Walked there from GT dorms with computersnacks and a cpl of other fellow GT freshmen

Got separated pre cell phone days and walked home by myself thru Techwood Homes. Was later told that was poor judgment lol.

Anyhoo...Roots played accompaniment for every act on the bill. Erykah was a surprise. SV killed. RE killed. When the whole crew came on to do Hip Hop at the end the whole damn floor was oscillating up and down. it was bananas.

The Block Party was a show for all-time (despite the rain) but I got one complaint.

We left home that morning from Bed-Stuy, went into the City, got in line for the buses, got on the buses and slowly made our way back to.... Bed Stuy!

I was pissed because we got there late and Kanye was finishing up his set when we walked in.

Afterwords, I walked the 8 minutes back home.

And we had GREAT seats. To the point where Prince locked eyes with me then mimicked my dance moves on stage. Shit was pretty epic. Also my first time seeing Prince live. Kinda spoiled me.

But can we talk about the shitshow that was getting out of that parking lot after the show? That was the worst executed parking arrangement I've ever experienced.

Maxwell, Fall of 1996 - UHS had dropped & "Til the Cops Come Knockin'" was the 1st single. It was OK but it didn't really move me that much. My boy was big into Maxwell and played the next single, Ascension" for me. Much better. I was diggin' it. So my boy talks me & my brother to roll to Columbus to see Maxwell perform. Tickets were like $10 or something. Maxwell performed the complete album and tore it down. I've been a big fan ever since.

Prince, 1999 (?) - I've always liked Prince but I was never the biggest fan. But this cat was on stage for something like 3 hours with hit after hit after hit. The entire night, I kept saying to myself, "Damn, I forgot about this one."

Sade, late summer 2001 - The "Lover's Rock" tour. These cats, as a band, are just unreal. And Sade is no spring chicken but she put on an energetic, charismatic show. They all sounded phenomenal.

I'm a little annoyed that I don't have a hip-hop show up there. Kanye's "Glow in the Dark" show is nippin' on their heels though.

now known as First Mariner Arena or something. Place is ancient. I graduated from college there in 1996.

I would have enjoyed it more at Verizon Center, but I already had tix for Bmore months before she announced a DC show.

Naughty by Nature @ UMass Amherst spring 2003 - they absolutely rocked this outdoor show, just one of the best experiences ever and they killed it, playing all their classics

Common and Talib Kweli @ Amherst College, MA spring 2004 - a small, impromptu show where they literally asked the crowd to shout out songs they wanted to hear, then played them. They were both just on stage where they'd either just play hype man to the other guy or play their featured songs together. It was awesome.

Spitkicker Tour @ Palladium, Worceter MA, 2000 - Common, Reflection Eternal, De La Soul, Biz Markie...this one probably tops the list just because of the line-up and the acts being in the prime or twilight or their careers at the time. Just an awesome, awesome experience. I was only 16 at the time too so I was really taken aback by the whole thing.

Rock the Bells, Randall's Island NY, 2007 - Rage Against the Machine was the headliner. Blackstar was there, the entire WuTang collective, Murs, Cypress Hill, etc etc etc. Just a hell of a lineup and a hell of an event.

Saw De La Soul in Boston last year, and PRHyme earlier this year also in Boston...those shows were both really great too but the above 4 are all-timers.

D'Angelo is killing it on his current tour.

I was lucky enough to catch the Apollo show earlier this year.

The buzz and anticipation for that gig was off the charts.

And D not just met but destroyed expectations that night.

That show is definitely on my shortlist of greatest ever.

2004 - Club Black - http://worldofbootleg.blogspot.com/search/label/aftershows

Midnight show - Incredible set with an all star band and celebrities everywhere in the crowd and in VIP (Outkast, Dave Chappelle, etc.). I was in front of Maxwell and most of the cast of SNL. Prince was happy as hell and in the mood to jam. I was so tired and my legs and feet were killing me but it was well worth it.

Block Party - I have no words for how incredible that day was. From beginning to end it was great. After the concert, went to a fight party and watched Hopkins destroy De La Hoya. Great day.

That show was wall to wall with famous folks.

