"Colposcopies "

Yall ever had that? Said it's a pretty standard procedure, but that shit was awful. I thought I was going to vomit right there on the table, nigga didnt even say what was going on while it was happening. Still in shock and low key traumatized. How did you feel after the procedure because this dosent seem normal.

sorta lowers your expectation of how awful it will be. It's standard procedure to the doc, so that's how they treat it, little or no explanation let alone, specifics about after care. But it's really painful and invasive to treat the shit so flippantly.

I work and educate women on HPV and abnormal paps and colpos every day. While a colpo might hurt, it's really a quick procedure that ensures you do not have cancer or the beginning stages of cancers (although, quiet as kept, if you have cancer full out, paps will show that).

I feel so bad for women who have had multiple colpos (I had one at 20, and that was the only one...all normal paps since then). I don't recall it hurting a lot...

I read up on everything after the fact lol. But I got the Guardisil(spelling?) shot when I was like 18, plus I never have unprotected sex so the lesions likely were not caused by HPV right?

In response to Reply # 25

but not everyone who has lesions has them because of HPV and I don't know about your doctor, but the doctor I work for does HPV testing after an abnormal pap (meaning if the results come back abnormal, the lab should run the HPV test). You can always call and ask if they did it and if so, the results.

Now there is still a chance that you could get HPV even if you have the vaccine because HPV lies dormant, so if you had sex before you got the shot, you could have contracted it and it's not even about unprotected sex, because it can pass from skin to skin contact. That being said, 1 in 4 women have a strain of hpv.

if you have been going to the doctor regularly and getting paps, and this is your first abnormal one, i wouldn't stress it. i know several women who had colpos and they came back negative, some came back CIN 1 (which can be managed by the doctor through repeated paps and observation). At the worse, if you have a precancerous condition, they will just do a quick procedure in the office to remove the bad cells, and you will be fine. it actually hurts LESS than the colpo.

Okay but yes, it's possible the lesion he saw was a result of something else. I wouldn't worry if I were you. Just call and ask if you test was HPV positive.

how graphic will the google results be when I do them from home tonight? Can I successfully chew and swallow my dinner while the results pop up on the screen? I ask because I thought this was about colonoscopies like the other dudes in here, but I still don't know what this procedure is and I'm curious.

on the procedure and the biopsy portion sounds like it could be painful. And the fact it takes from 10 to 20 minutes seems like an eternity to me.

but to me its not graphic, just looking at the vaginal canal.

But they prop the vagina open with some metal fixture and extract tissue from your cervix.

I think the anxiety leading up to it was far worse than any other part of the process. And at the time I didn't have insurance so I had to go to County to get it done. I guess my practitioner shared the same waiting room as the clinic where they do pregnancy terminations. Some of the conversations I overheard... All of that had me far more on edge than anything else.

But thankfully everything was fine/normal. Here's hoping for similar results for you.

a while back but no further test were done and you want to check up on it. They may give your cervix an extra once over or ask for your previous records to check on it.
I'd just let them know

There is so little incentive to provide comfortable, pain free care to women that they basically go in and snatch bits of your cervix out with one of these...http://www.actclassy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG-Han.jpg

Can you imagine taking chunks out of a man's balls with a toothed claw repeatedly and offering nothing to numb them or pain medication afterward? Nope!

So nothing to numb you...
No information
No after care
and no indication how painful it will be for days afterward...

Then after all that it turns out you don't have cancer, if you are lucky, and it was all for not. You can't skip it because it might actually be cancer, which means you're at their mercy.

the sheer number of my friends who are having/have had problems of all kinds with their reproductive system is terrifying, and i feel like there is a lack of quality, useful info out there.

everything is set up like a pap then they put vinegar on your cervix, if you have any lesions, it turns them white and the doctor takes a sample. He puts a little medicine where he takes the biopsy (it's brown so you might spot a little after) and then it's over. The amount of biopsies depends on the amount of lesions but it's usually 2 snips, no more than 4. You may feel cramping after but it's not on the same level as cramping during your period.

It's not THAT bad but if its' the only thing you've been through, I can see how one would think of it as traumatizing. But I see women who have had several colpos and children and are like "this is nothing, get it done...do I cough now?"

Coughing makes it easier and less painful when they take the tissue sample.

I had one in November 2013 (it really feels like it was yesterday). I was sooooo stressed out about it during the weeks leading up to the procedure.

My doctor was really good and told me exactly what she was doing during the procedure. She only took one biopsy which hurt like hell but she assured me that I did not have cancer or anything major to worry about.
One thing that was a little surprising was the substance they used to patch up the biopsy, something that looked like coffee grounds was coming out of me for at least 24 hours if I remember correctly.

The biopsy showed low-grade changes and to follow up with another pap a year later. In October 2014 I had another pap that was normal and hpv negative. Now I'm back on the standard pap testing every three years.
