‘Daily Show': Trevor Noah Emerges on Short List to Replace Jon Stewart (EXCLUSIVE)

MARCH 27, 2015 | 06:03PM PT
Brian Steinberg
Senior TV Editor
@bristei

Trevor Noah joined “The Daily Show” as a contributor only at the end of last year, but he could soon find himself serving as an integral part of the program.

Noah is gaining consideration as a potential successor to Jon Stewart, the Comedy Central mainstay’s longtime host, according to a person familiar with the matter, and if successful, could get a crack at becoming one of the more influential voices in latenight.

There is no guarantee that Noah will inherit Stewart’s seat, and no final decision has been reached, this person cautioned. Comedy Central’s selection process has accelerated in recent days, this person said. And Noah, a South African comedian, has moved to a short list being put together by executives at the Viacom-owned cable outlet.

A Comedy Central spokesman declined to comment on whether Noah was under consideration, or on efforts to identify a new host for “The Daily Show.”

The looming choice is crucial for Comedy Central. “The Daily Show” is arguably the network’s signature show, and Comedy Central last year bid farewell to another latenight mainstay, Stephen Colbert. He anchored “The Colbert Report,” a half-hour program following “The Daily Show” that gave Comedy Central a one-two punch in the fight to woo young audiences to its schedule. He will soon take up David Letterman’s place on CBS’ “Late Show.” The search for Stewart’s successor takes place as Comedy Central is showing a new program in Colbert’s 11:30 p.m. slot, “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore,” which uses comedy to explore culture, politics and race.

Comedy Central is already the only network to feature an African-American host in latenight: Larry Wilmore, a veteran producer and writer whose program has won some plaudits even as it continues to experiment with its format. Should Noah get the nod, the network would add a black comedian to the timeslot as competitors rely on white males and as many TV networks recognize the need to appeal more directly to America’s growing multicultural viewership.

Like Stewart, Noah is no stranger to tackling thorny issues. In South Africa, he was known for riffing on the topics of race and politics, even using his mixed-race parentage to get laughs. Noting that his mother is a black South African and his father a white Swiss, he once told an audience, “I was born a crime,” according to a 2013 report in the Wall Street Journal.

And he has experience with wee-hours programming, He hosted a latenight show in South Africa for two seasons, according to a biography located at his website, which bills him as the first standup comedian from South Africa to appear on either NBC’s “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” or CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman.”

Since Stewart announced in February he expected to step down from his perch at the program sometime between July and the end of 2015, a number of obvious candidates to succeed him have made plans of their own. Samantha Bee, a veteran “Daily Show” contributor, has accepted a deal to start a similar “funny-news” program at Time Warner’s TBS. Both she and her husband, “Daily Show” contributor Jason Jones, are also producing a comedy for that network, in which Jones will star. Jessica Williams, another rising “Daily Show” presence, recently took to Twitter to declare herself “unqualified” for the role.

“The Daily Show” has had just two hosts since launching on Comedy Central in 1996: Craig Kilborn and Jon Stewart. Both were in their 30s when they took the reins of the program, and both were seen as up-and-comers, not entrenched players in the TV business. Noah was born in 1984, which would make him about 31 years old.

Under Kent Alterman, president of original programming, Comedy Central has sought people able to articulate a unique world view. The network has found success with programs featuring comedienne Amy Schumer as well as Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, a duo who star in the program “Broad City.”

Cynthia Littleton contributed to this report.

His standup isn't for everyone since it's Vegas desert dry; personally I find it ok.

However, since much of the humor in Daily Show requires dry wit+delivery it's a good rock to build on. However, Stewart was more of an alternative comedian...it would be interesting if they drew someone from that scene as opposed to someone who could hit the ground running

Also, forever kudos to comedy central for putting two negros back to back in late night

dude's standup could be the most wholesome, unoffensive, milquetoast bits in the world, doesn't matter. Giving the biggest cable late-night spot to a non-white, non-American, who has only appeared on the show three times still has to be considered a risky move.

