"Cops still killin unarmed Blacks. Do we still care?"

I have fallen victim to my own apathy. There was a period where I was following these stories intently, posting every new development I could find on my timeline, arguin with ignorant people (some of which were surprisingly old friends of mine) but today I see new stories I haven't heard anything about and I just feel tired.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3027885/Cop-feared-life-stood-hood-car-fired-15-shots-windshield-gunfight-killed-unarmed-couple-trial-hears.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3027834/Coroner-Teen-killed-police-Illinois-shot-back.html

Tired of readin it, tired of hearing justifications and testimony and subsequent paeans for equality. At this point, I don't believe a big enough change is coming. I can't think of the plan that's gonna make me say "Wow. I feel valued and included in the society where I live and work and contribute to the economy."

Short of some dramatic (and I mean unrealistic) quota stipulations for law enforcement nationwide (something, I don't know, reflective of jurisdictional demographics) I think I just have to expatriate and pray for yall.

50 years after Civil Rights and this is as far as we've come? Does anybody else feel kinda hopeless about it?

the actual brutality and misconduct gets justified and vindicated time after time.

only thing that is really getting anybody caught up, is when the racist emails are found in the precinct

and once that story went national 3 or 4 times, im sure mad other PDs just deleted their emails off the server(c)hilary

and back to business as usual

the independent prosecutor angle, everyone seemed to agree 'yea that does kinda makes sense...', and then it was immediately shelved

holder did say he is working on lowering the bar for civil rights violations/convictions

as far as the protests and outrage, media gets bored, folks get numb.
fire alarm can only go off so many times b4 it becomes background noise

BUT- #blacklivesmatter is still happening, young ppl are still disrupting, agitating, etc. big vote today in ferguson.

the question then is how much is the protesting worth... and why did none of the big movements, economic buycott, etc catch on

but yea just look around. this post was creeping to page 3 yesterday
b4 the video hit the news circuits

not that anyone cared less
or ignored the 100 other murders since

but having the visuals, and blatant lying, made the boards take notice to the firealarm one more time

so people can contribute to and reference a space to move on this instead of the passive behavior on it we can easily slip into. It would have for example know-your-rights info I've previously shared from the ACLU etc to help make it so our networks can be more informed. But even all this isn't enough for a progressive hip hop space to make moves. We got the oklifestyle board at about the same time though.

The SC slaughter from this weekend - LIVE on video - will give this movement a major push:

that somehow, whites particularly police officers feel justified in killing Black folk because we have a Black president. It's like they conspire to take us out one by one and get away with it because they are still angered that the country they love is being successfully run by a brilliant Black man, it's the hardest pill to swallow so taking us out somehow makes them feel "better".

Why are we allowing this? Why haven't we snapped and just set it off? I don't know, we feel helpless? We still aren't united? We are still stunned that our president can't save us?

I wish I knew the solution.

I'm out of ideas. Nothing is gettin better. Just more advanced. New ways to track the same old thinking and pretend it's news when we find racism at every level of law enforcement in the country. Apologize, wring hands and continue as usual.

A massive overhaul is needed but is nowhere on the horizon. I don't imagine any other country is more amped to have me, but at least I can go someplace where the ratio is less than 1 gun per ignorant coward.

In the space of the last 7 months or so. Just feels like we're yellin in the dark at this point. I went to rallies and vigils here in CT, only to watch the problem move closer and closer to home. After Eric Garner, I just don't know what else there is to say.

My frustration with profiling/brutality has reached a critical point to where apathy is my natural defense. I know it's wrong. I don't know what else I'm supposed to feel.

But Ferguson is a good example of people seriously doing everything possible: organizing, rallying, enduring tear gas and harrassment for months and it still boils down to them struggling to get two new Black seats on city council. In a city with 66% Black citizens, presently, there is one Black person on the council.

So it's essentially a Boston Tea Party ultimatum we're lookin at, but sadly its historical relevance has been coopted and corrupted in recent years.

I don't know what level of activism it would take to see a real change in representation at this point, but I'm reasonably certain it would be a bigger effort than could be coordinated. A municipal workers' strike wouldn't necessarily do it these days. I could imagine if every single Black person stayed home from work for three days to make a statement. Maybe that would do it. Stayed home and didn't buy anything. But how on Earth would that get done?

Man if that dude didn't happen to be filming this would have been a completely different story.

