While listening to the "throwback" radio stations, I never realized how many TLC songs I DIDNT like. "Baby,Baby,Baby" is really the only one that I can listen to without changing the station.

But for them cats that always scream "Aaliyah woulda been bigger than Beyonce!"...rrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

the ones who were probably like in middle school or elementary school when she passed

there's like a weird eternal youth thing going on with her and them

and her vocals are very much in the vein of these new "future R&B" folks (SZA, Kelela, Twigs) which is why you see/hear a lot of aaliyah electronic flips as of late. none of them display particularly strong singing (even though they may have the capacity to do so-like Twigs) but the beats bang so folks are loving it but i do miss strong singing.

that's why beyonce was such a killer album b/c she swerved all in their lane w/ stronger vocals.

i had this discussion w/ someone about this at a party as we heard 8 aaliyah flips in one night.

i play some of the flips. theyre good. and i play old aaliyah cuts. i aim for the album joints "those were the days" and "loose rap" are my favorites to spin

but they legit had an aaliyah tribute party last year in NYC and i thought it was the most bizarre thing. partly b/c of who threw it but also because there really isn't enough material to cover a whole night of clubbing

the light skin, the bone straight hair, pouty lips. Her ability (however you rate it) was kind of a plus. Looking through her pics, none of them seem dated and could easily be Instagram fodder right now.

Streets won't let me chill.

she was getting reeeeal close to that crossover super appeal that the black female r&b/pop stars have now. She was definitely going to be the first and still going cus she would have been like 35 now.

let it shine through!!!!!!

Janet Jackson had a hard time getting love after 35, best believe Baby Girl woulda struggled to do so as well.

I remember buying the Aaliyah album and loving it, but people on the whole weren't that interested. We Need a Resolution tanked as a single and Rock the Boat was picking up steam, but it wasn't anywhere close to what Try Again did. Honestly, I think before she died, her star was fading a bit. Like I said, I loved the third album, but I remember a lot of people being disinterested in it.

No one would have ever given half a damn about any of those TLC girls on an individual level, it only worked as a package. Her rapping voice wasn't even "good". Nobody ever reached out to her for a feature (besides a radio jock turned rapper), they were straight novelty status.

I love alot of her work, and it sucks she died so early, but its baffling how she's stayed so influential since what she brought to the table (her voice, maybe some vocal phrasings) was so minimal to those songs

Queen of the Damned got terrible reviews and her album was already out when she died and it wasn't doing that great. I really don't see the evidence of her being primed to get any bigger than she already was.

It had been out for two months. Rock the Boat was a posthumous hit. It was just picking up steam when she passed. Like, dude I vividly remember that time. The album got positive reviews, but it was not selling well at all. I love the record, but the public was not that interested in it until she passed. As double 0 stated, it was mainly produced by unknowns with Static handling the writing duties.

People dont realize the DREAM TEAM was done before that album dropped..

Missy didn't write any records and Timbo did one song for that album..

A "new" album would've probably seen her totally revamp and who knows what that would've been..

I'm going to say it because none of y'all will:

Big was already as popular as he would ever be at the time of his passing. Ditto for Pac. No way in shit was Pac getting any more popular on that same Death Row route.

They legends and I love their music/legacies but someone has to keep it a buck round here.

*EDIT*

Why is insert artist trying to be Pac? Jay's nice but he's no Biggie.

but they made a pretty impactful punch while they were here enough where infamously people built careers from the vacuum they left with their passing.

What's an Aaliyah compared to a Janet Jackson, or even a Missy though? If it wasn't for her death, there's a good chance she would have just had an Ashanti level career.

Snoop's absolute peak could be seen as Doggystyle, or either somewhere around 2001...basically in way different ways. Even though his prime never topped either period...everything he has done since then has still helped cement his overall legend.

