"Questions about non owners insurance and rental car collision insurance." Wed Apr-01-15 05:16 PM by normal35762
I don't own a car right now so no insurance to transfer over to a rental.
The little bit of looking around I did online I was able to find cheap damage waiver for the car but nobody seemed to be offering rental car collision. Do companies sell that at all? For the duration of the rental?
I might be renting a car soon and wanted to be g'd up just in case anything happens. Is my only option for collision to get the rental car places options and non owners insurance.
Any of you all have or had non owners insurance? how did that work out? I got it years ago to avoid paying more on a ticket I got in Knoxville (that's when I discovered that credit cards only cover the rental car itself), but a few months later I got a car so I didn't use it really.
Last December I rented a car I got the damage waiver and collision and that turned a 60 dollar rental into a 170 rental. Lookin for ways to keep that down.

We sell it all the time in commercial though, where it's called hired auto liability. (Non-owned auto liability is a related coverage, but not the same.)
If such a thing exists as a monoline coverage, it's probably also called hired auto liability coverage; non-owned would apply to a situation where you were using a friend's car or a company-owned car or something like that. (Even if there is other insurance for a vehicle you're driving, you can still be sued and held liable in the event of an at-fault accident.)
I'll try to look into it a little.
You'll want to check in the meantime with both your credit car company and your homeowners' or renters' insurance company to see if they have any advice. Make sure you specify that you're interested in hired auto *liability* since a lot of people don't understand that auto insurance involves both liability(damage you cause to other people or their stuff) and physical damage (to the car that you're using/insuring.)
Looks like it is available, but not necessarily widely available (as in, most companies do not offer it.) And it looks like it's called non-owner car insurance. Interesting.
There seems to be some conflicting information about what companies offer it - one site says only Progressive and GEICO, another says Sate Farm and Nationwide.... and a lot of the posts are from several years ago, so their information might not even be true.
Insurance.com has a post from December of last year though which suggests you can call them and they'll provide the quote.
Good luck getting it figured out, but I'd say unless this is a fairly long-term rental, you're likely better off getting it from the rental agencym, even at their exorbitant pricing.
