"getting a divorce when you're broke"

has anybody done this?
long story short the FOMC is being a jerk
doesn't want to be with me but doesn't want to get the ball rolling on a divorce
even though he's the one who told ME he wanted one
(dick head right? yeah)
so yea. anybody ever have to do this? know anyone who has done this?
i welcome any and all information that will help.
i have a job right now but it really just pays small bills and buys necessities right now
still looking for something that can actually sustain me and allow me to move out
of my dad's crib

*SIGH*
i'm probably gonna edit this...

Eventually, she spent I think $600 to get the marriage cancelled or whatever it's called. This was in PA tho.

Whatever she did, it didn't involve the courts, just paperwork. Maybe something similar to this (uncontested divorce, link for NY state):

the reason i don't want to try an uncontested divorce is he's already contesting me
if i have abandonment as the reason it might be easier for me to get it done with

Cheaper than a lawyer

It may not be easy because yall have a child though

There are kits at the office supply store. Maybe that will help

My bff did this but there were no children and no property.

Good luck sis.

Found the paperwork for our state online, worked through it all ourselves and filed. No fights over assets or anything, so no need for representation.

Not sure how helpful that info is for your situation since you have a kid to consider.

the only asset was our house. My dad was fine with my mom having it since we would live with her. They agreed on joint custody and visitation. My mom could have really done my dad dirty since he did cheat on her. But she said him not staying faithful has nothing to do with how good of a father he was. So they stayed cordial for us. But it really can only happen like that if both parties are willing to stay cordial. That is so rare.

but she didn't block the process once i got it started.

without a person contesting it, it's a matter of Googling and downloading the forms and paying the filing fees at the court.

We are not fighting over anything. No kids, no property, no alimony etc...

You have a kid together so you probably should get the child support and visitation out of the way before the divorce via the courts. Which should be free.

Call your local courthouse and ask how much for No Contest divorce. No lawyer is needed if you have the child support and visitation already established.

If you feel you can not afford an attorney.
Call that number and ask them for the equivalent for NYC.

My first wife used them and paid nothing for our divorce.
I paid almost 3K...

Here is a quick some info on collaborative divorce. Do some more digging, especially in your area.

"One of the big draws of a collaborative divorce is that it can save consumers money. Reliable statistics on the cost of an average divorce are hard to come by, but the general consensus is that an average divorce costs between $15,000 and $30,000. But if you opt for the mediation route – at least at Wevorce – the average price point is about $7,500, Crosby says."

It can cost as little as $50 to get married at a courhouse but it's an average of 15K to get divorced. smh

The cheapest way is to go to the Dissolution office at your county court house and ask them for a divorce packet...it will contain a template and instructions for all the things you need, plus the timing of when you have to file them.

then you prepare the initial docs and file them yourself at the court house. In NJ, it was $250, so i don't know how much it would cost in whatever state you are in

If you don't feel confident typing up and preparing all the docs yourself, you could use completecase.com and pay $299. I used them and they were fantastic. they ask you a series of questions then put all your answers into correctly formatted legal docs that you just download and print

whichever way you go, make sure you follow all instructions TO THE LETTER including how many copies to make and when to file and counting days in between steps

in some states, he won't even need to sign in order for you get the divorce..you will just have to prove that he was served and if he doesn't respond in a certain amount of days, you receive a default judgement.

any other questions, you can inbox me and i'd be glad to help.

d

unfortunately i have no advice except for

GET IT DONE

in case you do land on your feet

lemme put it this way

mom landed a job that gave a pension

she retired a few years ago and realized she was still married to her first husband in colombia
i was like psssshhht he dead

she's like NOPE
he could seize half my pension

i'm like !!!!!!!!!!!!

oddly she went to PA for her divorce as well

so my little bit of get up and go for doing it
if he's pulling these type of shenanigans
i don't want to see what he could pull when y'all retired
and you got a little bit of something for yourself
