"Question of the Day: Are you currently happy with your life?"

Real talk. When you look at where you are right now, at your current status, situation, level, etc. are you really happy?

If not, what could be better to help make you happy?

job pays well and i'm pretty much teflon. but i'm really over it. i'm just stacking for a while because it's easy money. there's the potential to pay off like $26K of student loans in one blast if i stick through another busy season.

could use a better job. living in a better place. that'd make me happy.

on an hourly basis...
especially when living in one of the most expensive regions in the United States...
Relieving that stress and pressure alone opens up the possibilities for exploring things that bring joy a LOT easier.....

I didn't worry nearly as much about money before....but when you got a child...things just change.

Good job, great girl... about to buy our first home.

I'd like to have some time/energy left over for a bit more of the dancefloor fun I had in my 20s, but I'm pretty content.

My girl's reliably on that "NEED TO WORK HARDER, NEED TO SUCCEED MORE, NEED TO ACHIEVE MORE!" and I think I've got more chilled out as a result of watching her pile the pressure on herself.

With regards to the concepts.

If you are content you aren't working hard enough or taking the easy way out. There is too much work to be done.

i got a job. two weeks ago i didn't. that's reason to be happy.

all that talk about getting money...nigga...being happy helps you get money!! When I'm happy I get up earlier, show up earlier, put in more work, think more clearly, i'm more creative, and take less breaks.

All that "happiness is for suckers" shit is why us black men can't make it to sixty, just dropping dead cuz our heart wears out from that unnecessary stress.

and glad my dad doesn't ascribe to that foolish 'gotta be miserable to be a real man' shit.
with all the shit he's been through in his 63 years of life he makes it a point to be positive
and exude happiness.

doesn't mean he doesn't ever get stressed
doesn't mean he doesn't work dumb hard (regular hours and overtime)
but it means he makes sure he makes time for himself and actively searches for and finds the joy in life every chance he gets.

I said happy is for women and children...not for men

I didn't say "be unhappy"

I come home and cook some food while my kids play monopoly or do their homework. They laugh, sing, dance, play...because they are kids. Their every need and a good amount of their wants are provided for, all they gotta do is wake up, wipe their ass clean and make good grades. Daddy handles everything else.

Listening to them argue or hash out a issue over dinner fills me with a purpose beyond the selfish "happy" shit.

Happy is all abt the self. Purpose? Satisfaction? Contentment? Thats everything outside of you. Greater than you. As a man, *that* is the goal....or should be.

Am I "happy" to still be alive, to be above dirt instead of below it? No. I'm neutral. When its my time to die, I won't have shit to do with that either. I'll just stop breathing. Is that "sad"? No. Thats life. We all die.

The homeless guy on the street is breathing. Is he happy? Of course not.

He may be content with a bottle and a grate to sleep on. But "happy"? No.

Happy denotes carefree. No worries. No problems. No stresses. You got problems? You ain't happy.

I submit your problems are what make you feel alive every day you got to vet up and slay that motherfucking dragon becausd if you dont...who will? And so...you get up and do whatever you gotta do.

If you can lay down every night, as a man, knowing you did everything you could, busted your ass in pursuit of your goals...you sleep the sleep of kings. You earned that rest. Its not happy. Its contentment. Its satisfaction.

Ain't shit sad about dying.

who am i kidding? i been knew that shit.

i think the state of being truly "happy" denotes a sort of ignorance or obliviousness w/ regards to reality.

And that happiness is conditional. So, if you change your conditions then you can be happy - if only for a short time.

Half full, half empty.

I use to be like Bin in a lot of ways but one day, I figured out that life is really narcissistic. You're given ONE (to our knowledge) to live and while impacting as many people as possible might be great, it could also be a huge hinderance.

When you leave here, you're not coming back (to our knowledge). So it's best to enjoy it to the best of your ability and impact what you choose to because ultimately, it's YOUR life.

I get joy from the things Bin described and they contribute to my happiness but my natural disposition is happy. Even when I'm fighting, angry, discouraged, worried...I'm happy because I understand it's all part of the human experience and life is to be experienced. Without those experiences, I don't build character or resolve, which I value on some level.

I appreciate struggle, embrace success, cherish accomplishment and mix it all together to make up my happiness.

