so his circle analogy doesn't hold. empire...one gay person out of like 15 regular cast members who are Blk, Black-ish...one guest character who is gay, out of a regular cast of all str8s...even with reality tv most Blk ppl on those shows aren't gay (many are ratchet tho)

some (I wont say most but maybe) Black ppl have a problem with gay characters on Blk shows because they have a problem with homosexuality.

the best thing for them to do would be to get over it, and characters like jamal may help

because gay ppl are gonna be on tv, period, so either stop watching or continue to be disturbed.

feminine Blk men are seen as less threatening but best believe if his Black ass wild'd the fuck out or got turned up and some cops around he'd be taken down like any other nigga

so this was a pretty misguided (I really wanna just call it shitty) video but we all our entitled to our own opinion and im glad u were so enamored with it....

of its way to demonize homophobia the way homosexuality had been demonized in culture.

Jamal is easily, and by a country mile, the most level-headed and balanced regular character on the program, and the only truly homophobic characters on the shoe are evil-ass Lucious Lyon, a handful of thugs, and some struggle rappers.

For example, when Jamal came out at the white party, the camera cuts to every other series regular (pus Naomi Campbell for good measure) and shows them reacting positively - except for Lucious.

And so many people are so dense as to fall right into the show's crosshairs. Maybe they'd've thrown their gay sons into the garbage too.

Are people mad at the story line for Jamal? Most people I know are rooting for him to win.

I don't really take the criticism for the show seriously because most people are mad at the show just because it's winning. Regardless of the story lines people would hate on it because it gets them clicks or gets their name out there with these horrible opinion pieces.

>Are people mad at the story line for Jamal? Most people I

Jamal's scenes, if not his storyline, make a lot of people uncomfortable. One of them, oddly, was Terrence Howard, who fought (and lost) to have the kissing scenes between Jamal and his boyfriend excised from the pilot for fear of teh ghey sabotaging the show.

There are quite a few comments online (I know, _I know_) hoping for less "gay kissing/sex scenes", and I've noticed when radio DJs interview the other "Empire" cast members, they sort of tend to speak out of both sides of their mouth about Jamal and/or Jussie Smollett - if he's not there, of course.

You mean like the dummy who made that video thinkpiece that some of y'all's cousins tried to get me to watch? The one that said "Empire" was out to feminine males through the Jamal character (and on what planet is Jamal feminine?)

now, I'm not saying its true or if it's good or bad but it FEELS like producers are being told to add a gay person to every new show.

It is what it is.. and maybe researches have concluded that gays watch a shit load of TV.

I'm sure someone without something to do can run that list and find some without gay characters.

And by "gay characters", are you only including leads or are you also including recurring and guest spots. Because there's no gay lead characters on "black-ish" (I don't recall that a gay character has said one line of dialogue on that program yet) - Raven-Symone's playing the lesbian sister as a guest shot in an upcoming episode that may or may not lead to a recurring role.

Any gay characters on "Power"? "Survivor's Remorse"?

gays are slightly more visible on TV this season as compared to some past seasons and so maybe that's why it feels to you like gays are on "EVERY NEW SHOW". kinda like how that racist bitch at Deadline complained that Blacks are taking 50% of the roles in TV this pilot season just b/c of a few race-blind casting choices and some other race-specific castings on a handful of shows being produced recently. our increased visibility where we were previous invisible makes it seem like we're EVERYWHERE to ppl who are not accustomed to seeing us on TV (and/or who don't want to see us on TV).

fuck you.

is in the circle... which would be why I steer clear of tv as I try my best to only deal
with positive Black images.

>some (I wont say most but maybe) Black ppl have a problem with
>gay characters on Blk shows because they have a problem with
>homosexuality.
>
>the best thing for them to do would be to get over it, and
>characters like jamal may help

I'll let Gazi himself respond to that:
"White People have the highest rates for Gay Suicides. Especially among white gay teens.
Why didn't Kerry Washington talk about that?
Black Homophobia was created by Slavery and Colonialism. What are these other
races excuses for being so homophobic?"

