"Can we talk about star power for a sec?"

I came to the realization that Pusha-T is a dope emcee who's spend his entire career working with the greatest producers of his generation, and he's arguably as famous as Trinidad James. What doesn't he have?

like if u turn on the radio you are guaranteed to hear xyz song on the radio no less than 15 times a day...

he lacks that... he's talented and a solid MC
just not a superstar.....

he will forever be the Pau Gasol of rap... u want him on ur team but he is not ur star attraction

Not many catchy or sing-songy hooks (like Kanye) that people can latch onto. He doesn't really do party songs (like Jay Z). His stuff isn't really danceable.

He's still one of the best out there, IMO. I just don't think he appeals to listeners outside of his niche.

"Work Out" "Can't Get Enough" "Crooked Smile"

Full disclosure...I've only heard his stuff that's been played on the radio. I can't speak to the rest of his albums. But he's definitely made songs with an eye on the hot hip-hop & R&B stations.

to people in 2015.

People LIKE J. Cole and the only people who don't like him are the "too cool for everything" old heads who tend to not like anything.

people hate that he sings on his hooks but this is what women love to do...

women wanna sing the hook.

this is also why Kendrick works.

Dude mastered the simple hook on Section 80.

First time I went to see Kendrick in Charlotte and J Cole came out I was able to get twice as close to the stage because the women RUSHED that shit like LL came out..

and they all sang "got me up all night.. all I'm singing is love songs."

my wife was MAD cause she didn't know the song and felt left out. but she doesn't listen to the radio like that either.

Cole's singles get played on the radio.

as dope as the neptunes are/were with clipse...

it was zero crossover interest...

not enough catchy hooks basically

in order for that to work...u need mad marketing push (they dropped before social media was huge), drama, or a relevant narrative

what happened to that boy was probably the catchiest hook they had...and that was it...u need something like that every season to really stay relevant and garner that kind of attention

i think he's fine w/being hood-famous and doesn't want that next level stardom. if he wanted it he'd be out there doing the things it takes to be that kind of star. it doesn't just fall on ppl for the most part - they go get it.

as you pointed out - he's got the pedigree or the CV to have stardom. he's worked w/many of the right ppl. but he hasn't worked w/those ppl to create the kind of records that would make him a star outside the hood.

and he hasn't played the game to get that kind of fame - pressed the flesh at the right times, showed up at the right events, given the right kind of interviews and all of that. he hasn't done it. maybe he doesn't want it. maybe that's not him.

fuck you.

he's not Jay-Z or Biggie - both became stars and built it on the idea that they're former drug dealers turned rappers. both had more star quality than Pusha T. and they both made catchy records that grabbed the world's attention.

Pusha ain't that act, it seems.

fuck you.

The time between the 2nd Clipse album and the 3rd was 4+ years... During the most tumultuous time in the music business. 02-06

They went from being a gold (in one month) selling act to Hipster Darlings (Hipsters dont buy records). Grindin & When was the last time.. What Happened To That Boy were both Top 40 records and they were on Justin Timberlake's first solo single. I think there was a time to solidify pop accessibility with another album in the 03-04 space but the label B.S. and whatever else was going on made it difficult to happen.

But I guess I understand how the swag draws a lot of people in.

I like Jay Z as an artist but he's never come off as very personable to me.
