If the show was just about zombie attacks it wouldn't have made it past the 2 season.
The more interesting story is being told now which is how do you survive and how do people interact in a very dangerous world where resources are scarce and their is no rule of law.

There's very few tropes in television or movies more unoriginal than that. Same for Boardwalk's old ass white gangsters. But that aside, TWD is a show that affords people to see characters do things the way they would in a given situation. Anytime a character kills somebody, and I'm watching with someone, "I wouldn'ta did that" or "ssheeeit I'da done the same thing too!" seems to be the usual response list. It's fun for some folks to see 'real' do feasibly realistic things in a seemingly unrealistic situation.

For example the entire story with Michonne and the general-- although hard to stomach at times was a solid reflection of the darkness of the human heart, revenge, and the often sad dynamic between white men and black women.
That and the sheer brutality that many of the characters endure or express I think is a great character study of just how humanity would function in such a hopeless scenario.
I never read much farther than dude's son getting his eye shot out though.

Without mentioning specifics, some of the stuff in the comics aren't going to air on AMC. I'm thinking in particular of some of the graphic things that happen to Rick and Michonne. I like that the show varies from the comics since you don't know what's going to happen to an extent. I think the show stuffers because of the change in show runners in the past, which led to the show varying in quality and tone in terms of the storylines.

There's no angle or explanation that will help you understand why people love it so much. Usually when someone asks the "what's so great about this??", it results in that person shooting down all the reasons people love it. It's rarely asked in earnest.
That said, this is a character piece. End of story. The story and struggle of this particular group of characters is what draws most people.
-Carol going from meek, abusive housewife to all out badass, protector, and schemer who never hesitates to take someone out to protect the rest.
-Daryl and his angel wings going from a little brother who worshipped his selfish asshole of a big brother to any end to a dependable hunter, leader, and scout for the group. He went from a consumer to a provider.
-Michonne going from badass warrior to wise matriarch who has a keen sense for the right choice at all times.
-Rick going from Andy Griffith to The Punisher. All bad guys must die. Shoot first, duck the questions. He went from a strong leader to a loose cannon who is too far over the edge. Michonne steps in with wisdom when his leadership falters.
I could go on but why? The show isn't perfect, but most people find the characters compelling enough to care about their journey. If you don't get it, you won't.
