"OKCreatives: Ever make a work that made someone upset?"
So I have been on a bit of a writing streak lately and as a general matter I think my best material comes from real life inspiration. I take stories that happen to me or friends, add a lot of dramatic flair and hopefully come up with something new and interesting.
It's created tension with my SO when I've written stories about old girlfriends and it actually got me into a lot of trouble once because a friend started beefing with me because he said the story I used for a short film to much resembled his relationship and cause static with him and his ex-girl. We've actually have'nt been the same since.
I've been weary of doing stuff like that since but I just heard a story from a friend that is sooo perfect for a creative work that I feel compelled to use it. I am pretty sure if my friend saw it probably would damage our friendship and might do some harm to his marriage.
I feel like if I were a committed artist I would say f the friendship and create the work.
Anyway, anyone else ever been in a position like this?

like the film is out already with his real name in it?

I've never had anyone get upset at anything I've created, other than my jokes which can run a little dark sometimes. I'm not a comedian tho, so it's not a big thing.

Because you can have characters and stories inspired by real people and events, but a writer will add their own twist and creative elements to make it their own work.
So I could have a character based off you and your girl, but if the character based on me ends up f'ing your girl that doesn't really mean anything (and certainly doesn't mean I f'd your girl). It just means that is what the story dictated.

while we were still together. she was a bit upset but she got over it...after we broke up
you'll never be a great writer if you have to keep stopping to censor yourself in case somebody sees a bit of themselves in it and gets their panties in a bunch
it should be common sense by now if you hang with a writer/artist, you might find a piece of you or your life in their work where do they think we get the good stuff from?
your mistake is sharing it with them in advance when the time comes, just send 'em in an invite to sundance
p.s. come to think of it. when i used to write more, i had some unflattering stuff about my family in there. they were a bit amused or mildly irritated but never requested that i pull it. maybe because it was clear within that work that there was alot of love there. so i would say just shoot for a "fair and balanced" portrayal. if a friend genuinely has no redeeming features...well you shouldn't be hanging out with straight up villains anyway.

We were studying the human form with gesture drawings in studio. I drew her sitting in a puddle of water naked, diving into a swimming pool, etc. I was fully intending of submitting them as I thought they were excellent.
She was livid. Had me tear those shits out and tear them up immediately.
