dress shirt is just that, a shirt to be worn with a suit/tie.

a button up is a shirt with buttons that is worn casually ie. flannel, plaid, western style, etc.

I wear a lot of pearl snaps so I have to differentiate between that and button ups.

On a side note I hate when I forget that I'm wearing a button up and start treating it like a pearl snap. I look really silly trying to rip a butting shirt off.

"button-down" can be used to highlight collar buttons

"dress shirt" wouldn't make sense for flannels, demin shirts or something like this: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/86698?feat=504190-GN2&page=lakewashed-chambray-shirt-slightly-fitted

"button up" doesn't even make sense (do you actually start at the bottom?) and sounds kinda like something my 3-year old would call it

in any case i wouldn't trip because it ends up in one of those "you know what they mean whatever they say" areas

The right answer is however you do the buttons though lol.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.