Jay for sure...some folks feel he peaked/primed in 2001-2003, and hasn't been the same since Black Album. Yet, he made his biggest hit ever in 2009, and has become a giant at a completely different level...which was built on his success as a rapper, but took a lot more than that to carry him on.

So yeah, Pac and Biggie may have been at a commercial peak, but as long as they didn't blatantly fall off and become wack/weirdos (or even how Lauryn Hill became)...their lives would have still reached greater heights due to the combined accolades they would have acquired after death.

Kind of like how athletes are...MJ could have peaked in 93, or 96, but he still got rings after, still broke and set records after.

I mean, dude had the panther connection. He shot the cops and got off. He had been shot and survived. That, alone, guaranteed he was going to be a legendary figure. The Biggie beef was really a footnote on an already eventful life.

Dude made 'I'm Sprung' and transformed the entire music industry.

ok..30 minutes? do you see him recreating that kind of success he saw a few years back?

i just think the timing of these comments + the release of his new mixtape in 3 years, isnt a coincidence

this is a lame way to drum up interest.

I have to admit, I was not a fan of Aaliyah while she was with R. Kelly. I just thought their whole odd couple relationship (wearing the same clothes, being around each other constantly, the whole marriage scandal shit that went down) was just..awkward.

However, when she got with Missy and Timbaland during the One In A Million era, and she became this confident, sexy, sophisticated young woman, shedding her tomboy look and taking charge of her career without R. Kelly being under her, that's when I started taking notice. She became fierce. Since then, I was an Aaliyah fan, and I rode with her before and after she died. So in a way, I can see where her die hard loyal fans are coming from.

Her albums may not have sold that well and won grammies, but there was something about her wholesome, sweet, respectable image that people adored, unlike all the hood rats of today's industry. And despite her complex history with Kellz, she never gave up making music and trying to become a household name while she was alive. She kept it moving.

Some people were saying he didn't deserve her on his record.
Man just let that mess slide.
He basically responded with "well she wasn't all that anyway"... which, in all honesty,
is kinda childish on the world stage platform... so it comes off like he's shitting on her
ONLY because somebody said he was undeserving.
HOWEVER, if you think about how talented T-Pain is and what he's accomplished, I
completely understand why he'd feel that way... he has the right.

I can appreciate that kind of honesty if I'm in the studio with him and he says something
like that, but seems like he would know better than to say that to the world with the kind
of fandom she accumulated posthumously... add that to the fact that she seemed to
be a decent person who died a pretty tragic death and you're really better off not
speaking on it at all... even tho I do understand him kinda feeling like "Do you know who
I am and what I've done?"

To be honest tho, I've always been surprised at the kind of status she was elevated to after
she passed, because I was there when she was alive, and she was just another R&B singer
during that time. She had joints I liked, but Timbo's production was the star of that show, imo...
because my favorite thing about all the Aaliyah songs I like is the production... unlike Missy whose creativity made even alotta average beats fun to listen to.

I could almost say the same about Janet Jackson. When Janet came out
with Control, nobody was checking for her airy voice and limited
voice range. They were checking for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis'
production that made Control legendary, and one of the most important albums in music history.

Plus Janet Jackson was a top notch dancer and performer which made up
for her singing. As far as singing, Janet Jackson was not in the same lane as her contemporary Whitney Houston.

I can dig that, but .... ok?

ding ding ding! "top notch dancer" with hits made her more than just another
R&B artist or MJ's little sister.
If this is a comparison to Aaliyah, you just made it clear why it's a bad one.
Add that to the fact that Janet has a lot more albums and did write alotta her songs
or at least have a hand in them.

I'm not sure why these points are being made. I hope you're not expected me to
argue against that, lol. Completely agree.

I agree with you about Aaliyah (I bought her albums for Tim's beats, first and foremost).
There's no denying that Janet and Aaliyah were similar; both had producers who helped create their success. I still remember Janet and Aaliyah
talked about working together which, if Aaliyah was still alive, would've been breathtaking.