It's all a matter of perception. And it could ALWAYS be worse so why should I shoulder that to bottom out? Nope. I'm happy as sh*t fam and resolve to be that.

and that BUT is followed by 1 or more aspects of my life i want to change/improve.

i guess some people can feel the need to make changes and improvements and still be happy but to me that's a BUT.

i've had periods of my life where i was just happy with no BUTs in sight so i know it's possible...

if someone is happy that they are going to college, of course they still want to graduate and be successful etc

happiness is not about, nor does it have anything to do with, your external life circumstances

it's inner peace..it's about are you content with your ability to handle your life and the struggles that come along with it? it's about do you let hardships defeat you or do you fight through them? etc

my life is like a city after being devastated by a tornado. my shit is fucked now and i'm rebuilding, which makes me satisfied if not happy, gimme a year or so and I'll be in a good position again.

Poster above is right. All my shit has do with money. If I came up on like 5k right now, I'd be pretty fucking happy.

I'm always trying work towards becoming my best self and immersing myself in activities I enjoy (dancing, music, art, fitness stuff)

I got an ideal working situation

California literally running out of water...but were happy!

If you are a mature human being and you look around the world today and you see wtf is going on and you say to that well *I* am happy!

You are delusional, insane and more then a little psychotic.

You are accepting of reality. Fine. You may be satisfied with your place in life. Fine.

But..."happy"?

How can you possibly be....?

That bitch in Detroit literally beat her kids to death and then made her surviving kids stuff their siblings in a fucking freezer! You happy, nigga?

Slap yourself.

does it really matter?

wonder what bin's doing?

you gon let the evil that men/women do defeat you? that's freedom without really being free.

rape, murder, greed. it's never goin away. ever. when the nuclear war goes down and there's 10,000 people left...there will still be rape, murder, theft, greed. we aren't perfect.

if we lived in a system of black supremacy...blacks control everything, everyone else is subjugated, if billy bob joe got shot by a black cop, would you be happy? would the fact that someone who don't look like you is suffering make you content?

I remember when someone interviewed the dali lama and asked about the Chinese fucking up Tibet, asking him why he wasn't angry. He said "they took my land and killed my people...should I let them take my mind as well?" That's how I approach things. I could killed by a cop today...but I'm supposed to let that cracker take my happiness to? Fuck. That.

Might as well be happy, shit was fucked up before you existed. People will be doing dirt somewhere at the exact moment that you drop dead. People will be fucked up a millenia after your bones turn to dust. Might as well be happy, eat good food and smoke good tree. *kanye shrug*

Sigh, you can try to possess your own happiness and use it as a means of defense to make powerful people powerless. Yes. I agree.
You will need that as a form of stability.
But what happens after you decide on settling for happiness?
You done?
Land still get inhabited?
Your people still get killed?
What is your happiness going to do to stop that??
Where does your own personal happiness come to the defense of your home, your community, your people, your nation, your continent?

I'm unhappy and some of it has to do w/ my obligation to my people(s) and oppressed peoples here.
Aside from engaging in music, life is literally pointless to me and humans ARE finnicky unstable principle-less creatures that you sometimes question fighting for, but when you own up to your capability to do something to help someone in their plight, well, the cost is it takes a lil freedom, and as a result, some of your happiness reserved for self.
I noticed some of the most giving community members are some of the most emotionless people you see, for example.

That's why I can tell the ones who are all on some TheNewBlacksPharrell-acisms aren't really involved outside of themselves.
I'm not saying folks don't have their own set of experiences.
I'm not saying folks are automatically selfish.
I am simply saying what I just stated, which is folks most likely aren't really involved outside of themselves.

And to hell with the Dalai Lama's approach; you can have that mentality within your mind so that you don't get distracted by political maneuvering, to stay centered; but the goal should still be justice, however possible.

The degrees to get the job. The job to get the house. The house to get the cars. The cars to get the girls. 7-8 years ago, it was all gravy, but now it all seems so empty and like I'm not doing anything really "important", just going through the motions.

Streets won't let me chill.

i have so much going on right now
but like my pastor said
all i need to ask is "am i in God's will?"

I believe that while i make mistakes
and mishaps
that God loves me
He is still there for me
He listens to my prayers
and He continues to make a way out of no way

and THAT gives me peace
and allows me to be happy

just bein honest.

well, maybe not swell - but marginally happier not having to count skin color as a reason for fucked up encounters.

