my grandma passed in 1992. She was living in Mexico at the time. In Mexico you don't get days to arrange the funeral. They dont embalm the dead so the services are usually the next day or 2 days after. So my uncle took care of her funeral arrangements. But she didn't want to be buried. She wanted to be cremated. My mom was the only one that knew that and by the time she got there it was to late and everything was set, in motion, and paid for. They talked and my uncle said they can exhume her body in 10 years and cremate whats left of her remains to respect her wishes. Why 10 years? Because the burial plots where they buried her are rented to you for 10 years at a time. Usually after 10 years if the family wants to rent it for another 10 they can. If not the cemetery will exhume the remains and resell the land. Well 10 years passes and my mom didnt have the money to do what she wanted. So they reupped for another 10. She has been renting it yearly until she could afford to make the trip and pay for cremation.
Tomorrow she will be going to the cemetery where they will exhume my grandmas remains. But that is all they do. My mom has to have her body transported to get cremated. Then she has to physically put her mothers remains on the table or whatever they put into the oven then push the remains in. Then gather the ashes and put them in an urn herself. She bought rubber gloves and an apron and mask for the dirty work.
Honestly I think this is both one of the most insane things and greatest things ever. The fact that she is willing to put herself through that shit just to honor her moms wishes is pretty amazing. I told her I wouldnt be able to go that extra mile. I dont think I would be able to handle it emotionally. She said she was there to help her mom do it to her grandpa when she was 12. So this is the 2nd decomposed body she will be handling in her life. CRAZY!

she just knew no one could afford the rental costs grandma knew too but mom wasn't there for it came back she it was time and had her cremated

one of the links I found was a story from Spain dated 2012 or so.....they mentioned this same rental system, alluded to eviction, but they also didn't really say what happened to the evicted either....
It does seem like cremation would be kinda counter...but I guess they'd do mass cremation in a not so respectable fashion?

like she has been talking about this trip for a month. I found out about the handling her moms remains and cremating part last night when I called her to wish her a good trip. I was like have fun. Then she said oh I will on Wednesday first I gotta cremate my mom. Then I asked questions and she laughed at me a lot.
