http://breakinartist.com/jay-z-roc-nation-purchase-tupacs-entire-album-catalog/

It’s been widely reported that rap mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has made another power move in the music industry. According to Joseph Borrino, CFO of Roc Nation, The label has recently acquired Tupac’s entire album catalog from Entertainment One who acquired it from Death Row Records in 2003. The purchase includes all of the masters to Tupac’s albums and unreleased material.

The purchase of Tupac’s album catalog is a monumental move in the music industry as Tupac is one of the highest selling Hip-Hop artists of our time. The purchase cost Jay-Z and Roc Nation $384 Million, giving Jay-Z rights to release all of the music that Tupac had created and released. The deal also gives Jay-Z exclusive rights to any music that is released which would feature any of Tupac’s songs or lyrics. “This is a phenomenal event for Roc Nation. We’ve purchased one of Hip-Hop’s greatest icon’s music which would make us one of the largest record labels in the world. We will forever be relevant in the music industry now that we own Tupac’s music,” according to Joseph Borrino.

With the purchase, Jay-Z’s net worth will be an estimated $2 Billion making him the wealthiest artist in the Hip-Hop industry. Plans have also been set in motion to release a new Tupac album in 2016 titled, And Now I Rise, which will feature Snoop Dogg (Snoop Lion), Drake, Nas, The Dream, DMX, Beyonce and of course Jay-Z. The album will be produced by Dr. Dre and Timbaland and will be made available via iTunes, Spotify and Jay-Z’s new music streaming service, TIDAL. According to Jay-Z, he released a statement through his CFO, Joseph Borinno, “I’m honored to be the new owner of Tupac’s album catalog. He is a legend in the music industry and set the standard of hard work when creating music. I will continue his legacy through Roc Nation and will ensure that we keep Tupac’s legacy alive. I will also give Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur 10% of all gross earnings made from the future sales of Tupac’s albums.”

Jay Z and Roc Nation Are Not Buying Tupac Shakur's Catalog of Unreleased Music
By Billboard Staff | March 28, 2015 4:13 PM EDT

Jay Z and Roc Nation Are Not Buying Tupac Shakur's Catalog of Unreleased Music

Rumors that hip-hop mogul Jay Z and Roc Nation have purchased the music catalog of Tupac Shakur's unreleased material for $384 million is not true, Billboard has confirmed.

Exclusive: Tupac Estate Gets 'Total Reset': New Music and More on the Way

The false rumors began surfacing on social media Saturday (March 28) that Jay Z had purchased Shakur's unreleased work from Entertainment One. Some reports also noted that a new album from the late rapper -- titled And Now I Rise -- would be released in 2016, with features by Snoop Dogg, Drake, Nas, The-Dream, DMX, Beyonce and Jay Z.

A representative for Roc Nation denies that any such acquisition has taken place.

As previously reported, however, there is new music and more on the way from Shakur, according to JAM Inc.'s Jeff Jampol, who oversees the late rapper's estate.

As the 20th anniversary of the Shakur's September 1996 death approaches, elements in the works include new apparel rolling out later in 2015, collections like a recent Grammy Museum exhibit showcasing his writing, and a biography by a "very serious writer" whose deal is being finalized, Jampol recently told Billboard.

Top of the list is the rapper's creative work -- "Almost an embarrassment of riches," Jampol says, listing "unreleased music, released music, remixes, original demos, writings, scripts, plans, video treatments, poems."

"Some of is in bits and pieces, some of it is complete; some of it is good, some of it needs work," says Tom Whalley, who signed Shakur to Interscope in 1991 and has explored much of the archive. "But I think the work that is left can be completed, and is worth his fans hearing."

New Tupac Music From the Vaults Headed for Release
Company behind posthumous Doors, Otis Redding projects now working with Shakur estate

Previously unreleased recordings by Tupac Shakur will come out as new releases now that a new company has begun handling the late rapper's estate.

Shakur's mother, Afeni, has been working with JAM, Inc. since 2013, according to Billboard, and has given the company access to everything in her collection. The company has consulted with the Michael Jackson estate and has worked with the Doors, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding, among others, on enriching their legacies.

Jeff Jampol, who owns JAM Inc., said he's dug through "unreleased music, released music, remixes, original demos, writings, scripts, plans, video treatments poems." Despite the fact that several posthumous Tupac albums have come out since the rapper's death in 1996, there is apparently still plenty of unreleased material. Jampol described his company's intention as giving the Shakur estate a "total reset."

Mike D Explains the Tupac-Biggie Feud »
"Some of is in bits and pieces, some of it is complete; some of it is good, some of it needs work," said Tom Whalley, who signed Shakur to Interscope and is working with Jampol on the project. "But I think the work that is left can be completed, and is worth his fans hearing."

One of the first steps was a recent Powerade commercial, which featured Shakur reciting the "rose that grew from concrete" line from "Mama's Just A Little Girl." Another was the conversation between Shakur and Kendrick Lamar on the latter rapper's recent "Mortal Man," a track on To Pimp a Butterfly, which was culled from a 1994 interview with Shakur.

Whalley said he'd considered doing a project similar to the Bob Dylan project Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, in which other musicians sang "lost" Dylan lyrics in songs they wrote. The Lamar interpolation came around the time he was considering that.

Other components in the project include the rapper's recent Grammy Museum exhibition and a biography. Jampol is currently negotiating with an author for that, whom he describes as a "very serious writer."