Right up front, the shooting is portrayed as justified and the officer is pretty much absolved of wrongdoing.
Then they quickly get into the victims criminal history smh

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150406/PC16/150409558/1268/north-charleston-police-say-officer-who-fatally-shot-man-pulled-him-over-because-of-brake-light&source=RSS

A North Charleston police officer felt threatened last weekend when the driver he had stopped for a broken brake light tried to overpower him and take his Taser.

That’s why Patrolman 1st Class Michael Thomas Slager, a former Coast Guardsman, fatally shot the man, the officer’s attorney said Monday.

Slager thinks he properly followed all procedures and policies before resorting to deadly force, lawyer David Aylor said in a statement.

“This is a very tragic event for all of the families,” Aylor said. “I believe once the community hears all the facts of this shooting, they’ll have a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding this investigation.”

Monday’s developments filled in some of the blanks in what was South Carolina’s 11th police shooting of the year. Authorities publicly identified Slager, an officer with the city since December 2009, and gave his reason for the traffic stop that led to the fatal confrontation. Police documents also revealed that Slager announced within seconds why he had fired.

“Shots fired, and the subject is down,” he said into his radio, according to an incident report. “He took my Taser.”

Walter Lamer Scott, 50, of Meadowlawn Drive in West Ashley died soon after the encounter near Craig Street and Remount Road.

He has been arrested about 10 times in his lifetime, mostly for failure to appear for court hearings and to pay child support.

The only indicator of violence in his past came with his first arrest in 1987 on an assault and battery charge.

Slager, 33, served honorably in the military before joining the North Charleston Police Department more than five years ago, Aylor said.

He has never been disciplined during his time on the force, the attorney added.
A complaint

Slager was on a boarding team when he served in the Coast Guard in Port Canaveral, Fla., his personnel file showed. The 91 pages of documents were released Monday after The Post and Courier filed a S.C. Freedom of Information Act request.

He passed courses on how to use the Taser X26 when he was hired in North Charleston and performed well on shooting tests with his .45-caliber Glock 21. Supervisors indicated in performance reviews that he met expectations as an officer and kept a tidy patrol car.

Of the two complaints in his file, one dealt with a resident’s allegation of unnecessary use of force.

Slager went to the man’s Delaware Avenue home in September 2013 to investigate a burglary. When the resident opened the door for Slager, the burglary victim yelled that he wasn’t the suspect, the documents stated.

The man also insisted that he wasn’t the perpetrator, but he later told internal investigators that Slager threatened to use a Taser against him if he didn’t come outside. When the man followed the order and stepped outside, he said Slager “Tased (him) for no reason and ... slammed him and dragged him.”

But another officer there said Slager had been forced to use the device during a struggle. The investigators exonerated Slager of wrongdoing.

Slager will keep working during a State Law Enforcement Division investigation into whether Saturday’s shooting was justified, but Pryor said he would be on administrative duty.

While the police released Slager’s file, one lawmaker said the episode again points out the need for body-mounted cameras whose footage can stave off community speculation.

The city is expected to get 115 of the devices through $275,000 in state funding for that and other anti-crime initiatives.

Rep. Wendell Gilliard, D-Charleston, said it can’t come soon enough. Gilliard has authored legislation to require police agencies to outfit their officers with cameras. As an alternative, he also offered a bill calling for a study of such programs. But he expressed frustration because the measures had not advanced.

“People will say I’m using this (shooting) as a springboard,” he said. “But I’ve said these types of incidents will continue, and when they do, it’s going to be unfortunate that we are not using modern-day technology to stop the speculation and rumors.”

The authorities have not said whether anyone else saw Slager’s struggle with Scott.

No one called Charleston County’s 911 Center after the gunfire, and Slager’s communications with dispatchers will not be made public until SLED approves it, county spokeswoman Natalie Hauff said.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry said prosecutors also would have to review the recordings and be “agreeable and amenable” to their release.
‘Quickly escalated’

North Charleston community leaders have mentioned the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., in urging residents not to grow violent in light of Scott’s death. But, like Missouri police said of Brown, Slager saw Scott as a threat when the officer decided to pull the trigger.

Around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Slager noticed a Mercedes-Benz sedan with a brake light that was “out and not working,” the police spokesman said. He stopped his cruiser behind the sedan that had pulled into Advance Auto Parts at 1945 Remount Road.

