"Poll question: My ex asked me to borrow $40. Weird or nah?"
Sun Mar-22-15 11:50 AM by lightworks

This is the text convo we had on Friday. For the record he works in downtown DC and lives in a Baltimore suburb.

For the record I had the money to loan but the whole approach was weird.

Him: Can I ask you for a favor? I forgot my wallet at home and I needed some cash. I'll pay you back
Me: When would you need the cash? And how much?
Him: $40 and whenever your free. I can't take the metro but I can meet you at any of the stops close to me
Me: Oh. I don't have $40 to loan.
Him: What about $25 I'll pay you back Monday
Me: Don't have that either sorry
Me: How did you get here to DC without a wallet?
Him: I drove. So you don't have anything to loan? So why did you ask when did I need it/ how much?
Me: I thought it was more like $5.

Then we dropped it. Then an hour later he was like:

What bank are you with?
Me: PNC why?
Him: Just asking
Me: Why?
Him: Because I am
Me: Hmmm. You're acting strange.
Him: No I'm not. Stop it.

Plus we don't work near each other other (I mean we both work in DC but still)...

If it was an emergency and he was short a check or something I get that.

But randomly asking to hold $40 when his wallet is just simply at home?

Seems so suspect.

don't know the dynamics between the two of you but,
i would find it weird/off-putting if my ex called and asked me
that due to the nature of our estranged relationship.

Baltimore isn't that far away.

I figured if he needed $10 for lunch or something that make sense.

$40? What you want me to fund going out with your boys Friday or something? Nah let them handle that.

i forgor my wallet. who can I borrow money from that knows I'm good to pay it back?

it definitely sounds like he had a friday night outing but its not weird IMO to ask instead of fighting rush hour.

I'm sure he survived.

Even with that though... if you trust he'd pay it back Monday like he said, don't matter what he needed the money for really or how weird it is.

But it seems weird to go to an ex eel if yall hadn't talked in a while. He don't have a co-worker he can reach out to for gas money until Monday? And $40 seems a bit excessive. He could get to Baltimore on $10 of gas unless he drives a suburban or something. $40 seems like him asking for happy hour money not gas money.

And I can see him asking about your bank to transfer money but how does that help if he doesn't have his wallet? He wouldn't have his ATM card or ID to access it.

But even after texting once a week I find the request odd.

for instance wells fargo has friend to friend transfer
so if he needed cash but didn't have his bank card but access to his account online he may have been setting up for him to transfer the dough to her and then she withdrawal the cash and give to him

it's doing something arduous and
creating something of value and then

It's not randoms asking to borrow money that cause problems.... They either pay it back or they don't and you don't hear from them for a long time. Then you don't feel bad for turning them down next time.

It's close folks borrowing money that cause bigger issues.

The best rule is don't lend money if you don't have to.... it can lead to expectations and problems. I only lend money if I don't want it back and I'm not going to be annoyed if they ask to borrow more money down the line. Emergencies can be an exception but it has to be a worthy emergency.
You see how quickly he went from needing 40 to 25 to inquiring about her bank? Prime example. Can you see how that person has some expectations that might lead to problems down the road concerning money.

Even if he wanted to do a transfer from his account to hers that's a lot to ask of someone that just told you they wouldn't lend you money twice.

But if someone told me no twice over small sums of money, I'm not asking about their bank info to do a transfer, unless I know the only reason they wouldn't lend me money is because they don't have it in the first place.

he is thinking she doesnt have it so his next option is to see if they belong to the same bank so he can transfer HIS money into hers and she could pull it out for him.

that isnt crazy or outlandish.

it only sounds weird because he didnt go into detail about why he asked about her bank.

she told him she thought he needed $5 so it comes off like she doesnt have $40 to loan.

there's nothing in that entire conversation that says, no

maybe the real issue here is that he shouldve known better than to ask

all she said was how much and when he asked, she said ain't got it. if all she had was 5 or $10 to spare, she could have said that off the break. ain't no one texting anyone for $5 unless it's my coworker down in her office. for all we know, he could have an important lunch meeting and that's why he asked and he probably went high because $25 was what he really needed.

I don't think this is odd, they are friends.

if she don't fuck with him like that, why is she still talking to him once a week.

you should be comfortable enough to explain what it's for.
I wouldn't ask someone to borrow money & for bank info then come off like "don't worry about what it's for."
That's weird.
Seems like a lack of communication all the way around though

I guess it depends if I still have feelings or felt used by the Ex.