I don't know if any of you saw the documentary he has on Netflix...but some of his South African comedian peers jaws gonna be TIIIIIIIIIIGHT AS SHIT off this.

Personally, I think he'd fit perfectly....be able to slant the jokes to an outsider's perspective....makes sense.

plus I was really excited for Larry Wilmore to get a show but the whole format of that thing is off to me, I tapped out after the first week (but I want to check back in soon and see if anything's changed, maybe this week). so I'm preparing for Comedy Central's news skewering to be on the downswing, can't help but feel trepidation here.

Comedy Central's President on Why Trevor Noah Was Chosen as the Next 'Daily Show' Host (Q&A)

by Georg Szalai
3/30/2015 9:37am PDT

Comedy Central on Monday announced that 31-year-old South African comedian Trevor Noah would take over The Daily Show from Jon Stewart.

Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless discussed the rationale behind the decision, the skill set the young performer brings to the job, how his global perspective will help and and how Noah and Larry Wilmore fit together.

How did you come to your decision on Jon's replacement? What was the process?

It's a very specific job, and you need a very specific skill set. And when you start to think about who have all the right qualities to host The Daily Show, it becomes a very short list very quickly. Trevor was on that list from day one. The more time we spent with him, the more it became apparent he was the right person for the job.

Did you look for a new Jon Stewart?

There is only one Jon Stewart. So, we did not look for the next Jon Stewart. We were looking for someone who brings a really unique and distinct point of view that's really appropriate for 2015 and the coming years, who could evolve The Daily Show for the next generation. Trevor is so smart and so funny and such a citizen of the world that it just became very clear that he could do this job better than anyone else.

How important is that global perspective that Trevor brings to the table?

The world is becoming smaller and smaller every day, so having someone with a global perspective is important for us domestically, not to mention internationally. The world seems to be shrinking in terms of the speed with which information gets disseminated and what people know of different parts of the world. And to have somebody who is very agile in that sense is a big plus for us.

What skill set does a Daily Show host need?

It is about being wickedly funny, extremely bright, being a voracious student of news and pop culture and of the world. They must have an incredible work ethic. This is a hard job, arguably the hardest job in television, I would say. It's 160 shows a year‎, 20-plus minutes of fresh material every night of the week. The fact that Jon has done it for almost 17 years is remarkable, and the next person coming in has to be able to continually reinvent themselves. And I think we have seen even in Trevor's short career how he is able to grow and reinvent himself.

What role did or does Trevor's social media following play?

Trevor has a huge social media following. He has over 2 million followers just on Twitter alone and many, many more on Facebook and Instagram, etc. He has a very large fan base internationally, and he is poised to explode here and certainly that can only help.

Some observers are wondering why you did not choose a woman? Were women in the running for this?

We talked to women. We talked to men. And the more we talked to Trevor, the more we realized he was the best person for the job. Thank God I did not have to do this on my own. We had the core senior team here at Comedy Central along with our boss Doug Herzog who runs the Viacom Music and Entertainment Group‎, and Jon was our advisor throughout the process.

How do Trevor and Larry Wilmore fit together in terms of comedic sensibilities and target audience?

We love Larry and Trevor for completely different reasons, and I don't know that they have even ever met. Perhaps we should introduce them. First and foremost, it was finding the person with the right set of skills for The Daily Show. The franchise at the core, what The Daily Show is, is not going to change. The Nightly Show is such a great companion that I think they will continue to be good companion programming for each other.

Trevor is the son of a black mother and a white father. So, some may say you will now have a late-night lineup with two black hosts and wonder if that is by design.

This is not by design. Trevor and Larry were hired because they are the right people for these jobs.

Late night comedy overall is in flux. What does that mean for you?

It's a real opportunity for us. What The Daily Show does in late night is so different from any other late-night comedy show. Truly, no other show is doing the kind of political satire that The Daily Show does. So I think the audience that watches is looking for that. With a new host coming in, it's an opportunity to bring new attention to the show, and in a perfect world, gain more viewers.

Any ratings targets for Trevor?

