Maybe folks will finally wake up regarding weight loss and stop trying to exercise their way out of a crappy diet.. SMH. Sugar and carbs are literally killing folks.

will not produce the desired result after a while. Gotta switch it up.

I'd not ever run on a treadmill as my primary cardio for an extended period. I'd only use it to warm up or cool down before I went to do some real exercise.

I saw ppl use the SAME machine for yrs. But if that's what they want then good for them. I dunno their goal - if they were satisfied that's great.

fuck you.

Why not just walk home?

Also, why is anyone on these things during the summer? Or at anytime in a nice climate? I love jogging.....but 95% of it is because of the forward motion and ambience of being in a forest, seeing some rabbits, hearing a creek, smelling the soil and leaves, etc.

The results are dependent upon the effort exerted. Dunno anyone can argue w/ that...
in any area of life really.

>I'd not ever run on a treadmill as my primary cardio for an
>extended period.

That's great. Doesn't mean people can't get results doing just that.

>I'd only use it to warm up or cool down
>before I went to do some real exercise.

That's also great, and I love that for you.
There are obviously other uses for the machine tho.

regarding the latter, something is better than nothing - but its better to have the amount of effort actually give good results

example: crunches with bad form are a bit of a waste, and you could hurt hurt yourself

You have to eat to grow.

You don't have to be Rocky 4 out there for it to be considered exercise.
A comfortable walking pace on the treadmill is definitely good exercise

In response to Reply # 88

I did crossfit for 2 or 3 months, i've done various other intense hour-long workout classes fairly consistently for a couple years, I played highschool sports back in the day

Nothing melted the fat right off me as blazing fast as yoga does. When I string together a good 2 or 3 weeks in a row (like 3 1-hour sessions per week), the change is drastic. AND I have more endurance and strength, coming back to those other activities like I'm superman.

In response to Reply # 0

especially among children. We latch-key kids of the 70s and 80s ate just as poorly as kids today, but we didn't have anywhere near today's levels of childhood obesity.

I exercise a lot, and I'm not losing any weight, but I'm sure I'd balloon up if I stopped.

it was a sin to go inside unless your parents called you in.

I had friends who knew going in to get a drink would mean they were in for the day.

so we drank from strangers water hoses or asked neighbors for a glass of water.

30/40 years ago.

Companies started to use cheap sweeteners to keep cost low and addiction high. Also instead of using massive amounts of salt companies used more preservatives that were artificial and more toxic. Artificial dyes are toxic but thats not causing obesity genius.

I lost like 20 lbs. when I was studying abroad in Ghana as an undergrad (I wasn't feeling the food - I'd love it if I were there now, though).

I got back to my school the following semester and decided I'd capitalize on my weigh loss by working out 3x/week and eating well. Of course I kept the weight off.

The funny thing was that even after I graduated and was home, unemployed, for a few months and not going to the gym, but still eating well, the weight stayed off. I realized then that it was the eating, not so much the working out, that kept the weight off.

But even before that, I had clues. After 45 minutes going hard on a bike or treadmill, it would say I had only burned like 300 calories, or whatever. A pound is 3500 calories. That meant I'd have to kill myself with cardio every day in order to hope to lose a pound every 10 days. But I was losing like 2 or 3 pounds a week, at one point. SO I know that my eating was the major reason for my weight loss.

In response to Reply # 15

Apparently, it's not that simple.

The thing that everyone is emphasizing now (regardless of if it's correct) is that "a calorie is not just a calorie". The Weightwatchers movement in the 90's was all about counting calories but all the studies are pointing away from that now. 500 calories of soda pop is NOT equivalent to 500 calories of Kale.

So instead of counting calories....the new paradigm seems to be mostly focused on staying away from sugar. I'm even seeing 'eat as many calories as you like' as long as they are healthy, low-sugar foods.

A calorie-bomb bowl of ice cream isn't going to make you feel as full as a plate of seasoned kale with a reasonable portion of baked salmon and some wild rice.

So a calorie is a calorie but not all calories affect your appetite teh same way.

Yes....the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you ingest. While that holds true.....the amount of weight loss (and likelihood of maintaining it) will be greatly effected by the type of calorie you are ingesting.

So it seems there's two idealogies at war.

1. The disparity between calories out vs calories in is the deciding factor in weightloss

2. While calories in vs calories out must tip in favor of the latter....the deciding factor in weightloss is the nature of the calories ingested.