I'm cool with most of my Ex's tho...

and she made it seem like they were cool since they still text once a week.

then again, people on OKP have different definitions for Ex's.

He's never asked to borrow money but I have definitely been in situations with him where after I felt used.

Not gonna lie that might have played into this re me not wanting to give the $ unless it was an emergency.

If I had to do this over again I woulda asked if it was an emergency and if not I coopent swing it.

Then again he's manipulative enough that I could see him saying it was an emergency just to get the $.

100% right.

This shit was the straw that broke the camels back but I shoulda been stopped talkig to him.

I mean the texts were very generic (How's your week been, what's new) but that's time and energy that could be spent on people that deserve it.

And you need lunch money or train or cab fare that dollar amount is relatively low.

That's what I meant by $5.

Maybe it wasn't literally $5 but train fare and $ to eat is like $15 tops.

That I woulda given him if to was between being stranded in DC or giving him $.

$40 to me seemed very "I have a date tonight" or as someone said needed $ till direct deposit hit

I'm not funding the former and if it was the latter he should have said that rather than being vague.

Frontin someone $15 when they will be reunited with their wallet later that night makes sense to me

If he's lying because he has a happy hour with the boys or a date or needs to stretch his $ until Monday that's a whole other story and isn't in like with what he told me which is just that his wallet is at home...

I've "loaned" God knows how much throughout the years and only got back like 20% of it. It is what it is. I learned early to never expect to get money back and don't "loan" if I actually need that money.

you might like the attention of exchanging texts
but pretty much anyone I liked as a person could borrow $40 for a few days assuming they had a job and lived pretty responsibly (i.e. no crack habit and they dont take out payday loans)

it got weird when he asked about your bank information, but you pretty much said no to spite him.

any ex I was on decent terms with could borrow $40 though

40 dollar is an amount of money

and at the same time

its just 40 dollars you feel me?

most of the people in this thread would drink 40 dollars in one sitting easily

so I dont understand how its suddenly a lot of money to folks

40 dollars is going out for lunch almost everyday at work

real story: he really needs a payday loan to get him over until that direct deposit hits.

Trying to go to lunch, get some gas, but can't. Prolly about to overdraft his account instead, and face them charges. Was trying see if he could avoid it with a favor, I'm figuring.

But of course, aint nobody gonna say all that, so it's "I left my wallet......".

The simple truth is niggas is broke these days.

during rush hour, an average trip from DC to Baltimore can be at minimum 1 hour. to go home and get his wallet will take him 2 hours on top of the hour he already spent. he may as well take off for the day and just stay home.

OR stay at work and borrow what money he needed.

now if he had no gas, and went to get some and realized he left his wallet at home, then he's really screwed...which could be why he asked for $40. $30 for his gas tank and $10 for lunch.

What does dude need $40 for? Gas? If so, he really drove ~45 miles on E? On a Monday? At no point during his ride did he notice that the thing that he must have every time he drives (his wallet with license, ATM card and presumably insurance and registration info) was missing? At no point did he think "gotta grab some gas, will use my card... oh wait!" He can't scrape up enough change for gas out of his car?

If not for gas, then for what? Lunch? A grown man can't go one day without lunch?

And all of this was serious enough to NAG his EX-gf for money? lol

Yeah, I'm mean. But then again, I've always managed to find my way out of situations like this WITHOUT nagging ex-girlfriends for money so...

be like FOH if you consider this person to be YOUR FRIEND. that's what she said, yeah we talk once a week or so...this is a person she has constant contact with, that obviously felt comfortable enough with her to ask can he hold some money. She already said he never asked for money before...so obviously he must need it and thought since they still talk, and she is CLOSE (location wise) to him, then let me ask her.

I don't think he nagged her. He asked her once, she said "i don't have $40." so he lowered. she said no so some time later he was like "what bank do you have" because he was probably gonna ask to transfer the money to her and withdraw it (you can do that on the app). Either way i saw it as harmless. Y'all out here disliking your exes and that's why y'all are like FUCK NO.

but this is Mica's MO. She likes to dramatize the most random innocent events and everyone falls for it. every post of hers is "is this strange, how do i look, what would y'all do..." and we always in here arguing over dumb shit.