>feminine Blk men are seen as less threatening but best believe
>if his Black ass wild'd the fuck out or got turned up and some
>cops around he'd be taken down like any other nigga

I promise you, he wouldn't disagree with that. The point he was making is that
feminine Black men are seen as less threatening... with which you admittedly agreed
in the first sentence there.

18. "if you don't like the state of tv, why do you watch tv?"
In response to Reply # 0

I am not bragging about not watching tv.
I am merely stating I have no idea who these characters are because I haven't seen empire yet.

and I haven't watched that video
because I don't care that much about empire.

and if a character is gay, I don't see a problem.

even if "every" show had one gay character, I wouldn't care because every
person on earth probably knows a gay person.

and since nothing is wrong with being gay,
and everybody probably knows a gay person,
there is no reason for television to reflect that.

but if gay ppl on television
causes you serious distress,
it is okay to aboid television.

I quit watching 10 years ago,
mostly because i did not see
enough ppl on tv that reminded me of me.

if you are in the same place I was at,
do anything else in the world but watch tv.

or, make a post like this.

talk it out.

I, on behalf of the gay community,
am not sorry that gay ppl weird you out.
you are in your feelings right now
so I will won't harp on you too bad.

but I think your life will be easier
if you find a way to not be mad.

hater, heal thy self.

if a show doesn't move you enough to make you watch it,
why does it move you enough to research it?

and post about it?

what is it about the fact that there is a gay character
on a show you've never seen?

are you thinking about what the ppl that
watch the show are thinking about
when they see a gay man?

what do you think about when you see a gay man?

do you feel uncomfortable about
gay men's presence on screen,
and what that means about society?

do you question your relationships
with men and wonder if one of them
is gay or whether this show may influence
them to be gay?

would you rather people not be
shown images of gay men on televison,
even though most men know a gay man in
real life?

why do you have these feelings of distress?

are you sad that people in society
may notice more gay men?

do you feel powerless to make the world
appear less gay than it sometimes is?

that's rough.

>I don't really have a response to it.

our society. Why? Because that creates and informs stereotypes.
I watched the video because it's on my timeline.
I shared it because he said made some unique points.
Gay ppl don't "distress" me. You seem more distressed that I shared the video than anything.

The post about a video on facebook. The video on facebook is about Black representation
in media, what it consists of in his view (ratchetness and homosexuality). I thought
that part was self-explanatory. My bad.

it's self explanatory if you are in the habit

about art you have never seen.

for everyone else,
it's weird.

That's not anti-gay at all, and that's VERY far from saying two ppl can't love each other.
It's not even on the same coin.

How I define sex has no bearing on how I feel about you as a gay or bi person.
You seem to want that to be the case so that you can feel persecuted tho.

Except, there was no such lecture there. You interpreted it that way, because you
sleep with men. Which is fine with me, but you gotta admit you saw everything I
said through those lenses.

So it wasn't me who brought up homosexuality.
It was you who infused that line of thinking into everything I said and then projected it
onto me.

"what is sex?" was the question.
"when a penis goes into a vagina," was your answer.

this definition means gay ppl can't have sex.

which is a fairly vile and ridiculous thing to say.

i didn't even mention gay ppl in that post
until you brought it up.

why did you bring it up?

so why did you make it about the ghey?
why are so many of your posts about the ghey?

Here you go creating a narrative to fit the persecution you desire.
I didn't bring up homosexuality in the post.

