between houston and dallas. a random lady, that just
returned from that area, said that jobs are plentiful
down there. i would like to know the answer to this
too.

just did a quick zillow search and in some areas, it
seems expensive. not sure about overall.

Rents are going up, real estate is going up but not as fast. You can get a LOT of house close to the city.
Roads are trash and you're gonna put a lot of miles on your car getting around.
Goods & gas are around the national average, sometimes higher, sometimes lower.
It rains enough to make car washing semi pointless.
You'll have to use your ac about ten months out of the year.
There's no income tax and very few zoning laws, which makes neighborhoods... interesting.

Work and family reasons.

I've been looking in the Southwest Meyerland/Braeswood area for the most part. Seems $500k is what is going to take to get a nice 4/3.

Asking so you can keep in mind traffic patterns. With the loops there are situations where an accident at say 59 & 10 can affect traffic on 45 & 8 as an example.

But those types of situations are what I dread the most. I've nailed all this stuff down in ATL over the past 13 years and now have to figure it all out again.

I couldn't fathom walking much of anywhere in Houston. Between the drivers, distance, and heat.

Nah. And I road bicycles everywhere down there. If I didn't ride I drove. I once pitched to my lady at the time that we should take a bus ms she looked at me like I had eaten dog feces.

Dallas has abt the same amount Houston (but Dallas' walkable neighbor-
hoods are more affordable) and Austin has more than both.

i'm not sure that's even that "walkable" (think busy street and strip malls) but at least it's possible to get to several things via pavement

there other areas near the galleria and the medical section that's walkable but i don't know the hood names

River Oaks. He's black and not rich/wealthy; would get stopped.

Downtown. It shuts down at night and on the weekends plus nobody lives there. The closest you'd live is midtown and that's at least a .8 mile walk to downtown.

Westheimer isn't walkable. It's barely driveable.

Montrose and Rice/Museum District -- that's it

stop trying create scenarios to support your argument
houston is not a walkable city really. i just named like areas that make up like 5% of it where you *could* walk to stuff. yall trying take it down to 0% lol
btw you could walk from midtown to downtown quickly but admittedly have to walk under a highway bridge

Walkable neighborhoods vs walkabikity to things though.
We live in Silver Spring now, it's walkable as hell. There's stuff within walking distance and groceries. When I lived next to Howard though, I could walk to things, but it really wasn't walkable.

Why you got plex?

In response to Reply # 19

>who said anything about the galleria?
>there are residential areas like 2 blocks from the apple
>store

you not living behind that apple store unless you worth a few million
how many of them ppl that live north of that apple store between Westheimer and San Felipe are walking to Crave to buy a $4 cupcake?
ZERO!
that's like someone inside Beverly Hills walking down to Doheny to grab a gelato.
NOT HAPPENING
them folks are WEALTHY that live over there

>btw you could walk from midtown to downtown quickly but
>admittedly have to walk under a highway bridge

you would'nt even walk form The Derek to Neiman Marcus or hell even JAMBA JUICE in May, June, July or August
if you knew houston you'd know how short that walk is
LOL
for the NYC heads it's like walking from The Apollo to Magic Johnson Starbucks
not even that far really

you're skin will BURN in that short of a distance

i dont think you spent more than a couple weekends here, dude
that lil 3 block stretch you mention has a sidewalk but is not "walkable"
you got a Cole Haan, J Crew, Apple Store, Crave cupcakes, J Crew and a Central Market (Texas's local version of whole foods) in that stretch
you not walking between them stores WITH BAGS trying to shop
especially in no got dammned HEAT
ya drawls be drenched in sweat by the time you walk out of Central Market and before you get to the sidewalk

aint shit downtown to walk to
no one lives there!
i dont even think they have a grocery store downtown
they got that Fiesta over on 59/Main
but it's janky as shit

every hoood you named that's "walkable" you going to spend at least $500k on a house
that's not a lot in NYC
but in houston suburbs you're getting 3,000 sq ft in a BRAND NEW subdivision for $200k with GREAT schools and low crime

There were some changes, but it was the same old Houston. Midtown crowd was Midtown again as opposed to Washinton Avenue.