“What started out as a routine traffic stop quickly escalated after the driver fled,” Slager’s attorney said.

Scott ran down Craig Road, which parallels the store’s parking lot and stretches southward toward the Singing Pines community. A passenger in his car stayed put.

Slager told other officers through his radio that he had gotten into a foot chase, according to the report. The police have not given details about the confrontation that followed behind the Mega Pawn shop at 5654 Rivers Ave.

But with other officers on the way to help, Slager announced on his radio that he had “deployed” his Taser, according to the report. But it didn’t work.

The statement from Slager’s attorney, though, did not say that Slager actually fired the device. Aylor said he could not offer further clarification until the officer talks with investigators.

“When confronted, Officer Slager reached for his Taser — as trained by the department — and then a struggle ensued,” Aylor said. “The driver tried to overpower Officer Slager in an effort to take his Taser.”
‘Felt threatened’

Seconds later, the report added, he radioed that the suspect wrested control of the device. Even with the Taser’s prongs deployed, the device can still be used as a stun gun to temporarily incapacitate someone.

Slager “felt threatened and reached for his department-issued firearm and fired his weapon,” his attorney added.

The report indicated that Slager fired multiple times, but it was not specific.

Backup officers did first aid and CPR on Scott until paramedics showed up. But Scott was pronounced dead.

Loved ones have said that Scott was a family man who recently got engaged. They insisted that he wasn’t violent.

His most serious arrests came decades ago, according to his SLED rap sheet.

County police officers arrested him in 1987 on a charge of assault and battery, and he was convicted in 1991 of possession of a bludgeon.

Ten years passed before he was arrested twice in 2001 on contempt charges. He would face several similar charges occasionally during the next decade until his last arrest in 2012.

He also had convictions from 2008 for driving under suspension and having an open alcohol container in his car.

Anthony Scott met with the police near the scene soon after his brother was shot. The report did not specify, though, whether he had been the passenger in the Mercedes.

The police took his cellphone as evidence. The next day, he promised in a public statement to find out the truth about what happened.

Dave Munday contributed to this report. Reach Andrew Knapp at 937-5414 or twitter.com/offlede.

Maybe I could recruit a few other people who see this media bilge as a serious weapon against the Black community and we can do some work exposing these stories you couldn't lay a slinky on.

Starting with this Andrew Knapp imbecile. I wanna find news outlets like his that keep running these next day hit jobs on every Black person the police decide to pull the plug on. Every Black person has a good reason to get shot but every White mass killer has a sob story for why he's an outlier from the White community. Thus, cops don't just open fire when they see Jared Loughner or James Holmes. Because when you shoot White people, there are questions to be answered.

The media is only too happy to dig up and sprinkle crack on every one of us.

Everybody needs to be made aware that perception is the fuel for implicit bias.

If anybody wants to help, it seems super daunting, but I think it matters.

My first goal is to compile as comprehensive a list as I can of unarmed police killings of all races. Then, I want to compare the coverage to examine whether the stories:

1) Described the victim's size/clothing
2) Delved into the criminal history of the victim when it doesn't pertain to the incident
3) Extolled the virtues and career of the officer(s) who killed
4) Speculated about toxicology

These seem to be the common hallmarks I notice in these little post mortem character assassinations.

If you think of anything I'm leaving out, let me know.

And Fuck child support for framing the man as a criminal in the eyes of the law who needs to be apprehended and arrested on sight.
Nobody is starving because of a dead beat dad. There's assistance for people who can't make ends meet. Between child support and minor drug possession, black men are just being steamrolled into the prison complex.

A stupid broken taillight leads to 8 shots in the back?

You've got his info and his car. Where is he gonna run to?
Why shoot a fleeing man in the back? Cause your ego has been bruised and you don't want to suffer the further humiliation of being out sprinted.

This is such a horrible story all round.
I hate everything about it.

So upsetting.

People will believe what they want to believe.
I would just rather racist killer cops get weeded out the force so that we don't have to go through the whole Dog and Pony media show in the first place.

The media tries to shape opinion AFTER the fact.
The racist cop kills and hopes to get away BEFORE the media is even involved.

Its a shame that it takes a video like this that is so incredibly undeniable for people to even believe that this is a real thing. Who knows how many people have been sent to an early grave without justice being served because there was no video footage?

