"Statements that turn you off from a persons opinions on music"
Fri May-01-15 11:46 AM by double negative

"i only like music with real instruments"
"drum machines don't have soul"

I turn the fuck off when I hear that horse shit. Electronic music is super fucking vast there is something for everybody and the influence goes beyond the club. Radiohead would not be possible w/o electronic instruments.

anway...when you hear_______ you think "this person doesnt know a gotdamn thing about music"

?

i discount most of what they have to say about music (including HH in some cases) b/c they tend to be easily/overly impressed when it comes to music other than HH.

case in point: Common's Electric Circus album. IMO the majority of ppl impressed by that album are not familiar w/the various genres touched on that album. if they were more familiar i doubt they'd give the album a pass just for incorporating so much non-HH music.

see also: Yeezus. same thing there.

fuck you.

pop-country is an utterly worthless genre and i will defend to the death my right to hate it. electro-pop is pretty goddamn boring, i mean the more fragmented electronica scene didnt thrill me but i could dig aspects of it and certain artists. i think we are talking more sub-genres than genres, i guess, but there are some that i think have little or no redeeming value. reggaeton is fucking trash, 99.5% of it and the .5% doesn't justify the existence of the rest. i do like grinding a chick but listening to that crap is a high price to pay

Precisely because of how he incorporated afro-beat, LA electro, noise rock

I feel HH hated on that album precisely cause it didnt sound boombappy and how common looked in that era. I also smdh when Common speaks badly about that album now

Its my second favorite Com LP and his third best

said while a live band was playing a damned nice rendition of Wes Montgomery's "Cariba" by a dude trying his hardest to impress some chicks.

I had to edit.

I am NOT a fan of the radio format known as "smooth jazz", aka the house "Songbird" (Kenny G song) built

even if I recognize there was a period of Kenny G music I actually dig. I don't really think it's "JAZZ!!!!!!" per se as much as it is "jazzy"

(he used to basically make R&B with a saxophone player in place of the singer)

old-head neighborhood nigga said it to me.

on my porch! of all places.

he was talking about the music he could hear coming out my house.

I think he thought he was trying to show how legitimate his taste in music was.

I immediately purged out everything in my mind he's ever said up until that point.

I get angry every time I think about it.

when i hear people use the word "prophet" to describe him i want to go all tuco salamanca on their ass and just punch them in the eye until they convulse and die.

one time i was at a party talking to this guy. he was an interesting cat, kind of hood (grew up on the west side, was wearing a big ass champion sweatshirt) but he had become an LAC public defender. granted we were kinda drunk but he was like "to me tupac and big are the malcolm and MLK of our generation, that's what we had." that made me physically sick, like i was one breath away from vomiting in this dude's grill

and that's not even to diss Drake.

if Drake's talent works for you to esteem that high then all power to both of yall. I'm not denying dude's talent in songwriting either.

but when I hear Drake I hear a teenage angsty version of Phonte. I know I'm biased as hell being from NC, but dat bol guut! If you love Drake and don't even peep Phonte, then nah.

and I am very well aware that this state could in and of itself put me into similar categorization for making this stated opinion.

>Phonte. I know I'm biased as hell being from NC, but dat bol
>guut! If you love Drake and don't even peep Phonte, then nah.

sort of a "teenage angsty rich kid" version of Phonte, who totally steals Lil Wayne's rapping voice pre-sizzurp slurpage

and it's funny, that on the surface, there is actually a lot (for me) to like about Drake. I thought his video for "Started From The Bottom" was brilliance

I can't hear his verse on Drake's "Poetic Justice" without thinking of a certain someone

and "How About Now" was pretty ill

but the persona, man. I just keep thinking his rap career is a huge joke and somehow I'm not in on it. Almost like the rap version of Jamie Foxx (the musician)

forget the whole "he's emo, girls like him too much" bullshit, I think that whole "whiny rich kid" my issue with him

as for Phonte, he is the pre-eminent SOLDIER OF FORTUNE who fought "the good fight" in the Dark Ages of Rap ('00-11). he's mostly moved on and I'm happy (unlike a number of other folks) but I will always appreciate what he's done as a rapper. and I dig his work with +FE a lot (to the point I'll actually go out of the house and see the dude perform, no Earl).

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

now, we all have opinions but I HATE when people shit on whatever is hot at the moment or considered a classic by most people.

They think it makes them a purist.. when honestly, it makes them an asshole.

because there are PLENTY of little-to-no talent artists that have hits IMO, especially in an era where celebrity stauts and attractiveness trump actual ability to carry a tune or perform in a live setting.

because I think Get Rich or Die Trying is a perfect example of an album overrated only because it was popular. it's a paper tiger.

and I'm almost going to say it about Usher with Confessions too. I mean, I liked the album... but goddamn did ol' Egghead fail to deliver a proper follow up. He been fuckin around for years, letting BUMS come in and taking his spot.

