trying to think of a GREAT R&B song. I mean I really like "otherside of the game," "green eyes" and "I want you" from erykah, and I think "You got it bad" by usher is good, but are these songs great?
I kinda feel like alot of people of our generation think doing music that presents itself as great makes the person seem pretentious, arrogant or sanctimonious like Bono or Kanye or something. people shy away from it. Look at Beyonce. Her best reviewed album in years is full of songs trying to be cool and left-of-center, and other than "Pretty Hurts" and "XO" are all trying their best not to be great R&B love songs.
Then there are the people who still want to make a great love song, like Alicia keys, John Legend or, I dunno, Kem, who clearly don't have the elements to make a Great love song, only a very good one. Even your suggestion, "We Belong Together," while being a very good song, and an out of nowhere comeback single, is not classic the way Donny's "A song for you" is classic.
So that leaves me here, feeling like some weird crumudgeon trying to tell people the last great love song was released in 1987. ------- http://adevotedappraisal.tumblr.com - Essays, reviews, short stories and free writes on music, film and life around us.