We were near Lenny Kravitz and Chris Rock.

Main Stage: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry (joined by Lars and James from Metallica, who were in town from playing ATL the night before), Ice Cube, Soundgarden, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush.

Side Stage: Porno for Pyros, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. and Stone Temple Pilots and others

I seen some great, great shows, but this was the greatest lineup ever of hot bands at their best.

(Tie) LoveSexy Tour and the 2008 Hotel Gansavoort secret show--I went nuts when dude came out in that white thunder bird onstage. Sheila E on drums. Prince being PRIME Prince....It was all worth the hype....But it's the small gigs that pop with that magic. Hearing Prince do a cover of EWF's "Can't Hide Love" is the type of shit dreams are made of...lol....A marathon show. GREAT gigs.....

2. MJ & The Jackson's Triumph Tour---Mike was headed for world domination. It was obvious dude was about to blow up. Great seeing him and his brothers putting in work. No lipsynch Mike. The Off The Wall era performances were GREAT. And the Triumph songs POPPED....Randy was sneaky good on piano....

3. Run DMC & The Beastie Boys--Together Forever Tour--Fucking sick. JMJ commanded that crowd with little effort. Live cuts and scratches...Run and D? BOOMING voices. The Beastie's brought is as well. Live hip-hop at it's best....

4. Radiohead--Kid A tour---All I'm going to see is this was on some transformational shit...Yorke and them boys were SICK...When they got into "Paranoid Android" it became a weird ass revival....

5. Roots/Badu, New York---

It's tough to beat a Roots gig....But when Badu gets onstage with those cats, shiiiiit....

HE DID THE WHOLE FUCKING ALBUM, YO. and as one of my favorite albums of all time....to be able to just sit there and listen to track after track after track...that was magic. and...he sounded the exact same live as he did in the studio 40 years ago.

also there was this show at the Af-Am Fest in Baltimore. i can't even tell you exactly what year, but it was Erykah Badu's Mamas Gun era, and she performed and ended up jumping in the crowd, and then was lifted by all the brothers in there while she kept singing. no groping...no harassment, just pure upliftment. and it was beautiful to see.

I was at the first night without R. Kelly. The amount of people that performed that night was insane.

The highlight for me was these two grimy looking dudes that didn't move for most of the show and were just mean mugging people all night all of sudden jumped up and started dancing and singing to Mary J. Blige's WHOLE set. They were singing like they felt her pain.

It was bananas.

The Prince One Night Alone show in DC in 2002- We were going to be out of town for the show in NYC so we copped tickets to a Friday midnight show in DC and took Amtrak after work down to Washington. The show was great as it was in an intimate venue and Prince played a ton of new material from the Rainbow Children record and performed jazzy versions of some of his catalog cuts.

Also...

BDP at Brown University in spring of 1992 (I think)-KRS-One live is a force of nature. He killed this outdoor show when BDP was still near the peak of its powers. One of the best hip-hop shows I’ve ever seen.

Digable Planets at Tramps in 1995-Digable had two albums under its belt and in retrospect was soon to break up but that night was a classic. The trio performed with a live band to put on a memorable show.

And I can't forget...

Lewis Taylor at the Bowery Ballroom in 2006- Lewis' apprehension at being a performer is well documented (he's since retired from publicly making music) and he was obviously nervous that night. His performance started out a bit wobbly but he realized that he was getting nothing but love from but love from a crowd that knew and loved his music (import only at the time). Maybe my memory is overly melodramatic but I remember him being truly touched by the support from the crowd. By the middle of the set he was doing his thing and sounding amazing.

Jacksons Victory Tour, c. 1984. First real concert I remember attending. I was in preschool and basically worshipped MJ at that point in my life. You couldn't tell me I wasn't the shit that next day at show-and-tell. lol

Lauryn Hill & Outkast @ Chicago Theater, c. 1999. Glad I got to see those artists in their prime.

D'Angelo @ Arie Crown, c. 1999. That Voodoo tour blew my teenaged mind.

P-Funk @ HOB Chicago c. 2001. They started at 9p and didn't leave the stage til after 2a. Shit was mindblowing to me.

