Let's assume, for the sake of discussion, race isn't an issue. That doesn't mean racism isn't an issue, but for whatever reason, it doesn't affect you.

I'm being a dick, of course, but I do doubt whether I would've been a very productive/world-changing person in 1815.

Serious, obsessive people changed the world back then... Newton, Brunel, Jefferson, Nightingale, Fry, Jenner... all us well-meaning clowns got their shot when the serious people had got rid of most of the diseases and banned all the good drugs.

I'd still be the village idiot and/or a hanger on of artiste types in some godforsaken hovel in London.

b/c the plumbing and food sanitation issues they had back in 1815 are just too much for me. imagine me using an outhouse? no ma'am.

so if i could change anything i'd change that. i'd introduce them to indoor plumbing and proper food handling.

and OMG they didn't have deodorant then either. which is why dudes and ladies carried handkerchiefs w/good smelling stuff in them - to cover the stench of life. and horse drawn carriages w/horses shitting all over the place. the roads weren't paved yet...everything must've just been FILTHY compared to how we live now.

i would not ever.

fuck you.

I used to read horror novels when I was a teenager, but I pretty much get all the same grotesquery from history books these days.

Streets piled high with horse shit, people fine one day and dead mounds of puss the next with no raised eyebrows, workhouses, debtors prisons, outdoor toilets for the lucky, shitting out of windows for everyone else. The past is just excrement, disease, famine and violence.

Fuck the past. I want to see the future where they think of us like this.

Only my post would be I wake up tomorrow morning as a Slave in Virginia in 1700, on some Sankofa (the film) shit.

I'd first obviously conceal that I could read and write. Figure out a way to get to the north. Then, on some Back II The Future 2, get rich with early industrialization, somehow. Then try to become part of the underground railroad, or something.

1. i'd catch a severe beating b/c i'm not used to cow-towing to white ppl. not that i'd be all Nat Turner w/the shit but more like Emmitt Till - i'd do some thing that's perfectly normal where i'm from but is a high offense back then. like i'd forget to get off the sidewalk when a white man walks by me. or i would say the wrong thing at the wrong time. i don't know the ins and outs of social behavior as a slave in 1700 and the stakes were high. i'd fuck that up off the bat. i'd catch a few beatings for it. if not worse.

2. i am not fit for the intense physical labor many slave men had to deal with. i don't know how to __. i'd catch a beating for that, i'm sure. more than one, mostly likely.

3. disease.

4. most likely the fact that i have lived as a free man and the hopelessness of being freed (1700) would cause me to commit suicide. that was the realest moment in 12 Yrs a Slave for me - the slave who asked for death. that'd be me.

fuck you.

in middle school. I went through a phase where I wanted everyone in Philly to think I was from Virginia, and I had alot of people fooled for about 2 years. But I get your point. I think if I spoke with a 21st century, northern accent, I could pass it off like I'd been sold from the Caribbean, or some place "different".

b/c Django lived much of my slave revenge fantasy. just kill 'em all.

so if i could go back to 1815 and not experience any of the detriments of daily life of a black man back then or any of the other miseries of regular life in 1815, i'd want to be able to kill all of the slaveowners and others who facilitated slavery. or at least kill all i came across. all of them.

I would only observe and take in the sights of art and culture. Immerse myself in the arts, go see Beethoven, shit like that.

Humanity as a whole is maturing/growing as a collective. One event would do nothing to change global perspective.

I know shit about physics they don't know, but I don't know the math to prove it. I know shit about medicine they don't know. Can't prove that either.

Don't know enough French or Latin to be considered learned. I guess I could get out ahead of the gold rush...if I could survive the trip.

I generally believe individuals can't change human history. History is so complex and is the result of so many factors coming together I generally think individuals don't matter that much in the grand scheme of things. Even individuals like Jesus, MLK etc. are partially the byproduct of those forces coming together and if they were never born history would have probably produced some other individual to serve in that role but That's a whole nuther discussion though.

However, I think that the most important impact that individuals had in US history relate to the drafting of the constitution. Other than the bible it seems like there are no other examples in history where quirks in drafting had such consequential impact on how we live our lives.

For examples I am almost certain that if the founding fathers were aware that personal weapons would become ubiquitous and readily available to anyone and would create a huge crime problem they absolutely would not have drafted the 2nd amendment the way that they did.

I also think that they would have been more clear that corporations do not have the full benefit of the bill of rights.

I also think they had seriously thought about the influence money had on politics they would have drafted the bill of rights slightly different.

create a "philosopher's kingdom". That was the intention. They had all the right ideals in mind. It was supposed to a country where freedom and education reigned to create free thinking and enabled individuals, free from the rule of the church, etc. The problem is that they assumed people would play along with the rules, but people quickly found ways of exploiting the ideals for personal gain.

The tools for peace, cooperation, equality were created thousands of years ago, they are just not being used. The problem is people.

Reminding yourself that many of the founding fathers were slave owners, would you want to adjust and rethink your statement that the founding fathers wanted to create "a country where freedom and education reigned...."?

I would use my knowledge from the future to invent a bunch of things and make a small forture. I know materials are scarce during this time but it could be done. I would then use that money to create a company in my name. I'm assuming we are going to be sent back to the future. I'm going to open up a checking account at a bank and let that bitch gain interest for 200+ years. MO MONEY!

Seriously. Not even trying to be difficult or funny, but for me to have my mindset from 2015, and to be placed in post "War of 1812" America, as an Afrikan (american), I can't conceive of me not being lynched, in the North or South. Many would like to think that they would tell Massa "suck my motha f'in dick", but that thinking comes as the result of decades of struggle, marches, rallies, speeches, etc. For me to "change the world" my first actions would have to be to change the thinking of the times, and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have gone over so well in that time period.

That shit made people crazy and violent for several decades. I guess that would only take me back 100 years.
200 years... I can't think of anything that doesn't have to do with fixing slavery.... So I tap out.

In response to Reply # 0

I'm black which means I'm killed or sold into slavery AT BEST 200 years ago.

If I jumped through time I'd set myself up as head of illuminati with a strong family wrecking shit.

Highlights of my time jump:

Warn the forefathers of all the suffering and strife their decisions cause by taking out the 2nd amendment, explicitly writing against Jim Crow, slavery, and segregation somewhere in the constitution.
Rescue Kennedy and watch history turn around the right way.
Rescue MLK Jr and Malcolm X and give us some legit black leaders.
Set myself up to be rich by gifting myself money and prestige five minutes after my mom passes. Someone walks into the room five minutes later and all but gives me free reign as a 12 year old. This might fuck the timeline but oh well we're using The Flash rules anyway. Then again the previous decisions prior to this one inevitably push the timeline to a better place.