I wish we could re-open old cases and try them all again this time given the benefit of the doubt to the victim and not the cop that killed him

In the last year, we've seen racist emails sent at administrative levels of law enforcement, Black mugshots used as Florida PD target practice and again, Eric Garner.

The individual cop in this case is less of a concern to me, because in this instance, he thinks he's a hunter. But who gave him a license? The court of public opinion, which falls under the control of the media. Spin, redaction and general disregard for Black American life is a bigger problem than any single police officer.

Which is why I feel as trapped as I do. Because if nobody sees me get killed unarmed, the media will assume it was my fault. And if they see me get killed unarmed on tape, the media will assume there was still a good reason and will shake my permanent record until they find out I got detention for fighting in middle school.

That's why I hate it here.

You should have seen the media writhing themselves out of the shape in order NOT to mention the likelihood that it was a drug related shooting. It was simply amazing.
Anybody could tell you that it was a hit but both the police and the media did such a beautiful tap dance around the obvious while softly appealing for anybody with information to come forward.

It's not much better, trust me.

My theory is that the profession of policing attracts psychopaths

http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyclay/2013/01/05/the-top-10-jobs-that-attract-psychopaths/

and that psychopathy is one of the main issues society has to deal with before this and many other problems are ever solved.

This article is a good overview on psycopathy if people are interested http://www.hare.org/links/saturday.html

There is no weeding out process.

They may fire an officer here and there, but this is again, an institutional disease. It has to be expunged and remade. But that would cause chaos in the interim, so it's baby and bathwater now.

Thus, I see it as a lost cause.

It's sad to think we never asked to be here, but we can't stop being reminded how unwanted we still are.

the reality should be, this is the 'force'

yeah, all cops aren't racist killers

but the fact that they aren't outed

see Dorner

should be just as alarming as the murders

it's one of the key points that gets overlooked when discussing whistle blowers like Ellsberg and Snowden

100s, probably 1000s of people are exposed to the same information

in the pentagon papers and nsa examples, only 1 person stepped forward and said...this is wrong...and did something about it

NOBODY is doing that for LEO

that DOJ report from Ferguson

could be written about every PD in this country

AND

it's not new information

resulting in nothing.

where is this mythical 'good cop'

speaking for myself

there's no way in hell I could function daily in a racist environment, referencing some of the communications that have been made public recently

and then you add murder to that equation

= there are no good cops

they wouldn't be able to live with themselves, IMO

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you can't understand it without an explanation

you can't understand it with an explanation

Uh...thats simply inaccurate.

Is being a deadbeat worth being killed over? No. Is owing child support worth being out in jail, no thats counter productive.

But, a man who produces sperm, lays up with a woman, gets her pregnant and then does not assist at least with the financial upkeep of those kids is a fucking bum. That money is desperately needed and the parent who is taking care of the kids shouldn't have to go to the "system" to get help

But I don't think its an arrestable offense. I see it as another unpaid bill. I understand that the law is already in place, I just think its a waste of resources of the legal system. There are married men who have issues with money (gambling/drinking etc) or are unemployed.

If a man does not have the fortitude to take his responsibilities as a father, there is no need to force him by arresting him. In my opinion, he is as good as DEAD.

F him.
Find a way without him.

His payment in this life is being looked down upon by his children as a bum for the rest of his life. A perception he might one day regret. I hope you understand the distinction I am baking. He is just a bum not a hardened villain that needs to be apprehended on sight.

Ps can I be arrested for not paying my student loans? I am asking for real.

Really asking if I thought the events were racially motivated.

I told her that some police officers are also members of the KKK and where I'm from they still march downtown.

She didn't believe me.

It's not that I don't care. I care too much. It hurts to know some of you reacted to this story with shrugged, apathetic responses. I don't post to items like this for my sanity.

It's the twilight zone when I watch the news. No other race of people in the country are treated the way we are. Every day it's some version of Black people got fucked over again, here's video. I could make a parody of how the news keeps showing us being executed on a loop while white audiences salivate to it. BUT THAT SHIT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING.

This man is dead because his taillight was out.

Robert Durst killed so many people he had to confess it on HBO just to silence the demons for a second. In the bathroom cryin to himself about how much he wanted to go away for the crimes. But no officer sees him as a threat.

