If you think 4chan has anything to do with the birth of internet trolling, then you really haven't been on the internet very long.

When PC's shipped with Win95 and the price of 14.4k access was $30 a month with your local ISP, that's when shit really changed.

Smartphones just made it so you could have internet access in your pocket.

... and I'm not talking about iPhones or Android shits either. Palm, Windows PPC/Windows Mobile, and Blackberry based phones have been serving up mobile web access since at least 2002.

the nail in the coffin for myspace was that update in 2009/2010 that made it unusable. People were complaining about waiting for upwards of 2 minutes just to log in and see your home page even on powerful cutting edge PC's on the fastest connections available at the time.

flame wars and anything else you can think of on the bulletin boards, email discussion services, etc. Maybe it was 'smarter' then in the sense that a lot of the conversation came from colleges, but it was just as dumb.

The only way around it was moderating the hell out of it.

I started in on a few email listservs or whatever they were called around 1991 and that kind of culture was already part of the scene.

slightly dumber at aol

napster brought the second wave of dummies

hood dummies came for Black Planned

a new wave of dummies logged on for myspace

streaming video/porn dummed it down more

cheap smart-phones broke down the last wall. You got dummies who don't know how to log into their own email from anything other than their phone's mail app using social media every day.

Not to mention the fact that dummies under the age of 25 grew up online.

I distinctly remember the first girl I met IRL off AOL. We both quickly agreed to say we had met at some party if asked.

Nowadays if you're in the game and not doing numbers off IG/Twitter/POF you're lame.

the wedding wasn't the first time we'd been out, but it was the first time we'd been in a setting where a ton of people had known her her whole life. Lying about how we met was a lot more difficult that weekend.

The bigger and more prevalent porn became online... well, you know.

We could always go back to the way it was, but we'd have to get rid of the porn. Are we ready to make that sacrifice?

Prodigy was the first social network I belonged to. You could play games online (one of the first companies to offer online game play) like Red Baron. There was also a "community" filled with all the stuff you would find online today. People hooking up with each other, beefing, talking about each other, and of course positive stuff like talking about code, hacking, getting the most bang out of your 2400 baud modem. This was around 1991
