"Who basically would not have/ had a career if Biggie & Pac were still he..."

Now I definitely think Eminem would've had a career but I'm not TOO sure if 50 cent could have survived or would've been as big as he became if Tupac and the Outlaws were still in the game. Like there wouldn't have even been a need for that sort of intimidation. Ja Rule wouldn't have existed for 50 cent to punk.

I mean I just wonder what the state of hip hop would be had our greats not fallen so early in the game?

Would they have pushed the industry to do better or would it still be the same?

I could totally still see Tupac or Biggie doing some records with southern artist like OutKast, Ludacris, or T.I but I don't believe we wouldn't have gotten to that T-pain/ Lil Jon phase...

Who do you think would've had a greater impact had they not died? Biggie or Pac?

I think hip hop would be similar to what it is now with Biggie still around. Pac I feel like would've intimidated a lot of these "so-called" rappers that are out now.

I don't believe Biggie would've fallen off though. I definitely would have seen him more like how Jay-z is now. Not so business savvy but kind of falling back and doing a verse here and there.

Like, you could go back in time, make him miss the flight to Las Vegas altogether, but he'd still die on the same day in a different way.

lived?
especially biggie
if that third album is ANY indication into the direction he was going then i agree that he would have fallen off before the early 2000s and probably had limited impact on some one like 50 cent getting big

and i think tupac would have eventually moved on to full time acting

I feel like if he were still here there would be more lyricist and people after his title therefore stepping up their game.

I feel like after they died, it was like competition over and then Jay-z kind of just swept in and dominated the industry kind of like Mayweather. He had no REAL competition besides Nas, but Nas had no crew.

because that was just Puffy corpse-raping and displaying the fact that Big really didn't record very often.

If BIG had lived, you can probably feel safe knowing he wasn't planning on looping a Duran Duran lyric with his name in it for his next big single.

Those were mostly verses that never left the cutting room floor paired up with new beats that fit like a quadruple XL avirex jacket.

Biggie had nothing to do with that.
The fact that the gutter joints on his double album were still very popular means Biggie would have never gone 100% Shiny.

from old features, b-sides, etc.

Big wasn't Pac.

He didn't stay up in the studio, he was in there only when he had to be and almost anything he cut got used for something.

Plus he was only 24 years old and this wasn't a time where people were recording outside of the major studios like Wayne having a van around him recording every fart & cough.

Big missed a good amount of recording time in between tours, promotion, being laid up from the car accident and all the extracurricular shit that went with being a rap star.

BIG hadn't begun even thinking about his third album, he was celebrating finally finishing the second one which was about to be released shortly after that tragedy occurred on Wilshire Boulevard.

he actually had the original idea to make the Black album which Jay completely butchered. His idea was to make an album with no cover, no singles...nothing...just drop it with some dope music and call it the Black Album. His plan was to retire as an artist from that. No clue if he Woulda followed thru on retirement but that gives you an idea where his head was in terms of playing the game.

There would be no Wayne and if Drake did still come on the scene he would have copied Pacs style. No 50 or at best a less relevant 50. Lac would probably have left hip hop as a result of how commercial it became. Biggie would be doing what Jay is doing in some way shape or form probably.

he'd have fallen completely into acting and wouldn't be interested in rap.

Biggie would also be a has-been to the youth. the over 30 crowd would pay to see him still. he'd be on tour w/acts like New Edition and SWV, Salt N Pepa, and all of them. he might be the headliner but that's what he'd be doing.

fuck you.

on one hand, i get the logic. it seems like in entertainment, there can only be one person at a time. or a couple. the public can't give its attention to too many people at one time.

so Biggie got killed and that opened up a lane. the lane that Jay rode to stardom.

BUT

you can't deny Jay's work ethic. you can't say that with the way that man grinds, he wouldnt have been successful. beside the fact that alot of top people in hip hop with a good ear knew Jay was the truth when Reasonable Doubt dropped. just like Illmatic put people on notice about the new kid Nas, RD did that for Jay.

like 'Big Pimpin' and some others.

but then Jay might've gotten some beats others used. so i dunno.

still i agree that there's room for both - Jay could still have sold as many records w/Biggie still alive.

fuck you.

over-rated/glorified/blown etc. i'm not saying they wouldn't continue to have or would have had an impact, but i don't think it was or would have been as impactful on the direction of Hip Hop as this post kind of suggests.

you said since our greats fell at an early age, like there aren't other greats in Hip Hop and they were/are the only 2.

