"they know your name but you don't know theirs."
Fri Mar-27-15 09:56 AM by SoWhat

the guy who picks up and delivers my dry cleaning at the office knows my name. i don't know his. i feel like i've interacted w/him too many times to ask his name now. so i just never use it and he always greets me by name.

there's a courtroom deputy in the courthouse who also greets me by name and she's really nice but i dunno hers. which is a shame b/c she's one of the few if not the only black woman courtroom deputy and i'm one of few black man lawyers in the building. i always speak to her - usually in passing. but i don't ever use her name and she always uses mine.

and, of course, i have too many clients whose names i dunno when i see them and they tend to know mine. but that's likely b/c they have only one lawyer meanwhile i have dozens/hundreds of clients. LOL

for yrs i've been adept at getting through casual social interactions w/o using names - and i'm still good at it. but i'm increasingly uncomfortable w/this habit. i need to get better about learning names.

do you go through life like this too?
or do you have any tricks for remembering names?

fuck you.

sometimes people know my name and i don't even know HOW they know

like i've seen them but haven't interacted but then all of a sudden "Hey Rick"

"Hey, how's it going?"

i've always been like this though i think...but especially since I work in IT and work directly with internal customers

similar 1 to many relationship but yea...i think i've always been this impersonal when it comes to names

whose name you don't remember.

You are either rude and don't do an introduction or introduce the person you are with and hope the other person introduces themselves.

Sometimes it works well if you are with someone important like a spouse, S.O. bc you can put the emphasis on them meeting your S.O. for instance but if its just a co-worker or something like that you are with, it can be awkward.

If I don't know someone's name and I need to know it, and I know for a fact they have already introduced themselves. I will take someone with me who I know that person has not met and provide them an opportunity to introduce themselves by simply saying "I don't think you two have met before." and like clockwork both people interrupt me and immediately introduce themselves. It has never failed.

these could be people i've worked with and know well and used to call by name on a daily basis. a couple years removed, man i'm sorry i forgot your damn name. whenever i'm with my wife and i run into someone like that i always introduce her first by name and hope that they just introduce themselves and say what their name is Haha. sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. i usually feel like a dickhead though.

How to Remember People’s Names
By MALIA WOLLAN
FEB. 27, 2015

If you are the name-forgetting type, you probably spend a fair amount of time feeling unmoored in a sea of vaguely familiar faces. Indira Pun does not have this problem. “Sometimes I see a guest I have not seen for years, and right away I know their name,” says Pun, chief concierge at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong. “I exercise that like a muscle.” After 11 years in the business and thousands of names committed to memory, Pun has a few name-recollection-workout suggestions.

First, concentrate during an introduction. “Your brain needs to be like a camera,” she says. Listen carefully to the person say his or her name, then “take a picture in your mind of a unique thing about that person and register that uniqueness with their name.” Maybe that person has an odd mole or walks like a ballerina. As soon as the mental photo is shot, start saying the name. “Use the name two or three times during the first interaction,” Pun says.

When meeting important people, do a little homework ahead of time. Pun and the other concierges circulate photographs and notes on pronunciation. For the rest of us, a few minutes of study can make an encounter with a job interviewer or a new boss less nerve-racking; their names and likenesses are already familiar.

Don’t fear foreign-sounding names. “A difficult name is easier to remember because you put a lot of stress on yourself to remember it,” says Pun, 35, who was born in Hong Kong to Nepalese parents, educated in Singapore and speaks English, Nepalese, Mandarin, Cantonese and “a little bit of everything.”

If you are not sure how to pronounce a name, Pun suggests that you try it and let the person help you. Being corrected is better than not saying the name at all. Neuroimaging studies show that the sound of our own names produces distinct activity patterns in the regions of our brains responsible for our sense of self. “Everyone likes to hear their name,” Pun says.

I know not ONE of their names..well..I know maybe 2 of their last names..(why do security folks only call each other by the last name????)....

The Black security guard that I've never seen before spots me going to the restroom. He says "What's happening CHIEF?" I couldn't believe he called me CHIEF. I thought that was only for forgetting someone's name or cracking a joke. I lightweight wanted to not speak to him on my way out, but I did.

As I was leaving I said "Take it easy" and he goes "you too chief." :-/

my regulars freak out when I remember their names but I dunno it's always been something I'm really good at. *shrug*

grew up in the burbs and seen a rack of people from HS. Now, I'm Black and no one has my name so of course everyone remembers my name.

I'm looking at white people who I haven't seen in 15 years who look like they aged 30 years like "who the fuck are you"

and these white people are offended.

One dude was like "you don't know my name?...I know you, really dude, REALLY"

I go: John? wait.. Brad? ... Riiiichard"

"Dont worry about it, just no that I know who you are and you don't know me"

I don't feel that bad that the janitor in my building remembered my name, and I forgot his, but for old college friends? I'm talking people you, lived with, drank with, went to class with, shared some of the most awesome memories you ever had, but you can't for some reason recall their name. That crap bothers me for days afterwards when someone greets me enthusiastically with a hearty..."Adg!!"

Not only that, but they know my entire life. Weekly, 2-3 people will ask and tell me everything about me. But it's not even on some fam stuff where they tell me who they are...it's obvious that I've met them before, maybe even had a convo. But i just won't remember them at all.
