"my mama ought to be locked up somewhere"

according to today's society.

i can't begin to tell you how many times i sat in the car as a kid while she went somewhere and did whatever she needed to do

i've sat outside of liquor stores

the mall while she went in to pay a bill and possibly shop

and who knows where else

AND i picked my own switches.

what are some things your parents did that they couldn't do today without going to jail?

I used to chill in bars all over Pittsburgh from the age of 4 to 12. My dad was a drinker but he also painted all the signs for various bars so he had credit everywhere.

my mom and dad grew weed in the back yard and dried it in the cellar.

my aunt and uncle gave us beer at 14

My fam used to throw parties like in Menace to Society.. sans the guns and gang violence of course.

There is pictorial evidence of me chilling at the bar during happy hour(s).

he wouldn't take us both

With my brother he would be dramatic whisper to the bartender as a warning "look my partnah is here with me..he's a bit small cause he's a midget but look don't stare cause it upsets him" then my brother would struggle to get up onto the bar stool

A man trying to feed his kids for cheap and were like fuckit.

Who am I to deny these kids a meal?

If this guy is this desperate maybe he can't afford food.

I doubt it would have worked if he was trying to order the kids alcohol or if he even had them there so he could get drunk.

Looked just like this: http://imagehost.vendio.com/preview/da/danschmitt/V497.jpg

And she used to let us sit on top off the retracted roof when she drove. So not only no seatbelts but a bunch of kids under 10 (I was probably around 5/6) riding on top of a car essentially.

Because he took me to the club so often, I got comfortable enough to walk in by myself and order drinks at the bar.

I know for sure I've been allowed to drink since I was 3. I've never been drunk.

I sat at the bar, shot pool with the regulars, eat at the bar... everything but drink there.

moms would regularly leave us in the car to go "pick up a few things" at the grocery store.

I used to buy my old dude's Kools and his Mickeys or Wild Irish Rose from the store down the block from him.

I've never owned a helmet or knee/elbow pads of any type.

We used to ride in the front seat of moms VW Bug or the 78 Corolla at 4-5 years old with no seatbelt on.

It was definitely a different time.

could stay up all night on weekends since i can remember, from 'bout 9yrs, when i started living with my mother....but before, while living with my grandparents: i was my grandmother's chaperone, especially when we went to Mid-Atlantic(for the old heads)Wrestling matches; she would be drunk as hell, but alert as a mufaca, and i be by her side to protect from anyone!lol). she would take me to the bars as well, and the liquor houses, when she could sneak away for a few hours....damn, looking back, man..i miss you grandma!

I was left home alone
I was 5 the first time
and too scary to get out of bed
in my own house

left in cars, while she shopped
don't cut up or touch nothing in the store
cuz back to the car it was

was taught to clean chitterlings
around age 7, and they had to be done right
hell this should be illegal

also, not a parent
but my 5th grade teacher
pricked our fingers, with a needle (sewing)
so we could look at our blood under a microscope
this was in the 80's during the AIDS hayday
she had us wash our hands first

...now aint that somethin'

staying home for for 2 or so days while my mom went out of town for business when I was in the 5th/6th grade.

i remember riding in the back of pick up trucks on the highway. I even recall riding on the pulldown arm rest in the front seat of my grandmothers 1977 Ford LTD

i rode the bus alone starting at age 10.

it was nothing for my grandmother to allow me and my 1st cousins (all under the age of 5) to ride in the back of her station wagon.

my great-grandfather and uncles in Alabama and Mississippi would let me and my cousins ride in the back of their pick-up trucks all the time.

my uncle who raised me would let me ride on the back of his motorcycle starting at age 5 until he sold it when i was about 7. i wore a helmet, at least.

that uncle used to get me up for school and cook breakfast - until i was in 5th grade when he 'let me' make my own breakfasts.

fuck you.

He only drinks one can of beer a year, on Super Bowl.

He had it, and the can looked fuckin cool rad and awesome...AND I had seen commercials that made beer look like it was the best tasting liquid on earth. So I kept bugging him the entire first quarter.

After a while, he said "you want a sip? Ok, here..." I sipped it, and immediately spit it out. It was disgusting!!!!

My first taste was schlitz malt liquor. I was around the age of maybe 8 or 9. My uncle used to always come over and sit around talking with the fam on the weekend drinking.

That can, the blue bull on there. What's not cool about that? The taste! That's what wasn't cool.

He let me have a sip one day, was the most disgusting shit ever. Couldn't see why grown ups would want to drink it.

Years later, can't get enough.
