"No post about Taraji pulling her kid out of USC and sending him to HU"

because he was racially profiled??

That's that good rich Black person privilege there....
Personally....I think it's a dumb move. But I don't have all the details...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/25/usc-taraji-p-henson-racial-profiling-claims_n_6941084.html

Taraji P. Henson’s decision to enroll her son at Howard University as a result of the 20-year-old’s experience with racial profiling by police at the University of Southern California has prompted a series of reactions.

Henson previously told Uptown magazine that she would rather transfer her son to Howard, which is a Historically Black College or University, to lessen his chances of being racially profiled. Her comments have attracted the attention of numerous fans, media outlets and has even prompted the National Action Network to call for an investigation into the USC's police department.

In addition to the many responses, one official at the University of Southern California addressed Henson's claims and expressed interest in looking further into the issue in hopes of finding a resolution.

USC’s Department of Public Safety John Thomas, who has spent 21 years as a member of the Los Angeles Police Department prior to joining the staff at USC, made the following statement:

"Seasons may come and your luck just may run out, and all that you'll have is some memories..."

No offence meant to you, but I'm gonna think about whatever I want, in whatever order I want.

Very first sentence dude:

"Taraji P. Henson’s decision to enroll her son at Howard University"

But it's "interesting" that that's what I thought of first? smh.

Not gonna say what u said is straight silly....Don't get down like that...

But...damn homie....The move to Howard isn't questionable because it's somehow a lesser choice in education in the big scheme of things (Fortune 500 companies recruit from schools like Howard and Morehouse at a very high clip....)

It's a silly move because Tarji's son is going to be fucked with no matter where he goes...Especially in DC...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

I still recall mine with fondness....but at the same time...after 15 years in the workforce....seeing what i've seen...learning what i've learned....I honestly think i'd be doing my little one a disservice by pushing her down the HBCU path.

Unless of course HBCU's in general correct course and update their goals and purpose to align with modern times.

She said it best, why waste her $ on a college that does not accept her son?

Not to say that can't happen at ANY college (happens to black men no matter where), but the odds are reduced at an HBCU

Not to mention Howard is a better school than USC.

Hopefully her kid wanted to do so, because if he didn't that's a whole new can of worms.

Indeed! That's one thing that burns me up....real talk...a HUGE reason I went to an HBCU (AGGIE PRIDE!!) was because it was drummed in my head from like 1st grade on up..... I've made it work....but ultimately...I REALLY feel like i'd be in a career that aligned more with the dreams I had as a youth if i'd gone somewhere else.

what do you think would have been different if you went to a pwi?
is it connections that could have been made to get you further in your career?
the pwi learning experiences and schools that would have opened more doors?

I opted to roll with Architectural Engineering and went to an HBCU because the engineering program was well respected. I discovered quickly that my engineering education wasn't quite as rigourus and structured as comparable program at the next closest school with the same major.. (Penn State).

The social aspects were GREAT...and have DEF made me the man I am today....but given my already fairly pro-Black and forward thinking mindset throughout high school and heading into college....I think I would have been able to get that social enrichment no matter where I went to school honestly.

they did the first two years of engineering course work at CAU and then the remaining two years of course work at Georgia Tech.

now that i am older, i realize that most likely creating that type of partnership between schools took some work and must have been championed by some remarkable folks.

It's def a good way to move forward....alTHOUGH....I worry that the impression is going have the affect of diminishing the respect for previous graduates of HBCU's even more. On some..."once again, we gotta help those screwed up darkies out."....

But even still... in the 90's Clark over A&T woulda been a dummy move lol...

And still I took on Engineering in lieu of my true desire to go into straight Architectural Design program.

1. LA is actually a huge feeder-city for Howard
2. She went to Howard herself
3. Her money, she can spend it how she wants

its kinda a non-story

purely on it's own merit, her reasoning is off though

Howard isn't Oz.

Going there comes with its own set of issues (and as stated, he can easily get profiled there too)

She turned it into a USC vs. HU thing....which she should know is going to take the narrative and dialogue in a COMPLETELY different direction away from the core issue....

Like you're saying....it's likely more of a regional thing than a specific USC thing.

Washington DC is a GREAT region for people of color and different nationalities....

not just because im a USC alum, but these types of decisions should be based on the education he will receive. all that racial profiling shit is just bullshit.

whats his major? is the program for that major at USC better than the program at HU? what about opportunities for internships, fellowships, etc? what about a network?

