I guess from the way they're funding it that it won't be much of a viable option for most other institutions, but they could, should and are which is brilliant. Hopefully some other high earning universities will follow suit.
I'm a socialist on this stuff though really... universal free education paid for by my taxes please.

my daughter and I didn't know the bottom line totals until she got her award letter the weekend of Labor Day...the first semester of her Freshman year had already started mid August.

It doesn't factor in cost of living, beyond stat income tax rate. A family of 3 earning 45k in Boston has the same Expected Family Contribution as a family of 3 in earning 45k in Bentonville, AR.

I visited there in 1999 and as a lower middle-class family my parents were both really concerned about the cost. We had met with some advisers and they broke it down that there would be essentially no tuition cost based on our situation (although obviously lodging and stuff in Palo Alto wasn't cheap, there would be federal loans for that).
I would have gone there but I didn't get in, so I had to pick between Cal, NYU and UCSB (went to UCSB).