All the rest of this "why u always bring up the ghey huh?" stuff is more of you

why would anybody take your views on this topic seriously?

how you gonna have an opinion on
shit you haven't watched?

did you even go back to watch the show
to see if this video is an accurate representation of empire?

or do you just believe that every video
that shows up on your facebook feed is true?

do they still teach critical thinking in schools? when i was middle school, i learned about primary and seconday sources.

i learned that I should be hesitant to
accept an opinion if I have not researched
the original source material that informed the secondary source.

this is why i defend eminem.
eminem says some reprehensible shit,
but often it seems the ppl criticizing him
for saying reprehensible things are reacting to what they read about eminem
instead of eminem's actual art.

i laugh at the opinions of ppl that
can't research their opinion before they express it.

it's a sad thing.

>our society. Why? Because that creates and informs
>stereotypes.

>I watched the video because it's on my timeline.

i am laughing at a guy that is agreeing
with opinions he has not researched.

63. "why must there always be *THE* definitive consensus opinion"
In response to Reply # 0

on something that by its nature - will elicit a wide variety of opinions?

I mean I get that people are all hype about the anti "new black" opinions
of kanye, common, skateboard etc... but to try and marginalize or say that
it is not a legitimate opinion would seem to suggest that there *is* an acceptable
monolithic opinion that must always be espoused, and when anyone strays
from that alleged consensus, they must be punished w/ collective outrage.

Is that productive?

there doesn't have to be a consensus opinion.

Com can have his opinion all he wants. and those of us who disagree may ridicule him mercilessly for it.

fuck you.

67. "I think it depends on the issue really..."
In response to Reply # 63

to most, it depends on the status of the person stating the opinion.

I think people jump overboard with their responses a lot because of status too.
For instance, I've seen ppl saying "Common said we should extend a hand in love"
when Common actually said "I'M extending a hand in love" and didn't tell anybody to
do anything. I think Common's smarter than to think that that'll work, but I also
think it's good that people reminded him of the regular folks out here who didn't
just win an Oscar or just experienced police brutality yesterday after kicking it with
they're white friends. I ain't about calling ppl dummies and all that, but we can all
stand to be told where our opinions are lacking and told when we in coon territory.

As far as an acceptable monolithic opinion, it depends on the goal or the supposed values.
You can't sell crack to Black folks and then say you're about uplifting the Black community.

and there's this strange attempt to lump what he said in with the idiocy of what Raven Simone has been saying, which is also a reckless journalistic attempt.

75. "Hmmmm."

Firstly, I don't agree with the premise that black people are under-represented in pop culture. And that contention is quantifiable. In terms of 'presence in numbers'....black americans are represented in tv/films and music more than fairly based on population demographics. In popular American music....black people are heavily OVER-represented. Latinos are the demographic that is severely underrepresented in popular culture as a whole.

The goal-posts usually change when that's pointed out to people who use analogies like the napkin. 'We're not talking about actual numbers....we're talking about the nature of their representation'. That's a much more legitimate point in my mind. There's plenty of black faces in tv and movies but not enough black writers, directors and producers. So even though the numbers are proportionately representative in terms of 'presence'.....it's the WAY that black people are represented that should be the point of contention....not simply the amount of black faces. Making that distinction will make these arguments much stronger. Cause frankly....it's pretty clear that more than 12% of American music stars and tv/film stars are black. That napkin analogy is much more appropriate for the Latino population in the States.

In any case....I can't help but think he's fooling himself for not seeing a homophobic agenda in the contention that he's defending. It wouldn't be THAT difficult to come up with a percentage of black celebrities who are gay or who play gay characters in relation to hetero black actors/characters. It would surprise me if that ratio were much different than it is for white celebrities. I've read enough 'the media is trying to make black men effeminate' conspiracy theories on OKP to see that there is a homophobic agenda driving it.

On another note....I thought it was really interesting what he had to say about his privilege in side-stepping certain racial prejudices in being effeminate. People don't like copping to privileges....so when they do....I tend to listen. And what he's saying about that makes sense within parameters. In a way....I think it's honourable of him to acknowledge that because he's illuminating someone else's struggle. He's saying that masculine black men have it worse than him in certain contexts and situations.....and that at least shows a willingness to empathize with and shine a light on someone else's struggle.
