Scaldis Noel - a little sweet but awesome
St. Bernardus Christmas - possibly my favorite beer
Boulevard Sixth Glass quad, excellent... light color for a quad but taste is all there
Firestone Walker Easy Jack - good double IPA
Troeg's Cultivator (helles) - not bad
Conshohocken BC La Colombe Tandem - coffee ale; unlike most coffee beers this ain't a stout, but a delightful amber with Belgian yeast. Probably not av ailable outside the Phila. area? I dunno. But surprisingly excellent.
Spencer American Trappist - delicious. Overpriced for what it is, but delicious.
Starr Hill Dark Starr Stout - good, I'm just not a big stout guy
Bell Oarsman's Ale - fine everyday beer

two or three others in there I forgot

Mind you, that's mostly me just supporting locally since I know the owner, but it's pretty tasty.

I also finally tried their Subsequently Don Barleywine and it was really delicious, but one bottle sufficed. I couldn't see drinking more than one.

I'm working the Beer Fest at the Philly Zoo this year, co-DJing with a buddy of mine. Cannot wait.

I feel that way about some of the barleywines. Stouts too, some of the more bitter IPAs.

Awesome; I'd heard about that but we're Elmwood people at this point.

We did go to a beer tasting fundraiser for the Hatboro Y (my wife works with the organizer) and they had some good stuff - one of the principals from Crooked Eye was running taps, an they're not even bottling yet.

They're moving from North Wales to Lansdale to a bigger location so I haven't seen him around as much as I'm sure that's heavy on the mind, but I'll keep it in my head next time I see him.

Oh man. I was addicted to that about two falls ago. They serve it in there tap room and you can get it with a rim of cinnamon sugar (which I totally balked at until they told me to try it) and it is fantastic. The Funk Zone, which is the Red Zone aged a year, is really stellar too.

>Awesome; I'd heard about that but we're Elmwood people at this

God I love Elmwood. It's pretty amazing to have a zoo like that in such a relatively small community.

EDIT: I actually almost DJ'd a singles event for them, but I was booked on the date they held it.

since the great Grocery Store Beer Revolution of a few years ago, anyhow. Our Wegman's always has a supply of the 8 and 12, and stocks up on the Christmas in late November - and sells a ton of it. If you like the 12, you'll love the Christmas.

>I'm obsessed with doubles these days.

I'm largely off the IPA bandwagon, but a lot of the doubles - especially the sweeter ones - still work for me well.

>I really have been brainwashed into becoming that guy who
>won't drink a stout unless it's under 50 degrees outside.

I stopped caring about when I drink what beers a while back... maybe when my shop started putting out-of-season seasonals on deep discount and I would buy them.

unfortunately I'm just not as much of a stout guy in general.

My beef was that it was $110/case. Our local grocery had 4 packs for $19.99 too, so it wasn't just my distributor.

On the other hand I can get the delicious Affligem Blonde for $50/case, or the delicious Leffe Blonde for $42; Spencer, while delicious, is not twice as good as either of those. BUT I will say I think the Spencer is bottle-conditioned, so there is the distinct possibility it will improve significantly with aging, though the ABV at 6.5% is a little low for that.

The guy at the beer store agreed with me, feeling that it would be a better buy overall at about $70 - the Trappist name is worth a lot, but not as much as they seem to be betting on.

I lucked into a case of Tsjeeses and another of Tsjeeses Reserva. The regular was very tasty, but a little flat; the Reserva was really unbelievably good.

Delirium Noel is a winner too as you'd expect.

De Ranke's Pere Noel wasn't exactly my cup of tea - hoppy Belgian pale - but certainly far from bad.

I also tend to enjoy a lot of the winter warmer & domestic holiday ales - that slightly sweet, slightly spiced caramel malt amber vibe is right up my alley.

The list of brews on their websiite is pretty impressive from an idea standpoint. Your choice sounds good though... tripels have been the rage in my house for a while now.

Coul be interesting. The fact that it's illegal to ship beer through the mail or UPS could put a kink in that. (For the record, I've done it successfully.)