No. The way the world views our content now has changed dramatically, so that we don't just look at what our ratings are, how many people are watching it online, on our sites, on their phones, on our app. More is better, and I think there is huge upside with Trevor as host.

Have other talent or show details been set yet?

It's way too early for any creative conversations, but we will get into all of that in the coming months. Some time before the end of this year, we will have an end date for Jon and a start date for Trevor.

How do you think Trevor will get over with the audience?

All they are going to need is to see Trevor perform, and the way the world works today, people will go online and start watching his comedy and they'll see how fantastic he is. I think he is going to surprise the world.

and if i didn't think it would have taken away from all the other good shit he does, i think he could have killed that shit. i used to listen to him talk politics occasionally on O&A, he's got a real gift for breaking shit down.

but since we can't clone him, Louie needs to just keep doing what he's doing.

I would have liked to see Tina Fey though. She's sharp, funny, established. I think it could be an easy transition.

Louie is completely happy doing what he's doing.

And Tina Fey isn't really built for that gig.

just saying, i could see it

and I completely disagree about Fey

I don't know anything about Trevor Noah other than his appearances on the show have been whatever.

if he proves me wrong, i'm all for it, but i wont pretend i'm not disappointed.

Do any white entertainers self-identify as "part Jewish"? Harrison Ford?

Can Harrison Ford make jokes about hitting Jewish kids with his German car? I don't know. It probably wouldn't go over well.

As far as the article goes, I think W. Kamal Bell would've sucked as host of TDS but his writer, Hari Kondabolu, (sp?) could've been great. He should be a correspondent @ least.

Comedy Central Releases Statement in Support of Trevor Noah in Response Social Media Backlash

By Tambay A. Obenson | Shadow and Act March 31, 2015 at 3:54PM

In case you haven't heard yet, since the announcement that South African comic Trevor Noah will succeed exiting Jon Stewart as the host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" (just yesterday actually), he's been subjected to expected scrutiny via the web, as some scoured his past work and his social media accounts for information about the comedian, finding a number of posts on his Twitter account that they deemed to be offensive, to women and Jews.

Noah and Comedy Central I'm sure expected this. I'd suspect that Comedy Central vetted him thoroughly before they selected him as Stewart's successor, and were likely very ready for the onslaught of criticism that would follow, and has evidently followed.

The network has now released a statement in response to the fracas, stating: "Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central."

Clearly a vote of support from the network, implying that he's not going anywhere, despite the negative press over reactions to his past tweets.

A Twitter member since 2009, Noah has accumulated more than two million followers, and is known for his irreverent posts on popular culture, global politics and matters of race. As with many comedians, his jokes do push the boundaries of what is socially permissible and what's considered in bad taste.

For example, in one Twitter post from 2011, he writes: “Oh yeah the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I’m sexy!” a quote that he attributes to "fat chicks everywhere."

In another post from last year, 2014, he quotes another Twitter user who writes, "When a woman is loved correctly, she becomes 10 times the woman she was before;” to which Noah adds: "So she gets fat?"

And in another 2009 post, Noah has posted jokes about Jewish people and about Israel. As he wrote: "Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!"

Another post from 2010 reads, "South Africans know how to recycle like israel knows how to be peaceful."

But he's an equal opportunity social critique, making fun of Americans, South Africans and people from numerous other countries. For example, when a fan tweeted at him last October, asking him to please come to Texas, Mr. Noah replied: "But you’ve already got Ebola?"

And although many have criticized Noah, suggesting that he may not be the right man for the job, Comedy Central clearly isn't concerned, given their response above - essentially a declaration of support for the comedian, who will fill Jon Stewart’s seat after he exits as host of the satirical news series.

But really, is there a comedian worth their salt today, who may have been on Comedy Central's short list of candidates for the job, who hasn't said anything publicly that someone somewhere would find offensive? Isn't that kind of expected?

I think, in time, much of this will be history, and we'll all move on eventually. Unless something really damning surfaces. But, again, I suspect that Comedy Central thoroughly vetted him before handing him the keys to the kingdom.