Prince @ Allstate Arena, c. 2004. Watching a legend be legendary? I'm glad I got the privilege to experience that. Also, we shared a moment when he mimicked my dance moves on stage.

Esthero @ Metro, c. 2005. She is magic. I need to experience another of her live shows again.

Rage Against The Machine & Queens of the Stone Age @ Alpine Valley, c. 2007. Few things are more powerful than screaming "FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!" at the top of your lungs with thousands of other people in the rain. Glad I finally got to see them given they cancelled the leg of the Tibetan Freedom concert I was slated to go to when they broke up.

Erykah Badu & The Roots @ Chicago Theatre, c. 2008. I was salty The Roots started on time, so I missed the first ten minutes of their set. But they killed it as always. And Badu melted my face for the second time. The first was when I saw her on her Worldwide Underground tour at the Auditorium Theatre. The last was when she did that Mama's Gun full-album show at HOB a couple years ago. That shit was dambed-near spiritual.

Foreign Exchange @ Double Door, c. 2009. Leave It All Behind is one of my favorite albums. Hearing that material live was awesome. I think that's also the same night Phonte made me eat Harold's chicken wings with him after the show. lol

Jay-Z @ Obama Staff Ball, c. 2009. I was front row in a cocktail dress rocking out to ALL his greatest hits just feet from Beyonce. I was hoarse the next day from rapping along to everything. Arcade Fire also performed, but I didn't know who they were and didn't really care for their vibe/music much. Especially when I knew they were keeping me from Jay-Z.

Mos Def and Talib Kweli + Common @ HOB Chicago, c. 2011. The Black Star Album is one of my all-time favorites. It was great to hear them together performing all the tracks. And when Common came out to do Respiration?! OMG. Pretty sure everyone collectively lost their shit at that moment.

Foo Fighters @ Lollapalooza, c. 2011. Dave Grohl being a rockstar in the pouring rain. They're one of my all-time favorite bands. Few things can top that.

Stevie Wonder @ United Center, c. 2014. SITKOL live was a magical experience. While I enjoyed his set at the last Obama inaugural ball, this show was leaps and bounds better.

Honorable mentions of artists I've seen multiple times whose live shows I really enjoyed: Janet Jackson, Tony Bennett, The Roots, John Legend, New Edition, Little Dragon, Amel Larrieux, Kanye West, Common, De La Soul, N.E.R.D., Tanya Morgan, Turquoise Jeep, Black Milk, Lianne La Havas

This fool goes and surprises us with THE TIME (w/ Morris Day) as the opening act. Maseo was on deck for this tour. Shelia E came through on percussion. Shit was bananas.

The Roots at Lincoln Center
They bodied this show. I wrote a review that may or may not be in the archives. Jay came out and did So Ghetto. He seemed larger than life that night. Oh I almost forgot Kool G Rap came out and did Road To The Riches!!!! THE WHOLE SONG!

Stevie Wonder - MSG
He did so many of my favorite songs.
Prince came on stage just to play bass on superstition and when the song was done just went back in the crowd and took his seat. SMH

Kendrick Lamar - SOBs
It was like attending church. The place was packed. Section.80 was killing. They didn't even have a video for ADHD yet. The people in that spot new every word to every song. He reached back and did some OD songs. Hell he did Michael Jordan and the place went nuts. He'll probably never do that song again.

De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising Anniversary show Best Buy Theater
One of the best shows I've ever seen. They were just so tight with everything and had the crowd in their palms the whole night.

Beautiful summer evening, I got out of work a little early, got on a train, went to the free Boston HipHop Peace & Unity Fest (alone is often a great way to enjoy stuff), previous acts were all pretty dope, Pharoahe Monch killed it

But as the sun began to set, and the city lights came on, KRS (headliner) came on stage and my entire world was changed forever.

Dude was an absolute magnetic force, it felt like he had the entire city in his control, virtually everyone passing by (old white ppl included) all stopped and remained in their place, hypnotized

By nightfall, I swear this man had doubled the size of the crowd.

He gave the city a hiphop history lesson, and sent everyone home thinking about peace, love, unity and having fun