I don't know...I feel like life will never be anything near perfect for most of us. So whenever I feel like "if I had THIS or THAT, my life would be better!" I realize that if I did acquire whatever that thing is, something else would decline. Mainly because I barely know anyone who's happy in every facet of life, even if they claim to be.

So for me, the obvious biggest thing I'm missing is a girlfriend or anything like one. Yet, I feel like if I end up getting one, then watch the DJing start to fall off. Or, watch a family member end up being sick. Or, watch a close friendship end up deteriorating. And not at ALL related to be getting the girlfriend, but just because it feels like life can never be but so good overall.

With that...yeah, I am surely happy overall, and shouldn't really complain about a single thing.

and that might mean my answer is closer to no.
however things are looking up in life so idk
i smile and laugh daily
but i also reach my boiling point too easily IMO
could be i'm dealing with depression but i don't really know
but i do make it a point to find some kind of joy
my son helps (but he also pushes me to that boiling point sometimes)
its a struggle.
i guess i could be happier
working on it.

edited to add:
with life? like where i am in life?
not satisfied
happy that things are looking up tho.

Being content with my progress is what I aim for.

Life for me is about progression and becoming a better man....happiness can be a temporary byproduct of contentment for me and neither here nor there.

In response to Reply # 0

maaaybe "content" is a synonym of "happy" but many of y'all are suggesting that people can't be happy and grinding at the same time. or happy that they're improving their lives daily, etc.

if you're grinding and miserable, you're f*cking up somewhere and need to make a change.

of course it could be a lot worse. I'm healthy and i have awesome friends and family. so i got the basics covered.

theres just a lot of big gaping holes in my life. i hate feeling lonely. i hate not having children. i hate living paycheck to paycheck--freelance paycheck to paycheck at that.

i put a lot of effort into having gratitude but at the same time, me on paper...no bueno. I'm looking forward to the day life on paper matches the general happiness i feel on the inside. thats what i call joy.

See, I left Joy out of he OP, because most folks don't understand Joy and they can't see how its the center of real living and enjoying life. Happiness is dependent on circumstances and influencing factors, but JOY!!! Joy comes from the seed and essence of the Almighty. And it can never be taken away or diminished without permission.

thats the role in their lives, and my role in theirs.

ultimately and intimately i know that i'm on my own in the world and no one really has my back. i know that i'll never be hungry or homeless, and i'm grateful for that so thats not a strike against them. its just that there are limits.

theres also the fact that I'm pretty much by myself all day everyday and that pretty much sucks.

Exercise
Meditation
limit drinking (alcohol has a bad effect on me)

I got some other shit I need to work on. Different job/duties, more fulfilling hobbies, etc.

But honestly, for the most part - it's SHOCKINGLY simple.

Yes. The only thing I want now is a potty trained (fully) child and start my career. I'm good And, I can only thank GOD for it. A year ago... I wasn't in the best place.

Bought a home with my wife at the beginning of the year. We're in the process of making it a place that we can call our own for years to come.

Yeah, bills suck. Yeah, property tax and income tax is a bitch. Yeah, we've more costs and responsibilities to deal with now than ever. But I'm happy to deal with them. And I'm happy that I've got the best partner I could imagine taking this journey with me.

I've been happy for a couple years now. Cause I've been acting on
dreams I've had since I was a little kid. Like an artist working
on his greatest masterpiece and life is the canvas. And yeah, that
feels good. Happiness to me is a choice tho. You can always find a
reason to feel unhappy and be justified. Same could be said about
happiness. Knowing better how life works and being able to use that
wisdom to my benefit is also a source of happiness.

Far from satisfied tho, so much more work to be done.

37 years old. Make $28,000 annually after taxes.
House is in foreclosure.
Drowning in debt.
House falling apart...literally.
No car.
Can't go back to school cuz I owe them $$$ (they're holding my transcripts hostage so I can't transfer).
Worst of all, I don't have money to buy food. At least once a week I go 24 hrs. without food. Thankfully, I have folks who will look out for me and share their food with me (got -$9.00 in my bank account until payday in a few days).

Once I can afford to go back to school and get my bachelor's, I'm gonna get my masters and Ph.D. as well so I'll never go hungry again (Lord willing). It actually pisses me off when people say money doesn't buy happiness. Trade places with me and you'll shut that sh!t right up lol.

of course it makes things easier but it won't make you happy. sounds like you are going through some time times, I hope things get better for you soon.