But a Black dude with one taillight must be dealt with extreme prejudice.

There is no redeeming law enforcement in its present incarnation.

You can post about a topic hourly, or not at all. Neither is a sign of activism or apathy.

Activism involves actual action. Protesting, contacting law makers, financial support. That's real stuff.

All that social media activism IMHOP ain't worth much but at the same time get's exhausting.

however, and that's a big part of social media's value to movement work. but it's only truly as effective as the connected offline organizing. when i used police brutality to push for okactivist's return it was/is a resource forum/database idea. i don't think it's necessary to explain why collectively posting and archoring information on things like say knowing one's rights, low-income legal representation regional listings, organizing strategies, regional events postings, contact info for political reps, etc would be valuable in a supposedly progressive HIP HOP online community web forum. i'm already plugged in and put in work as a south LA schoolteacher and longtime activist (one of the founders of blacklivesmatter is also in LA and a friend i know from our circles) but many aren't and traffic through here when online because this is an arts community that at least at one time repped legit resistance culture and action. what does this community stand for anymore? you'd think it there would be a more explicit visibility, at least as it pertains to movement culture.

Vineland police arrived on the 100 block of Grape Street on Tuesday after a report of a disorderly man. They left with 32-year-old Phillip White in an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials are tight-lipped about the man who died in police custody in Vineland earlier this week, but some details have come out: Witnesses told NBC 10 they saw police punching the man and a police dog biting him.

On radio, a policeman said White tried to go for his gun. A witness told The Daily Journal the man was resisting arrest.

"Shortly thereafter, officers called for medical assistance in response to White appearing to be in respiratory distress," Cumberland County prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said in a release. "During the incident White was handcuffed and restrained. White was placed in an emergency vehicle to be transported to the hospital … At some point during transport, White became unresponsive and CPR was instituted by medical personnel. White was pronounced dead at the hospital. Events that transpired between the time of the officer's arrival and White's transport to the hospital are under investigation."

NBC 10 obtained video of the event.

The prosecutor is asking for information from anyone who saw the incident. Witnesses are asked to contact Sergeant Scott Collins (856-466-5127) or E. Ronald Cuff (609-381-4890) of the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.

I'm not sure what has to happen, but this is why I support dude who downsized his car in favor of less police interaction. This is exactly the outcome he was trying to avoid.

At any rate my vote is for Ireland or Dar Es Salaam.

And sometimes they stay worse. You think black folk can't end up like the Native Americans? Did you not see Eric Garner murdered on tape with no justice served? If that can happen why on earth would one think a video of a cop disturbing evidence would make any difference? Darren Wilson made money from murdering Mike Brown and the cop who shot that young man who was injured in a car accident is not being charged with murder either.

But yeah, clearly the logic is wrong.

We associate proper speech with being white and adapting to the enemy as being somehow subservient. If the majority of non white Americans of African descent think in this fashion then our population's reduction is inevitable.

not sure how I'm the one who is divided when my pov has been pretty consistent.

What? You think getting harassed because you choose to drive a flashy car is some kind of statement? Yeah white supremacy really learns a harsh lesson when a black person drives an exotic car, gets pulled over, hands over his license and registration, and goes on with his life.

The car reference is to Isaiah Washington saying he gave up his exotic car for a Prius and has since dealt with fewer if any unwarranted pull overs. It was referenced earlier in the convo.

>and yes, it is the responsibility of field niggas to fight
>while the house nigga serves master agenda. And a lot of
>masters agenda has to do with white jesus

Field vs house nigger = divide and conquer. Please stop this type of thinking and outlook. This is why so many are out there protesting in vain.

*face palm* White Jesus. Whenever I hear those two words in conjunction all I can think is "here's someone else with little understanding of the Bible and it's origin".

>so just go back into the house and pour some tea for your
>daddy, you'll get dragged to the front when all of the scary
>stuff is done

Nothing can "get done" without a plan and the community has no plan and no code of conduct to contribute to the building of any kind of power base.

>its ok, its always been like this

Yes it has and will stay this way because we are in a controlled environment over which we have zero control. None. Zilch. Nada. That is where the "Supremacy" part comes into play. But yeah go out and fight an enemy whos strongholds you don't even know the location of.

The land of opportunity?
Home of the free, land of the brave where liberty and justice is for all? Where all men are created equal? Do you really believe this place to be not only what it says it is, but also the final destination for a people descended from those who never desired to be here in the first place?