The paradigm has shifted from 1 (60's to the 90's) to 2 (00's to present).

b/c there's more to eating and health than calories.

one shouldn't eat a 2000 calorie diet where all of the calories come from fatty junk foods not necessarily b/c those calories are 'worse' than calories that come from kale or the like...but b/c if one only eats fatty junk foods one is likely to miss many key nutrients found in foods like kale and the like. but even a 2000 calorie diet w/nothing but kale is a terrible idea b/c kale doesn't supply all of the nutrients and other stuffs our body needs to function at its best.

eating well is common sense but ppl complicate it needlessly - usually by searching for short cuts. eating all kale doesn't make good sense any more than all junk food. clearly the better more sensical option is to eat a diet rich in a variety of foods including green leafy bullshit like kale AND some fatty junk shit like Twinkies. balance that shit out. clearly it makes better sense to eat more kale and the like than Twinkies. fucking duh! i don't need some article in some newsrag or any blog post to tell me that shit. my grandmother told me that shit. my auntie did. my father did. my teachers did. DUH. PSAs on TV did. hell, the old school Food Pyramid told me that shit. more importantly, MY BODY tells me that - b/c i feel like hell after i eat junk food but i feel energized after i eat healthy foods. DUH.

fuck you.

The old paradigm was solely focused on the amount of calories, as you said yourself..... 'whatever the nature of those calories'.

So the argument is that the new nutrition paradigm is getting less 'absurd'....because we longer see things as 'a calorie is a calorie' anymore.

new - old...it's been the same all along.

wanna lose weight? burn more calories than you eat.

wanna feel good and have a healthy body? eat a wide range of foods that will provide the nutrients your body needs to operate at top condition.

this is not difficult and it's never been difficult - unless one is looking for a short cut.

to get across. But the kind of calories you each is more important than the amount of calories (though still important.

1. The human body doesn't really care about our vanity, so trying to lose weight or gain muscle isn't as important other physiological needs. If your nutrition is off then your body goes "naw son, I'm dying. Prioritize energy storage cause I don't know the next time we gonna see a vegetable." That will have your losses compromised even if you are reducing your calories.

2. The kind of food you eat is essential. Most of these dietary processed foods are even worse and make you fatter cause your body doesn't even know what to do with it except to store it. Doesn't even see it as food. That shit gets shoved in your "fat" drawer like all the AM New Yorks people bring home from their commute.

All in all you can eat good food and make more of a bang than just eating less food. It's like a cycle (c)

Yes - it can be unhealthy to solely focus on aesthetics and fluctuate weight/water fast/juice and do extreme things to the body.

But exercise naturally sculpts the body - and there's nothing wrong w/ celebrating that.

Nor is there anything wrong with bodily aesthetics as a human art-form. You may not like a *particular* type of aesthetics, and that's fine. As you noted, there's a wide-range of "fit" body-types and aesthetics to match.

So what's the fussy-fuss?

Sheeiiit yall tell me what's going on in here?

I don't have a problem with people who want to look nice they are about to start a series about botched plastic surgeries for people who only wanted to look nice, God/Jehovah/Allah/Buddha/flyingsoaghettimonster bless em

When it becomes conflated with health and then fitness the problem is it exacerbates the multi fold issues people in this country already has regarding weight and health and fitness and class and race.

So yes so what when you said weight loss and fit bodies there is a really common flation much like what happened above and frankly throughout this post. It's not just here though it's really ridiculous what people put on each other.

Here is another example of fit vs aesthetic
And note this is just a regular size woman example God forbid if she was actually a higher weight than she is

I have to remind myself that this whole debate carries so much baggage for other people.....especially women. The gym doesn't even represent weightloss to me. I have to gain weight to get healthier. So the aesthetics/fitness duality doesn't affect me the same way. It genuinely saddens me that this is such a source of pain for so many women. I think it's rooted in a very deep social construct that defines women by their bodies. A women's body determines so much about her life. Class, employment, social status, marraige, etc. Men's bodies are not nearly as prominent in determining their life parameters.

The major psychological change that I think could be used to encourage lifestyle changes......eat for mood, not for taste. And by 'taste', I'm also talking about immediate emotional satisfaction. I heard someone give a rant about this when I was 16 and have never really forgotten it. As I grow older...I've gotten more and more stringent about it. 'Everything in moderation' is bullshit. There is literally NO reason to EVER eat a twinkie or drink soda pop. I have an addict's personality so perhaps it's just a necessity for me....but I have to go all the way.

I don't enjoy the taste of my kale + dandelion smoothies.....but I frigging love the way I feel 20 minutes after I drink them. I didn't 'like' the taste of vodka either....but I LOVED getting drunk. So i try to see it the same way. Force it down and wait for the reward. I've heard that some people advocate making a 'food diary'. So you write down how you feel 30 minutes after each meal/snack. It's almost like I see eating as an investment for how I will feel shortly afterwards. So the focus is on well-being and mood rather than weightloss or aesthetics.

Can't speak for that guy but most folks here in Japan eat less carbs and sugar than the average American to maintain a healthy weight. Most folks here cook everyday, eat veggies, fish and small portions of beef and pork. Food portions here are at least half the size of the average U.S. meal.

Whats amazing is bread shoppes are very commmon here as are ramen noodle shoppes. Tons of sweets, cakes, etc at department stores. Folks here don't over consume nor do they eat those sugary carbs everyday.

Stretching is popular here as is walking (mostly elderly folks) in the early morning hours. Green is said to burn fat as well and is quite popular here as well. Tons of people here us the train system which means walking to the station from home.