I'm wholly confused by all the consternation and hand-wringing over $40. If I had left my wallet at home, asking for $40 seems like a reasonable ask -- maybe breakfast, lunch, gas/metro fare/whatever to get home...

someone other than a partner or parent.

co-workers kill me specifically, it's like - 'dog, we're at work!' how you bumming from me when we both are at the job, right now!'

i gave him so much shit about that. still gave him the money, though.

i don't like irresponsible people that use asking for money as a crutch or band-aid.

and it's also, why you think i got extra money?!?!

if you're broke, imagine that i am, too.

Type of people that get paid on Friday and come in broke on Monday, hitting you up for lunch money.

This one alcoholic had it down to a science. He'd ask you to transfer it thru Square then he would transfer it back when he got paid. That enabling technology. At least he paid it back.

I'll let anyone borrow money if I trust that they'll pay it back. Ex or not. The only reasons my exes are exes is because we weren't marriage material...doesn't make them pieces of shit.

And was like "Oh. You wanted my bank info so you could transfer that into my account. I wish you would have said that instead of being vague".

Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything since I didn't help it in the end and I assume we had different banks but I am still put off but how he never said why he was asking and if it wasn't for yall I never woulda realized the bank transfer thing.

Anyways his response was "Do you want to upset me?"

friend asking for a loaner of $40 = not particularly weird but

-his excuse is he left his wallet, but
-he drove to work.

Why can't he just drive home and get his wallet?

He can't take the metro, but can meet you at the stops near him? WTF? So he wants you not just to loan him money, but to put in work to get it to him? WHEN HE HAS A CAR WITH HIM? He can't drive it to where you are to pick up the money?

I have a friend that this sounds a lot like. As much as I like the guy, he's shallow, blatantly self-serving, has a bad sense of entitlement, and reacts very negatively when he doesn't get what he wants (when he never has done anything to deserve what he wants.)

I feel like he would have said that first if that was the case.

"my wallet is at home AND I'm almost out of gas" is a way better sale than "my wallet is at home"

And if he truly was almost out of gas borrowing from a coworker makes way more sense than asking someone in a totally different quadrant.

the delivery made. "I left my wallet at home" by itself is not a valid reason. "I left my wallet at home and need to fill up the tank in order to make it back" is a valid reason. But even there, borrowing that money from someone who is 6 stops and a transfer away instead of his coworkers is weird... unless, yes, it was a date, and with a coworker.

If he had been willing to make the trip, no valid reason necessary. "I'll swing by your office - can you meet me out front?" no problem.

Only thing I can think is he had a good parking spot and disn't want to lose it driving to me..

What got me is we work 6 metro stops away from each other but you have to switch lines

That's a lot of work for someone who yes could easily drive

Probably would have been better for him to say "I'll drive to you after work and meet you wherever you are if you can loan it to me".

But the idea of me having to come to him is a bit odd.

with no expectation of being paid back. I'm not friends with any of my exes so IDK how that works.

ON THE FLIP SIDE!!
My car got towed because I had several tickets on it (being stupid) and I asked my ex for $800 to get my car and pay off my tickets. And he gave it to me. No, I never paid him back. So there is that. But he was still cool with my mom, and I knew he had it.

I understand when you lend a friend money, you should expect to not get it back.
Basically, don't let money come between friendship.

But as the receiver, how do you not feel obligated to repay them?
Especially a non-trivial amount like $800?

Granted she *could* have been forthcoming with her hesitation to loan him money, but HE's the one asking for money. He should have been more transparent with the reasons he wanted money AND why he was asking her for bank info.

Most people (in my experience) when asking for money, volunteer why they were asking for money. Yes it was *only* $40, but he really should have explained to her why he was asking for the money.

Also, he didn't have any co-workers or other friends he could go to before getting to his ex? She should have been a ways down the list on people he hit up for money. And if he did go to other people first, then that's other folks who turned him down. So he shouldn't have been so upset with her.

As far as him asking for bank info, he should have told her, "Hey, I just had an idea. How 'bout I transfer money to your bank account and then you withdraw it and give it to me."

I understand that some folks here would give the money without asking the purpose and I respect that. But I don't think it's wrong either for the lender ask the lendee the purpose of the money.

In any event, since he's the one asking someone else to loan him money, he has the burden to explain to her what the situation is.

You're so right about the bank thing.

It really really threw me and that's cool people now are able to see he wanted to transfer money but he randomly asked it never really explained why and it was just so weird.

I assume to him he didn't explain because I wasn't the right bank but to get an attitude about it is so shocking to me.

Friday was weird because of him.
