even though he said he was innocent and did not rape that girl. There were about 100 other things that he never was arrested for. So basically it was karma.

But yeah like you say he redeeming himself and is very open and honest about his troubled past. Mayweather been beating on women for 10 years and shows no remorse. He wont even answer questions on the topic. Fuck him.

"LENNON: It is a diary form of writing. All that "I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved" was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically -- any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace. Everything's the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. I am not violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence. I will have to be a lot older before I can face in public how I treated women as a youngster."

or appear to be changed. Although I did see some folks this weekend say that DV is one of the few unforgivable acts/sins that they'll never give a person a pass for...along with rape, and abusing kids and elders.

I usually don't judge celebs talent based on their personal lives, and it usually has nothing to do with me wanting them to lose...although it may lead me to rooting for those who did overcome a lot in their personal lives, if that makes sense. Like, I won't say "I'm going for Manny because he's not a woman abuser like Floyd"...but I will say "I'm rooting for Brett Butler because he defeated cancer and is still out there playing" or "_______ lost his son last week, I would like to see him win this game."

writing off an entire person over their particular brand of sin or transgression or whatever

I fully believe in the importance of compartmentalizing "sin" from "sinner"... I know shits been used a lot in disingenuous ways by some mean Christians towards gays...but setting that whole craziness aside, in every facet of life, I try to live by the "hate the sin, love the sinner" rule.

We got to support everyone in their good sides, even if they still have bad sides.

but i do find it harder to do with athletes since most athletes job's are to be physical with people. it gets weird TO ME at the point where they are using their unique physical gifts that they make millions off of to hurt people physically in their personal lives.

that's probably hypocritical of me to feel differently about an athlete than, say, a singer, but i mean, you KNOW how physically dominant you are.

that said, no one should be laying hands on anyone. talk it out or walk it out.

than music artists or others.

As a sports fan, i rationalize it because my entertainment value depends on their contribution to the teams success. I can block it out better in those 2 hours theyre competing in a game as a opposed to a music artist who i cant block it out(ie R Kelly). Their music comes on i can ignore them by turning the station.

Also the more i like their music, the easier it is for me give them a pass.

Biggie is my favorite mc of all time even though im sure he hit Lil Kim more than once.

With folks like Big Pun, barely anyone in the public knew about how crazy and destructive he was towards his wife. His whole image was the nice fat guy. If that had hit the light, people woulda really cheered when he died.

Can we separate the art from the artists?

http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/just-the-two-of-us/e/5-can-we-separate-art-from-the-artists-37439885

I think we all try to justify why we give certain celebrities passes for heinous stuff they've done versus other celebrities. I am unsure how to resolve that conflict. But recognizing my own hypocrisy in the matter is a step in the right direction I think. Most people don't acknowledge their hypocrisy. That's when I get upset.

he's the ultimate bad guy and his life goes completely against the moral belief that good people should get further ahead

super wealthy, super cocky, 48-0, AND a woman beater? people can only accept 2 (3 at the most) of those, not all 4

R Kelly was deplorable behind the scenes but he keeps a pretty low profile and isn't actively trying to piss anyone off (no pun intended)

if Floyd's record was 46-2 people wouldnt have cared about him winning or losing Saturday, they'll be satisfied with just one loss that will humble him

""Even if you can't drive 10 cars at one time you got people that got 10 cars," Mayweather said in a Showtime documentary, 30 Days in May, a production that listed Mayweather as executive producer. "So, you're able to keep maintenance on 10 cars. So, I feel that as far as it comes to females, that same thing should apply. If you are able to take care of 20, then you should have 20.""

thats not someone who has learned to respect women

Maybe it's because Suge is scarier out of them?
Snoop had some fuuuuuucked up lyrics in the 90s
Ice T too

Suge just tops the murdering mofo list
But yes Dre is still on that list...esp since he seems roided up lol

In response to Reply # 0

Not boycotted in their bad shit, but boycotted/blacklisted in anything they're involved with, just because it's them...

Society would fold

Most people who sit on the internet and trash famous ppl or make ppl famous for their transgressions or reprehensible opinions or poor choice of words would themselves never be able to survive the same type of hyper microscope they undress others with.

And no I've never beat a woman. Never intend to. I'm just saying.

Judge the action, not the human. Boycott the sin, not the person.