America is a much the final destination for people of African Descent as Egypt and Europe are/were for Jews. If you believe otherwise please do tell what leads you to believe in something that is clearly not true i.e. what America says it is vs what it really is.

>your pessimism and nihilism is the last thing this earth

As if any of us are in a position to determine what the world needs. As if what it needs more of is marching for second class justice and calls for peaceful protests after a wrong has been done.

>if you don't want to build, fight, create, have dignity and
>solidarity just go ahead and pack it in

Build, fight, and create WHAT!? People throw these verbs out and seldom mention what if anything is the intended outcome.

but the defendant police officer will have a lawyer and if the defendant wants a trial his lawyer will mount a defense on his behalf. the defendant is entitled to such a defense as every other defendant is so entitled.

however, the police department has already investigated the matter and the local prosecutor has sought a murder charge. so it looks like 'they' won't be explaining this one away.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 57

There seems to be a big gap between what we think is proper police protocol, what they're taught and what they get away with.

All of these incidents just leave me with the feeling that the police can justify just about any use of force if they can substantiate any fear for their life or others.

The video doesn't show the actual "struggle" or "altercation"... we just see something drop to the floor and the man taking off before being shot.

I'd think the officer's defense is going to focus on what wasn't seen on the video. He's still got a decent amount of leeway to build a narrative that he was scared for his safety or the safety of others because the only other witness is dead.

I think the only reason the department isn't protecting him is because South Carolina doesn't have police unions. They're the powers behind the scenes in a lot of these incidents that pressure even conscientious department leaders to fall back behind the "thin blue line".

I remember hearing that some southern states don't have police unions. I also remember that other cop that shot at someone at a gas station when they went to get their license was fired quickly as well.

I put that together but there actually is a police union down there. I do wonder what the difference is, though, because they don't seem to rally behind their officers like many other departments.

They always do...The difference now is u have a police chief actually meeting with the victim's family and apologizing. Usually police chief's don't do that because it (in the police union's mind) signals guilt for said police officer...

Again, this is not about the actual shooting/murder. It's the attempt at cover up and blatant lying on the report...

We all have felt like this due to the institutional practices and the commonality of it. But we need to keep talking about it because it could be any of us.

The thing that really hurt for me is the fact that even in death, folks names/spirits are violated:
He looks like a grown man; he was bigger than me.
He had a gun!
He was resisted arrest!
He had a criminal record!

Our realities in these divided states have change little.

We must document it! We must share it!

Overall, I see where you are coming from. The issue should have been about human rights #Our Shinning prince!!!

Generally, white cops want to be respected by Blackmen. They want us to show them respect at all times; to make them few they have "power."

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/04/08/exclusive-michael-slager-s-attorney-dumped-him-as-soon-as-he-saw-video.html

First off, why is he giving an interview. Secondly, why is he saying ish like this:

I can't specifically state what is the reason why or what isn't the reason why I'm no longer his lawyer. All I can say is that the same day of the discovery of the video that was disclosed publicly, I withdrew as counsel immediately. Whatever factors people want to take from that and conclusions they want to make, they have the right to do that. But I can't confirm from an attorney-client standpoint what the reason is.

That really seems like walking the line of violating attorney client privilege.

Even this seems like an iffy statement for him to make

"At no point, not specific to this case, just generally speaking, is anybody above the law. "

clients lie to us all the time. It's expected. If I withdrew every time I found out a client had lied to me about an important fact I'd withdraw in most of my cases. Clients lie and we have to work with and around that reality. Also, we represent guilty ppl all the time. It's the job. So I cannot understand why this attorney thinks he can withdraw from this matter without violating some ethical rule. Or maybe he doesn't give a shit.

fuck you.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/ethics/sc/code/SC_CODE.HTM

Maybe the lawyer thinks the client insisted on a course of action that the attorney found repugnant. And if the lawyer gave the client ample notice and gave the client a chance to find a new attorney and took steps to be sure his withdrawal wouldn't hurt the client's case then the withdrawal may not be a violation. But that interview still feels really wrong. I can't see myself going there. And I wouldn't be surprised if the attorney is sanctioned by the state bar.

fuck you.

and even if you 'fear for your life', dude is running away, exactly how the fuck does this translate to shooting someone in the back?

how do you go from taser to gun?
,
it took 4 minutes for these fuckers to check his pulse? not even any attempt at cpr?

and how come the other cops got there so fast but an ambulance did not?

what the fuck does scotts arrest record have to do with the price of a murder in sc?
child support and at 1987 (1987!) conviction?

