"Indian man faked being Black to get into med school (swipe)"

got in and still dropped out. Now he is writing a book shitting on affirmative action.

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2015/04/03/brother-of-famous-actress-makes-huge-admission-about-his-medical-school-application-affirmative-action/

In a blog post, Chokal-Ingam explains how he ended up getting into the St. Louis University School of Medicine despite his low GPA and MCAT score:

So, I shaved my head, trimmed my long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black man. My change in appearance was so startling that my own fraternity brother didn’t recognize me at first. I even joined the Organization of Black Students and started using my embarrassing middle name that I had hidden from all of my friends since I was a 9 years old.

Vijay the Indian-American frat boy become Jojo the African American Affirmative Action applicant to medical school.

Chokal-Ingam ended up dropping out of medical school.

He has since become an activist against affirmative action. He is also apparently in the process of writing a book, titled, “Almost Black – The True Story Of An Indian American Who Got Into Medical School Pretending To Be An African American.”

When my wife was in grad school, the Chilean masters student graduated and the lab lost all of it's "minorities in science" funding, even though all but one of two people working there were brown or yellow.

and they don't say you have to give X number of spots to people from group A. It says that they hiring pool has to match the applicant pool. If 20% of your applicants are women, 20% of your hires should probably be women too.

Affirmative Action unfairly rewards well to do Black People. A black kid from a professional household who went to good schools and gets a 3.0 probably is less deserving of a slot at a great school through affirmative action.

So yeah he identified a flaw in the affirmative action system when a black face on his upper class good school application and got into schools that he otherwise would not have gotten into if he submitted as an Indian.

However, that is such a small group of people it's almost a non-factor.

The folks who really should be benefiting from affirmative action are the kids from less well to do backgrounds who persevered and excelled under less than ideal conditions to reach the same academic success.

The black kid from a broken household who went to a shitty school who manages to get the same SAT score as the rich indian/white AND BLACK kid of a doctor definitely deserves to get into a good school over the privileged kid.

BASED on the article, the Indian guy is claiming that he benefited from Affirmative Action due to the fact that he was portrayed as a Black Man. The Indian then claimed that he believes that Affirmative Action is discrimination.

My POINT deal with people complaining about the Indian guy getting benefits for claiming to be Black and getting into MED School. "SO!" What's the big deal? Black people and Latina people have been doing the same thing that the Indian guy did for years by passing as White. Plus Black have benefited greatly from Affirmative Action and should have no issue with the Indian dude benefitting from the same practice.

WTFreak is so hard to understand. The Black people complaining need to sit down and the Indian dude needs to shut up.

I get your point now. I think it's not a great point though because people generally frown on people "passing" so it is more than consistent that people would frown on what this dude did.

People generally have an issue with folks deceiving people about their race for personal gain so citing "passing" as an example doesn't help the position.

The fact remains and there have been no BLACK people complaining about other Black that passed for white as a means to get ahead and open doors for others. Black people just love to complain and like to keep up with a double standard.

Yeah, that's only when it doesn't benefit them. I know of plenty of Latino and Hispanic people that associated with being White and not "Brown" or vice versa in order to benefit from Federal schools Loans. And I could care less.

That's why I tend to use the "generally" alot. But even generally speaking, In my experience black people aren't a fan of people passing. Their is a whole genre of books about it (the term tragic mullatos ring a bell?)

Anyway, you can call me a hater for trying to coax a point out of you but the fact that you are a Nupe means I want you to be DO Better when trying to make a point.

The fact that I can call you Phi means that I give you the benefit of the doubt even though you are acting brand new by demanding absolutes on one hand, but you have no problem speaking in generalities when it benefits you. Naw, Nupe, you need to be consistent. But, going forward, if you need me to break things down to the very last compound then let me know. I'm more than accommodating to help you understand the simple points.

In order for this to happen, The University of Chicago would have had to send official transcripts with his fake name. His official MCAT scores would also have to bear that same fake name.

But, let's say for a second this is true. We know, for a fact, that he was admitted into one of the more competitive MBA programs in the country as himself, with that same shitty GPA. I wonder how many more qualified black candidates didn't get in there.

I was under the impression he changed his appearance, his nickname and the organizations that he listed membership to (I hope he actually joined the Black Student Union).

Even self-identifying as black isn't necessarily a fraud considering racial categories are somewhat bullshit (skintone wise, he blacker than a bunch of black folks).

Cause when she was accused of being one because someone tbought a gun joke was hinting her political views they tried to call her a republican in articles and Twitter and she denied being one and that she and her staff thought it was hilarious. I'm sure if the info is out there in her memoir she wouldn't all of a sudden deny it as the info is supposedly there. Anything u can quote from the memoir? I'm kind of interested in reading it now

because he damn sure did use his govt name on his transcripts and tests. they knew he was indian. he fooled no one by shaving his head and "trimming his eyelashes." he did fool them by becoming a member of a black student organization.

medical schools--probably more than most schools--need a diverse student body. having black medical students helps ensure that the profession can provide culturally competent care. furthermore, black med students are more likely to provide care in black communities that tend to be underserved.

i work for a medical school and ive heard quite a few nonblack students moan and groan about affirmative action. (its an easy way to push my nigga buttons.) the hope of going to med school sends these kids into a level of desperation that breeds this type of thinking.

anyway, there are plenty of routes to medical school and 3.1 and mcat 31 isnt a lost cause to the point where you have to be fraudulent to get in.

anyway fuck that dude.