They carry it in Whole Foods and Specialty stores. It's really being done out of love, the owner only has an assistant brewer and an apprentice, there tag line of Beer, Love , Hope is true. They don't have any desires to expand and become a super large name, they just want to make beer and have a simple tasting room.

The brewers from The Brewery love this stuff. It's like your favorite rappers favorite Rapper

I've done exchanges over Reddit. You can do it you just have to be smart about it like you said.

has only been in the bottle two weeks at this point, but you know, you gotta sample to see how it develops...

It's a nice dark amber, definitely full-on saison character with a lot of the spicebush's citrusy aroma and taste without being at all sour. I also reused oak cubes from the garden berry beer (which also came out awesome), so there's just a hint of berry tartness under it along with some slight oak character. Heavily carbonated, which I love.

Not bad, the macro wits (Shock Top and Blue Moon) are both preferable for me to the regular brews from their parent organizations.

I'd be interested to hear if you explore the style further - there are a lot of great domestic versions of the style, not to mention the increasingly easily available Hoegaarden.

Locally, I've been enjoying home faves like whatever DC Brau is brewing, 3 Stars is also great. Bardo Brewing is awesome. But a new guy on the block, Jailbreak Brewing, has this Double IPA that is AMAZING. They also make a Jalapeno IPA (think flavor not heat) that's a good deal. The Amber was also kick ass.

Although gimmick beers, especially dark ones, don't move me much when it's 70 and sunny out, I'm still drinking DuClaw's Sweet Baby Jesus...it's a Peanut Butter & Chocolate Porter.

I got Ommegang's Game Of Thrones beer for the season and it's a Dark Saison. Very smoky, drinks good. Had it with some roasted chicken.

Every year, I get the seasonal samplers and Sam Adams Summer Pack is already out and it's just the middle of April. I was able to snag a couple of Spring packs...Cold Snap is a drinkable crisp brew that I'd probably take into summer with me.

My friend opened up a Beer Nerd's paradise in DC. So locals, please support: http://www.pipetowntraders.com/

Ashton, the owner, is a beer nerd as is his employee. If you're one of those people who like RARE finds in beer, cider and wine, go here. Now. And tell Ashton that D.L. Chandler sent you.

So many small regionals in the game now, it can't last forever but we have to enjoy it while it does!

We tried that on our last visit to TJ's... I was surprised at how good it was. I'd been reading about the increasing use of peanut butter a year or so ago, but hadn't gotten around to trying one. My wife really liked it.

>I got Ommegang's Game Of Thrones beer for the season and it's

Sounds good; IU've used a saison yeast in darker beers before but have never had a commercially produced one, and Ommegang never lets me down.

Good fun wayys to sample a good variety from brewer's. If you get Magic Hat's summer one, beware the HiCu. One of hte worst commercial beers I've ever had.

Sounds good! If I' been this into it when I was in my early 20s, I wonder if I'd have made some different career choices.

thats my beer of choice at the moment.
always a case of Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale in there year round, thats my go to.
everytime my brother & I get together we always crack open 5 different beers or so to test out.
the best ones from our last go round were the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter & the High Water Brewing Campfire Stout.
both of those were pretty damn delicious.
the Campfire Stout was like drinking a s'mores.
they just opened up the new Ballast Point headquarters in Miramar too, they have a Research & Development section with new beers theyre testing everyday so im definitely gonna be checking that out soon.

it was delicious. when the weather gets warmer I like a schofferhofer grapefruit wheat beer. weak in alcohol but tasty and refreshing.

KBS is the bar none the greatest beer I have ever tasted. I've managed to get my hands on three in the past month.

Weyerbacher Quad 2010 & 2013 - Excellent. Similar for sure, but the 2010 was noticeably smoother with a caramelly vibe and creamier mouthfeel.

Weyerbacher Blasphemy 2012 - accoring to the hose, this is the barrel aged version of the Quad. also awesome, I dunno if superior but definitely very different (and no worse for sure).