I had to admit to myself that I ate a fair amount of junk food. I also had to educate myself on what I was doing wrong. Carbs and sugar was the main culprit. I do not like sweets. However the carbs put a roadblock on my weightloss. I would go to the gym 4 times a week and have miniaml weight loss. Cutting out the processed carbs, bread, pasta, all of that is helping. I just need to get back to the gym alot again :-D

Also the soda and juice, stay away from it. Just drink water and wine.

Pretty sure that they are. Pretty sure they also know about nutrition and have obesity.

Edit. I had to google but they have the second highest rate of obesity in Europe.

Western. That was "2nd World".

But, from what I understand, Croatia specifically is on the come-up, and is supposed to be really beautiful (they filmed alot of the Dorn scenes in GoT this season there.)

So cheap and so plentiful that we get fat off of calorie dense food (junk food, fast food, snacks, etc.)

Places where food is harder to come by don't have that "luxury".

Look at world statistics. Obesity is just as prevalent in poor countries. The US is the only western nation in the top 10.

There's something funky about that study. I'm getting alot of contradictory results but I'd go with this one:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/04/22/youll-never-guess-the-worlds-fattest-country-and-no-its-not-the-u-s/

The point is.....it has nothing to do with luxury or wealth. I'd assume that it's moreso a case of us having the luxury to WORRY about nutrition/obesity. And also having the luxury of being able to do something about it. ie studies, diet experiments, weightwatcher groups, etc

but carbs are only bad for you when you aren't active. That is sadly not understood by most people, even the ones that work out.

Whenever I overhear trainers or people in the gym spew these diet myths that carbs are horrible for you I just wonder how the hell did they get that job.

And heart health. A lot of ppl die because they break a hip or wind up with dementia.

But when it comes to avoiding OBESITY (only ONE SMALL indicator of health) no it's not important. Also people should note they didn't say anything about maintaining a healthy weight, just not being extremely overweight. You may still need to exercise to maintain a normal weight, but you just need to not stuff your face with junk to avoid being extremely overweight (OBESE).

For the best health you still need to exercise or be active.

Case in point this guy in my gym. 3 years ago when I first started going to this gym, he was like 5'10 300lbs. He's there damn near every day. Fast forward to now, he's 5'10" 300lbs. I'm like wtf. But I know his problem is his diet. There's a pizza place right next door and on numerous occasions he's left the gym and gone straight in there and come out with 1-2 pizzas. smh

caloric deficit doesn't always result in weight loss...

there are tons of factors...

i hate to try and over-complicate things but it's not as simple as people are making it

how long you have a deficit...sleep patterns...how often your body is in "starvaton" mode

caloric deficit is a key...but sometimes your body will find an odd balance of trying to retain fat while in starvation mode or some people note fat % stable while noting muscle loss

gotta know your body basically...eat less than you use but within reason...the right calories are important and the type of exercise is also important

Not exactly related to the OP- but I have a question for the fitness fanatics in here.

I basically follow a paleo diet and work out hard 4 days a week, but I've hit a plateau. I'm about 5 lbs away from being in my ideal shape, but at this point it doesn't seem to matter if I only eat plants and protein, I can't seem to break through.

I'm wondering if I'm doing it wrong- and I might actually need to sub in more carbs, which might give me the energy to work out just a bit harder, which could be the final piece. It just seems counter-intuitive to eat more carbs to reduce body fat.

Does that work for certain people? Maybe J Stew would know.

In response to Reply # 111

Carbs are not the devil. They give me the energy to go harder.

If you are trying to lower your body fat and have been at a stand still for more than a month, lower your daily caloric intake appropriately.

If you are going for a certain aesthetic look, sometimes it comes down to having a muscle base to support the look. If you don't have the muscle it doesn't matter how lean you get. If this is the case, eat in an appropriate surplus and build, cut later.

I'm already muscular enough, so I'm not looking to add any more mass. I'm just trying to get chiseled, but no matter what I eat- or if I go into a calorie deficit every day- I can't seem to get there.

I've always assumed there are certain people who can never have that body composition (for metabolic reasons) or in order to have it, basically need to work out 7 days a week with a professional coach and eat nothing but lean protein and steamed veggies, which is extreme.

There are no special snowflakes.

Barring a health issue, everyone loses the same.

If diet is the only way you are creating a deficit and its not enough (though it should be) add cardio to make up for a tracking error in your calories.

You will need carbs for that. Carbs aren't bad, sugar is not bad.

Ppl have body composition and weight set points. Most women will never get to single digit body fat percentages no matter what they do, not in a healthy state at least. I think most men have one too.

I IF only so I don't late night snack. I have the same calories just in a shorter time frame.

The only way its helping me to get leaner is by making me too full to want the girl scout cookies in my freezer. Is there some other benefit? B/c if he over consumes cals while in his fed state he will gain weight.

Its still CICO no matter how you cut it.

your body will eventually go into starvation mode: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starvation_response

intermittent fasting gives you the calorie deficit without going into starvation mode. this is a simple explanation. of course it is more complex than that.