I think he might be coming "home" again. but "OMG" is about as embarrassing as some of Common's diversions from the script

I mean, even laymen can tell you "this shit is so good" without going into details about how something was EQ, or how the hi-hats were hot, or all that bullshit

but the discussion ultimately becomes about everything other than the music.

I may have been guilty of this, but dogg. I listened to Lil B, "just to see what all that fucking hype was about" (© Tyler) and decided that I needed to filter a bit before forming an opinion. I also found that I actually like his album called "I'm Gay". I still think it's his best work.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Hella my type, 26 years old, all that. But when we were all drinking and started talking about music? The STUPID shit that came outta her mouth??!??

It started with her saying the South has way better rappers than the East and West Coast. Said "The South got T.I., Jeezy, Young Thug. All L.A. got is Kendrick. All NY got is Jay-Z." Then...after getting roasted, she changed it and said "The South and the East Coast got way better rappers than The West Coast! What do you listen to in the club? What do you play in the club? It's always from the South!!!"

Then, she said "All the best producers are from the South!! All the beats you hear in the club are from the South!" I asked her to name two South producers that are the best right now....she said "umm....HIT BOY!!!!"

http://tiny.cc/yj5mxx

Then, she kept going!!!!

"Dr. Dre??? He ain't even that tight, and he just started gettin money!! He only got big because of Eminem!"

It just got worst, and worst, and worst. Then, she started talking about dating, and how L.A. guys are super wack and don't pay for women on dates. I told her, "if I took you out and you started saying dumb shit like you just did, I would leave your ass there with my bill too!!!"

man. Eminem. no.
his best work was done well before Eminem probably thought to even rhyme words together

I'd debate it being the other way around.

It's easier for me to slap together some synths, stuttering hats + 808-ish kick pattern with obvious drops and churn out an instrumental fir for the radio than it is to make something "underground" or even just instrumental hip hop shits (think Alphabet's Heaven, Flying Lotus, etc...)

I've heard Hip-Hop and/or techno as well and they may be more common today but the "I like everything except country and heavy metal" is the classic one IMO, the one I grew up with...

Sure, I check for their reviews just because... who else out there is even reviewing these albums?

But calling Jlin's new album 'Best New Music', while saying Lapalux new shit is trash is just too goddamn subjective and qualified.

It means that what you put into them is what you get out of them. If you put soul into them, you'll get soul back; if you don't have it, there's no Magic Curly Chest Hair Glide button on the drum machine to make it have a certain sound or feel.

In response to Reply # 62

it can definitely happen but there are logistical obstacles and when it does happen it feels remarkable for a reason. i call it the data effect, that android from the second star trek, it's hard to make something artificial feel organic and when it does happen it's got a partially beautiful, partially creepy feel. i think a lotta people were doing it but no one really noticed until daft punk came along. i even think some of neil young's most touching songs are on trans, but at the time it came out people didn't understand it. hell in part i dont think neil understood it.

In response to Reply # 0

Watching some of the comments about TPAB and Earl Sweatshirts latest brought it home for me. I get if you don't like K.Dot's voices or wish i hadn't been a faux live version, or you don't like the interludes or the tupac poem or Earl's beats. But thinking your reaction is a definitive barometer to the album's quality? Don't buy that. Especially in those cases where it's pretty clear that those choices fit into the artist's vision for the album's message.

Just IMO though.

... Off top fuck you, unless I find you attractive in which case I'll play along. I might even co-sign the fuckery coming out of your mouth in the name of UNITY.

Other fuck shit people say that turn me off:

Hip-Hop isn't what it used to be.

Rappers today talk about the same stuff.

Hip-Hop was best when the New York ran shit.

Insert white rapper in the Mac Miller, Sage Francis, Aesop Rock vein are the best rappers and talk about more than insert popular rapper.

In response to Reply # 0

I see many heads who conveniently forget how much they ascribed that "killed hip hop" title to Puffy when Bad Boy was on mega status. How they forget that the Bad Boy era is when cats got on that money, money, money, talk and how that particular era was the start of the end of the grimy boom bap era. How that era had many of the "keep it real" rappers changing up their style for radio hits. How that era opened the door for the two fingered keyboard hits of the late 90s, early 2000s which produced numerous dated albums. When I hear cats around my age saying that bull, I wanna just roll my eyes.

Who did that???

No, really... I can't think of anyone off the top of my head.

Like???

I think that statement was more about how hip hop took a focus off of lyricism and these Trance-inspired EDM stutter hat/stupid drop beats took off.