I am so upset.

there's something really wrong with thsi country.

and i totally get your concerns about blacklives. started strong in baltimore,
i went for a meeting, there was supposed to be a small group of us working on some proposals..
i feel like something fell off cause i havent heard much after an initial email that was sent
i definitely feel as though i havent done anything when i should've been.

i cant believe what i just saw.

....but unfortunately, it probably wouldn't have.

When Scott is running away, you see the taser lines trailing from his body, which means Slager had a grip on it and fired it.

Then Slager dropped the taser by Scott's body. That implies, or was meant to imply that Scott had successfully taken Slager's taser, had possession of it and dropped it when he was fleeing and shot.

On top of all the shell casings being about 20 feet away, all the wounds in his back being entry wounds, and the taser most likely not having Scott's fingerprints on it even though it is near his body as if he dropped it, all that would have been glossed over if not for the video.

That is the scary, depressing, frustrating and sobering horror of the thing in addition to the loss of life.

Headlight on my girl's car is out. I've had to work every night this week so far. She works every day. We haven't had a chance to get the headlight fixed.

As a result, my drive to work at night made me paranoid that I could get pulled over for the blown fuse and subsequently murdered.

Paranoid is the wrong word, because it suggests unreasonable fear.

I was vigilant and wary. Because I just watched a guy die for the same infraction.

Which contradicts the cop stating he tried getting in a fight with him.

142. "Should the prosecuter go forward with the murder charge?"
In response to Reply # 0

I think there would be a decent chance for a jury to acquit him on a murder charge. They would have to prove it was premeditated (plus he's a cop and it is South Carolina).

The dash cam and witness suggest some kind of scuffle happened, leading the door open for a heat of the moment type defense.

Would it be better to have a higher chance of conviction on a lesser charge (manslaughter) versus giving him a reasonable chance to walk scot free?

I'm sure it's different by state

but, I think the answer to your question is the difference between justifiable homicide and 2nd degree murder

the video makes it really hard to argue that Mr Scott was a threat to the officer or anybody else

= 2nd degree murder

I will try to find the link but I watched a news article this morning where they talked about multiple cases against him for police brutality against black citizens that he had been charged with before but exonerated because there was no physical evidence except other black eyewitnesses ( which apparently don't count against the police).... :/

The hell?

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/dashcam-video-shows-arizona-cop-car-ramming-armed-suspect/

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Police in Arizona released video from a dashboard camera showing how a police officer used his cruiser to put an end to a crime spree in February, CBS affiliate KOLD-TV in Tucson reported.

In the video, recorded Feb. 19, an apparent gunshot is heard as suspect Mario Valencia is seen walking down a street in Marana, a town northwest of Tucson.

Then, in a decision that Marana police Chief Terry Rozema says probably saved Valencia's life, Officer Michael Rapiejko drives his cruiser onto the sidewalk and rams Valencia.

According to Marana police, Valencia was fleeing from a Walmart where he had allegedly stolen a rifle. He had already been intercepted by police near a post office, where he pointed the rifle at his head multiple times and threatened suicide before firing the gun in another direction and fleeing.

Police do not know if he was shooting at officers, and no one was hit by the bullet.

The pursuit came to an end outside a self storage facility nearby, where Rapiejko hit the suspect with his cruiser.

"This was a dangerous felon who'd been on a crime spree throughout the morning," Marana Police Sgt. Chris Warren told KOLD-TV in February. "He'd just stolen a weapon, loaded it, was not obeying commands from officers and was walking toward occupied businesses. It's a busy time of morning, a lot of employees at work, a lot getting ready to come out for breaks, he's walking toward those businesses. So we had to take immediate action and make sure he didn't get inside those businesses."

Valencia was taken to University of Arizona Medical Center in serious condition. He stayed there two days before being booked into jail.

Police were investigating whether Valencia was connected to the three earlier incidents in Tucson, including a convenience store robbery, a break-in and fire at a church and a home invasion and car theft.

Officer Rapiejko previously served with the Tucson and New York police departments before joining the Marana police.