Dogfish Head 120" IPA, 2009 & 2011. Those of us who like the 120 felt the 2009 was superior - it was crystal clear and a much darker color. The 2011 was cloudy, clearly not as settled - it didn't exactly taste green, and it was awesome, but not as good as the 2009. 120" alwayys has a distinct liqueur vibe to it, which was way emphasized in the 2009.

Harpoon Leviathan - coming right after the Weyerbacher quad, quite a jump shift for something in the same style. Much darker, but without being overly roasty or anything like that. Very good, a level up from most of the Harpoon beers I've had (all of which I enjoy).

Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout - I'm not much of a stout guy still, but the Imperials aren't something I have much of a problem with. This was smooth, roasty but not overly so, noticeable chocolate flavor, and 11+%. Yeah.

We then broke out one of my more interesting homebrews... I did a wheat beer sometime around 2009 or 10, which soured on me. I gave this guy a case of it because he was interested in distilling it. He's had it the whole time so we broke it out to test; it was... interesting. Still a bit sour, but different. Not unpalatably so. not as bad as back in the day. Very interesting. For the right buyer I could sell the case for $80, but there aren't many of those buyers! We took the case back and will likely continue to drink it very slowly.

one of the other guests brought a 2 year old homebrew Grand Cru. It was good, not overly carbonated, very dark and roasty.

Fortunately we were drinking from very small glasses. unfortunately my wife drank a lot of very small glasses. She had an awful Sunday.

Haven't really been big on stouts lately but this was really good

http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30356/116604/

Also last night I had a pretty good flight:

Stillwater Projector

Third Rail Field 2
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/36133/132455/

Finback Starchild

Other Half All Green Everything
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/33510/119182/

Transmitter S8
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/33902/152131/

Also picked up a few for the road. They now have a Habanero Sculpin which was as good as it sounds but doesn't hit you over the head. The Apex Predator by Off Color Brewing was really good too.

I think the bar I had the flight at just happens to load up on local breweries.

Third Rail - NYC
Transmitter - Queens
Other Half - Brooklyn
Finback - Queens / Brooklyn (Ridgewood)

Off Color is from Chicago though

20. "Any Nebraska crafts you've gotten into?"
In response to Reply # 0

Just got hired at a new bar opening newt month where we're featuring 55-60 beers on tap, all of them Nebraska or Iowa brewed while cycling in about 10% national favorites in our region like Goose Island and Deschuttes.

But I've never dug much into the Nebraska craft scene other than Lucky Bucket which bores me to tears and Scriptown beers, which are excellent and in the same building my apartment is, but they just started operations and probably won't be national for a while (honestly, I'm not sure we have any national…)

The brands I can think of off the top of my head are:

NBC (Nebraska Brewing Company)
Storz
Spiilker
Lucky Bucket
Empyrean
Zipline
Farnam House
Upstream
Brickway (formerly Borgata until the casino sued)

any experience with Nebraska beers? Like to figure out some stuff I can recommend before we open or I get a chance to try them out.

but it's so dark and rich, it's not very summery at all.

I just had a sip of this yeungling Summer Wheat I picked up.
It's okay, nothing to write home about, even though I'm a
pretty big yeungling stan and thinks it should be america's
beer over stupid budwiser. If someone wanted a cheap domestic summer beer, I'd tell em that shock top mentioned above, over this Summer
Wheat. Fat Tire crushes both tho.

at what, $18/case for Lager cans? That's awesome. And the beers are generally vastly superior to most macro brews. But their beers are never going to compare favorably to all-grain beers.. .in fact I think if they want to maintain the market share they've muscled into over the past decade they're going to have to break their price point and come up with some higher quality all-grain brews; at least this one uses a real ale yeast instead of their standar lager. I'll give it a shot and will likely enjoy it; reviews on BA seem to be surprisingly favorable overall.

>but it's so dark and rich, it's not very summery at all.

meh.. dark an rich is fine anytime!

I've enjoyed their beers I've had. Got a few cases of the Rotator IPA a few years ago... one (Shaddock) was mmmuuuuccccchhhh better than the other (Spiced) but both were decent.