I know shes rich and can pay to fill the gaps, but i would think it better to encourage him to make his own way as much as he can.

i also think its kinda weak to remove a child (actually a grown man) from this type of danger instead of teaching them how to deal with it. racial profiling is a fact of being black, not necessarily of location or education.

the story is getting more fleshed out now due to the backlash she received though.
The initial story I read yesterday (pre-revisions) presented him as a current USC student...

Jamal: Hol'lup a minute. My brother is calling me.

*answers*

Jamal: Hello? Fool, where you at? Why wasn't you at the studio today?

Hakeem: YO, JAMAAAAAL! Cookie done went crazy!

Jamal: *rolls eyes* Oh God. What, you mad she told you that flippin' off the governor wasn't a good idea?

Hakeem: No, 'Mal, you gotta lissen to me! I got arrested the other day!

Jamal: For...?

Hakeem: For being Black, man!

Jamal: Hakeem...

Hakeem: Swear'ta God, 'Mal! I was walking home from the club sober for once! Trying to get my act together! Then the police they like--hold up

*bublbing sounds are heard*

Jamal: What's that?

Hakeem: I'mma get to that. So, I'm walkin' right?

Jamal: Yeah...

Hakeem: ...and the next thing I know I round a corner, and it's like three cops, chillin, havin' doughnuts and shit. They take one look at me and fifteen seconds later, I'm on the ground in handcuffs with a boot on my head! I ain't even do anything wrong!

Jamal: ...so Mom came and got you out of jail?

Hakeem: You shoulda seen it, 'Mal! She cussed everybody out!

*flashback*

Cookie strolls into the police station in a fur, Porsha behind her.
COokie: WHERE IS HE?! Where is my son?!

Police Officer #1: Not so loud, Mrs. Lyon...

Cookie: "Not so loud?"!" You ain't HEARD me get loud yet! WOULD YA LIKE TO, Officer *reads badge* Harris?!?

Porsha: *holding an ear* That's pretty loud, boss.

Cookie: Shut up, Porsha! *regains composure, to officer* You locked up my baby. I wanna see him.

PO #1: But, Mrs. Lyon...

Cookie: NOW!

*They go to the holding cell and open it. As another officer begins opening the door, Cookie runs for the cell door, arms stretched as if she's ready to hug Hakeem. But instead, she hits the officer opening the door over the head with a nightstick from her purse, grabs Hakeem from the cell, and begins closing the door*

Cookie: (to the other people in the jail cell) Sorry, y'all. He goes, y'all stay.

*Porsha uses a hairpin to deactivate the emergency back door and they all escape out. Once they've gotten a good distance away, Cookie turns to Hakeem*

CookieL: Oh, Hakeem...baby, are you okay?!

Hakeem: I'm fine now, Mom...thanks for busting me outta there!

*she hugs him, hard, tears streaming*

Cookie: (to Hakeem, in police station waiting room after being freed): Oh Baby, I promise you...this is NEVER going to happen to you again...

*/flashback*

Hakeem: At first I thought she was gonna have Empire sue the police force or something, But naw! She decided to hide me away in the one place police would be scared to look for me!

Jamal: And where is that? Duluth?

Ryan: Australia?

Jamal: Shut up, Ryan!

Hakeem: Naw! *more bubbling sounds* Inside of Dad!

*dramatic music starts underneath*

*camera trucks in on Jamal*

Jamal: What? Inside of...Dad?

*wider shot of Hakeem shows him in a bubble, shrunken down and surgically implanted into Lucious' small intestine*

Hakeem: She bought a shrinking gun offa some dude named Ray Palmer and shrunk me down to like mad small!

*dramatic ass stinger music*

Hakeem: I'm trapped inside of Lucious Lyon!

*cut to commercial*

Too many times this shit is swept under the rug and only the friends and family know about how hostile college life can be for young black kids. I wish more folks would do the same instead of just sucking it up a nd continuing like nothing ever happened.
Homeboy at UVA getting bust in the head over his non-fake ID or that reporter who's son was profiled at Harvard or Yale.
Put it all out on front street.

Last year and she was there. The talk of the night was encouraging kids to go to HBCU so... no big surprise here..

this was an excuse to get him on the yard....

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