Trini or something.

Black people come in all sorts of appearances and names.

I was talking to to a dude in a professional setting recently who looked like this dude and had a name kinda like this dude and he basically had to start dropping codes to me to let me know he was a down brother. He mentioned his Jamaican lineage and mentioned his black american wife and black children in the convo.

its not hard to tell an indian person from a black person. skin color is just ONE factor in how a person looks. even if you are going by skin color, the undertones btwn black ppl and indian people are way different.

i can understand there being some confusion about ethnic origin if he was trini or guyanese, etc. but even then...these are things that you discuss in your personal essays if thats the case.

Generally you can, but not always. Physicalities can be just so varied and then we haven't even touched on people mixing. I get in arguments often as to whether you can tell someone is bi-racial or dominican just by looking at someone and the answer has to be you can't 100% of the time.

Well that's the point though, dude gamed the system by twerking his appearance and I am sure he crafted essays to mislead people into thinking he is black.

All to say, you can't say folks were certain he was Indian.

um, the distinction btwn african americans and dominicans is nowhere near the distinction btwn african americans and indians. I'm sure you know plenty of dominicans have as much african in them as african americans.

i can understand confusing a dominican and an indian tho.

what does this have to do with my point???

there isn't a racial diff btwn an indian from trinidad and an indian from india. so how would anyone be able to tell? lolol

theres a BIG difference btwn an indian from india and a black person from the US.

ppl mixed with black and indian usually looked like what they are...mixed. (starting to hate that word, lol)

If he checked the black box. And if some administrator was wild enough to ask him how does he consider himself black (which I think no administrator in their right mind would do) and he said he is of mixed ancestry, don't you think that'd be the end of the story and the furthest extent the questioning would go?

but i think the administrator would know it was fishy. probably wouldn't believe them.

anyway its more than about "looking" black, and checking that on the box. a lot of applications will ask your parents occupation and what country they are from. there are also personal essays and secondary essays in which a person goes more into their background.

my point is that i think the admins knew he was indian and not african american nor west indian/south american indian.

Considering the 50 shades of black Black People look like and all the mixed up heritages that we have within the African Diaspora, White Administrators would be fools and treading in dangerous territory to start second guessing dark skin people who self-identify as black.

Maybe some people saw it as a scam and their were plenty of schools who rejected him, but folks saying no school would fall for the scam (like maybe the one that admitted him)?

Not a good assumption.

First, he was not as bad of a candidate as he puts on.
His MCAT score was actually pretty high (84th percentile today, I dont know what it was then). That's why he was solicited to apply to many top schools.
And his GPA, while mediocre came from UChicago Econ, one of the toughest programs around. That actually makes he unique from all the life science majors.

Second, why does he not emphasize that even as a black man he was rejected to every school he applied to except 1?
And the one he got into, his MCAT score was above average.

Third, his story relies of the fact that he had contact with minority affairs type departments in his process and was invited to talk to or stay with black students.
That isn't at all shocking or inappropiate. That's more the school trying to sell the candidate that it is a welcoming place for him.

Finally, there is no control. Who is to say that he would not have had equal or better success applying truthfully?

it detracts from the relevance of affirmative action
which in my opinion is still very necessary and deserves a more nuanced review

it also make it appear as though the only AA beneficiaries are less deserving students
which is complete bullshit
but even if that were so, we should also discuss legacy as AA that does the same thing but no one seems to complain

at this point i cant help but wish this asshole bad things.
thats one medschool spot that should have gone to someone who might have wanted it badly enough to complete.

In response to Reply # 0

He didn't get rejected as an Indian-American. He applied as black from the jump...

... and, since there is absolutely nothing about having gotten accepted to any of the prestigious schools he claims he "became a top candidate for" (read: "didn't get in"), he still got rejected from most if not all except for the school he ended up attending.

Furthermore, he says that he suspected many of the schools knew he was Indian and just didn't bring it up, and that Case Western called him out quickly on it. It probably wasn't hard, since you still, you know, have to put your mom and dad's names on your application, and their names are pretty obviously Indian.

Of course, none of this is covered in the news stories. It just says, "POSED AS BLACK! GOT INTO COLLEGE! WHAT YOU READ NEXT WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT etc"

I guess it's not as exciting if the headline is "Indian Kid Applied As Black Student, Many Didn't Buy It, Got Rejected From Nearly Every School Anyway."

So to everyone arguing in here that "IT CAN BE DONE THO"... even if you were right in theory, it doesn't apply here, since there is absolutely zero proof that the kid got in "because he was black."