IMO BIG was bigger than both because he had songs for the ladies...

when you have songs for the ladies your audience is more forgiving and gives you more wiggle room.

Wu was a group and 75% of their fans were dudes.

Nas coulda been so much more but he was fine being in his lane.

Plus he was older and more mature embued with more life experience by the time he came on the scene than BIG would ever live to be.

It'd be silly to pretend that Jay didn't posses a degree of calculation to his thing that we never saw BIG display, you can take that for better or worse but it is what it is.

Yeah i think so too.

I think Big had a few more really great records in him. I think eventually his material would become less and less interesting. And eventually he'd go into the business stuff, dropping albums every couple of years on the Magna Carta/Kingdom Come level of quality.

I feel like Pac's output music-wise would start to drastically decline after Makaveli. How the hell would you follow up an album like that? I think he would've gone hard into acting, and released a new album every 5-6 years that would be good, not great.

Compared to Pac who lived in the studio, it ain't hard to tell (c) that Big would have fallen off, as the south took over with the grind/hustle mentality in the studio.

folks don't wanna hear that the game was top tier when those cats were around and since they been gone you have had cats who have had runs
and done some things, however when those cats were going the competition was deep because you had ice cube, snoop, nas, in the mix. game was lethal back then.

its been soft since to me. some good acts however everybody knows the real last days of hip hop died back then in alot of ways.

And he raaaaan with it.

I don't see Biggie staying sharp past his fourth album though
The decadance of his lifestyle would dull his hunger alll the way down
And NY rappers would have started nipping at his heels,
They were already starting to throw shots.

He would still have a Snoop like career if he was willing to shed some weight and hit the concert circus.

smh.

Say what you want about Jay, he put out some fantastic material that Biggie and Pac would have paid respect to.

....

What happens to Big's career when he realizes the ramifications of selling his publishing for $2 million? Life After Death does not sell 15 million copies if Big survives. Nas ethers Big before Jay gets to him if the sublims continue. Ghost and Rae have a conversation with Big as well as the legacy is tarnished even more. IF Puff allows Big to leave Bad Boy then the Lox don't go to Ruff Ryders because Puff keeps them. Everything else goes according to hip-hop history because Big falls off sooner rather than later. He's not remembered as the a great because fans have time to digest his material. If we're being honest part of Big's legacy is his early death. Give fans time to pick apart later material and we find out he's no Hov as far as historical output. Allegedly, Big was lazy so there's no way he's as popular as any of his contemporaries in 2015.

The what if scenario with Pac needs clarification. Does Suge Knight die in the shooting instead of Pac? This scenario assumes both Suge and Pac survive. Suge keeps bullying Pac to the point that Pac seeks an alliance with another label like Rap-A-Lot. Pac is a legend but more of an independent artist.

If Suge dies and Pac survives then the scenario is different. The west is more prominent as a result of Pac working with the youth at the time. Crooked I actually gets the look he deserved at the time. I see Pac as more of cultural figure in hip-hop. Imagine Common speaking like an eloquent black man that understands his history speaks like someone with some knowledge of self.

This idea that DMX, Drake, or Jay don't have careers or aren't as relevant is a joke because both Big and Pac peaked around the time of their death. Pac can't top the 7 Day Theory. Big can't top Life After Death. Both artists are legends but hip-hop fans are fickle and turn on both at some point after 1998.

But as far as Big being lazy? Ionno, I dont think quantity trumps quality.

I think both these artist would continue to push each other. Pac would definitely have more songs but I think Big would have more crossover his and rule every other summer when his album dropped.

Pac would definitely be the West Coast ambassador but the problem with Pac is how easy he was influenced.

I could see them squashing beef years later and putting out an album that didnt live up to the hype for obvious reasons

I don't think Big opened a lane for Jay like ya'll think.

Reasonable Doubt was already done.. and most of the songs on In My Lifetime Vol. 1 dont really compete with BIG's lane at all...

If anything Jay might've been "less" big willie and even though Big could do the double time stuff that was Jay's true calling. So most of those timbo records would've still gone to him..

imo Big being alive directly affects the bad boy roster.. Mase, G Dep, Black Rob & especially Puff (as artist).

Jay might be more versatile... could BIg have been able to survive the keyboard beat era like Jay did? The rise of the south?