Same potholes, construction on Westheimer, downtown was ghost. Sundance theater replaced the Angelikan theater. They're working on an east west expansion to the rail line.

East of downtown has spots here and here but always had.

The only real notable thing for me was that the homeless population downtown seems to have sky rocketed. There were a LOT more homeless than I can ever recall seeing.

It was five thirty pm on I-10 near 59 allot a sudden I hear a horn honking and people yelling. I look up in my rear view and don't see anything. Look left and there's a white pick up truck about to push into me, with three skin heads shouting nigger. Traffic ahead moves a step and I let them get in front of me.

And that was it. I looked left and looked right and everyone in the other cars seemed to just be going on. And even the crazies now in front of me just went about their business. I went back to my radio and was home within 15 minutes.

i had no problem w/it.

i've seen horizontal traffic signals in Florida and assumed they were placed that way due to the frequency of hurricane-force winds.

maybe that's why they're horizontal in Houston. but i see the signals in Austin are also horizontal and Austin doesn't experience hurricane-force winds often. it can't be about tornadoes b/c we have those here and the signals are hung vertically.

They're expanding the rail. I don't have any answers about potholes. But they've done a solid job of "redeveloping" downtown. Where most places suffer from gentrification, Houston never really had s downtown to begin with. In the past decade or so they've brought in a basketball stadium, professional soccer stadium, a green park, a entertainment center, and many hotels into the downtown area.

But that's not to say things are all roses. People are being displaced. Jobs are still really tied to oil. Texas is still an at will state. And the governors are still turning down Medicaid and Medicare expansion. So while Houston has one of the largest medical centers in the country, the people that could use that proximity the most continue to suffer.

FL outside of MIA/Ft Lauderdale and Orlando: deep bleeding red

at least you get a rail expansion. We voted for a 1/2 penny tax increase 10 years ago to expand ours and cocksuckers on county commission diverted the money to maintenance of existing fleet. So we'll just continue to die in traffic and get tolled to death daily.

Like I felt comparable places in Chicago would cost less than what I paid for things in Houston.

It's also so dambed sprawling. Even without traffic it felt like shit took forever to get to.

I'd say the best thing they've got going is the real estate. You definitely get a lot for your money. Even if just renting. My homie's apartment complex had hella amenities for the price.

I enjoyed Montrose, and driving around Rice U and River Oaks was pretty, but the rest of the city did little for me. Like if I didn't have friends there, I doubt I'd have any real desire/impetus to visit it again.

That's how I felt my last time in LA, it was just being in the car so much, cities that don't have much public transit should have more compact/dense/adjacent areas at the very least

Woodlands to Medical Center is like 35 miles each way depending upon what part of the woodlands you live in

I know ppl who commute from Sugarland and even Katy (Cinco Ranch) to Anadarko every day.

I had to drop my car off at the shop off Fondren/Orem then pick it up same day but also go to my cousin's house in Atascocita that's 100 miles EASY from Midtown

In response to Reply # 0

niggas thinking you coming down and buying a 3,000 sq ft pad inside the loop for $200k
aint happening!
you're looking at $300 per sq ft for something in a trendy enclave
yes, that's cheaper than NYC, SFO, LA, San Diego up to $1,000 sq ft pads
but that shit aint CHEAP
everything else here cost just as much as it do anywhere else
except plane tickets
NYC, LA and SFO has cheaper flights to any "fun" international place you want to go
United has a stranglehold on any flights out of IAH

if you want your kids to go to a good public school
expect to pay $500k minimum or stay waaaay out in the suburbs of Katy, Eagle Springs/Kingwood or some shit like that
Takes you an hour to get to Toyota Center from those type places

your electric bill will suck up A LOT of the savings you will have from moving down here tho

we run A/C 9 months out the year here
it gets HOTTT here

eating out at restaurants???
for the quality, NYC is cheaper
even if you go to a bbq shack, expect to spend $30 on take out for two ppl
go to Gatlins and get two 3-meat plates
That's $15 each not including drinks!
hell, a bbq sandwich and drink sets you back $11/$12 each
no dollar slices out here!

gas is cheaper here tho
i was paying like $1.70 for a couple months
that felt GOOOOOD
now it's like $2.15
