"GOP Abstinance Crusaders 17 year old daughter is pregnant (link)"

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/07/10/republican-abstinence-only-crusaders-17-year-old-daughter-is-pregnant/

Gotta teach kids more than abstinance... smh.

States that prescribe abstinence-only sex education programs in public schools have significantly higher teenage pregnancy and birth rates than states with more comprehensive sex education programs, researchers from the University of Georgia have determined.

The researchers looked at teen pregnancy and birth data from 48 U.S. states to evaluate the effectiveness of those states’ approaches to sex education, as prescribed by local laws and policies.

“Our analysis adds to the overwhelming evidence indicating that abstinence-only education does not reduce teen pregnancy rates,” said Kathrin Stanger-Hall, assistant professor of plant biology and biological sciences in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

your 17 yr old child's actions outside of your supervision. All you can do is hope that what you try to instill is practiced by the child.

That man's daughter's actions has no bearing on the honesty of his cause.

People may not like the fact but it's true. Now the onus falls on the one that chooses to engage in sexual activity.

>if she was practicing bc + safe sex, its unlikely she'd be
>pregnant.

Again, that is not a guarantee and who's to say that she wanted to use some kind of protection. The choice is still hers and hers alone..

insisting on teaching only abstinence and not anything else is dumb, not based on logic, and is demonstrably worse at preventing teen pregnancy than the alternative.

teaching abstinence is not the best, or good birth control.

absolutely no one here is arguing against practicing it if you want to.

People are acting like it is the Father's fault that his daughter chose to not practice good judgement in response to self-control. It's not.

Simple question. She's sure as hell more likely to get pregnant going raw. That's inarguable.

Further, the notion that abstinence is the best prevention is 100% true. The notion that ONLY teaching abstinence is the best way to prevent teenage pregnancy is 100% false, delusional, and just plain negligent.

But as a parent you can teach them how to live, what they do is up to them. With that said, the man's character and mission should not be made light of or mocked.

That's just like you wouldn't mock a Federal Jude just because his son was convicted of stealing a car. Both matters involve choice and self-control.

>But as a parent you can teach them how to live, what they do

Absolutely, and there's nothing wrong with that. They should also be realistic that in this "hyper sexual culture" there's still a very good chance that dispite all they've tried to instill, kids are going to leave the bubble, and maybe/possibly/probably still have sex. And if and when they do, there are several other realistic ways to avoid pregnancy and disease.

With that said, the man's character and mission
>should not be made light of or mocked.

I'll mock it all i want. It's unrealistic, and ultimately counter-productive. Plus I find people who think the 1950s are coming back pretty funny

>That's just like you wouldn't mock a Federal Jude just because

yes. absolutely.

With that said, the man's character and mission

his character? maybe not - i dunno enough about him to say.

his mission? as related to abstinence-only education - there's too much data out there that shows abstinence-only education results in increased rates of teen pregnancy for me to agree that abstinence-only education is effective at reducing the amount of sex among teens or reducing the rate of teen pregnancy. if his mission is to prevent teen sex or reduce the amount of teen pregnancy i think he may want to consider some alternative to abstinence-only education. like maybe sex education encourages abstinence but also informs teens about birth control and safer sex, generally.

fuck you.

It seems cut and dry to treat it the way we treat violence.

Kids see violence in all their cartoons and the world at large. It's inevitable. As a result, parents are ready to tell a child not to hit or more appropriate times and instances to hit. It makes sense, because violence is a natural part of all existence, human or other.

Why are people treating copulation any differently? All the same factors apply. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away.

Talk to your kids about it or get comfortable feeding your grandkids.

Da bayball, babeh. (c) Charlie Kelly.

here's the link: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2008/11/03/red-sex-blue-sex

It was written in response to the differing reactions to the pregnancy of Bristol Palin.

"Social liberals in the country’s “blue states” tend to support sex education and are not particularly troubled by the idea that many teen-agers have sex before marriage, but would regard a teen-age daughter’s pregnancy as devastating news. And the social conservatives in “red states” generally advocate abstinence-only education and denounce sex before marriage, but are relatively unruffled if a teen-ager becomes pregnant, as long as she doesn’t choose to have an abortion."

It's a long form essay and absolutely worth the read.
