Blackballed? Can you go into more detail? I thought her absence for so long had to do with her loss of recorded music (for her next album) when the equipment failed (?). As I remember, there was no back-up of what had already been recorded.

they offered to give him 50% profit on a comedy stand up movie they were interested in producing of him.

Chris was gonna get 50%; Tarantino 25% and Weinstein 25.

Chris came back and said he wanted 90% and they could divide the other 10%.

He didn't see work again in a movie for 10+ years until Weinstein offered him that small roll in Silver Linings Playbook

he and cash money said it was he who walked away though...

and based on his reasons why is pretty much the only reason i thought of him in this post...

he basically made it seem like they wanted him to compromise too much to go that mainstream route...

but you're right that he didn't really have any mainstreams hits...he had one or 2 features...

i give him honorable mention for peeping game early though cause most would have tried to fit that square peg in that round hole in that situation

and his verses on the mixtapes always caught attention (throw the Bentley off a cliff / call that a Bentley drop...)

I fully buy he just didn't want to rap like that anymore, but they probably weren't pushing him either. His first mixtape run after he left was FULL of mid-90s New York jazz beats before he hooked up with Monster Beatz to make that Neptunes album, and then Ski and his current crew brought him back jazz's way for the most part. He knew what he wanted.

Shuggie had a rep of being hard to work with said fuck the industry literally.

Paul Mooney wrote for Richard Pryor he said fuck white people never kissed ass and maintained his integrity. He is arguably the best comedian of all time.

she can't write Pop. and that's fine.

i think most of the ppl listed in this post don't have what it takes to be mainstream stars. so they didn't exactly make a 'choice' not to be mainstream. and several of them actually tried it and didn't make it and then kept on keeping on anyway. that's not exactly walking away from mainstream success.

anyway, Meshell didn't walk away from mainstream success. she never really had it. and she's not that type of entertainer - which is just fine. no shade.

fuck you.

Madonna statement about Mehsell and Maverick cuting ties. Mad stated that mehsell just doesnt want to even attempt at being a star or recognized and thats hard for a record company to deal with as they tried to promote her etc etc

it made it seem like they tried to pop her etc but she was not having any of it. I know you stated that Meshell doesnt fir a pop aesthetic anyways and I agree but that Madonna letter was kind of telling in that it shows she kind of was opposed to being one/walking away

the OP seeks acts who became big and decided that life wasn't for them and walked away.

Meshell wasn't ever big. she was on the verge of breaking out after her debut but then her follow-up kinda fizzled (i love that album) as did her 3rd.

1. that was a guest appearance on HIS record.

2. she at least tried it w/Cookie after that. so even if that record brought her mainstream success she didn't walk away from fame after that hit so she still wouldn't belong on the list being generated in this post.

fuck you.

What is considered walking away? Like leaving ALL the money on the table a la dave chapelle or taking control over your private life and moving out of ny/la like Bruce Willis/Demi

Cuz some of the people mentioned here are famous regardless. Russell Brand left money on the table but he can be on any morning show he wants and millions of people watch his videos.. so he is manipulating fame but not really walking away from it..

Arguably Chappelle is in a similar boat.. he is so big that even after he left he can do 10 sold out shows at radio city...

Or do you mean more of a one hit then said eff that and never made another record like that.. err homey Asher Roth comes to mind

I'd say D definitely walked away...

Lauryn.. hmm dunno.. because honestly.. she sold like 30 million records in only 2 albums.. where does she go from there?

agreed.

yeah but i think he walked away. so if he and Brand are similarly situated then i'd agree they both walked away.

naw. if he never made another record or if he'd stepped out of popular music i'd agree.

she hasn't exactly walked away either b/c she keeps performing. so i dunno.

Right before coming back to OKP and seeing this post. Brittany Howard talks about this same thing.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/22/magazine/alabama-shakess-soul-stirring-shape-shifting-new-sound.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=mini-moth®ion=top-stories-below&WT.nav=top-stories-below

I've heard a lot of artists say it's not about the money (usually before blowing up) a million times. But for some reason, I really believe it coming from her (at least for now).

she was being offered roles and she didn't like them. she didn't think she should have to only play stereotypical roles after winning an oscar.

her producers were salty though that she didn't campaign more for the film... and they def released a lot of 'she's difficult to work with' sort of comments in retaliation to her not coming to Cannes....

the city and just be amazed how they went from this 90s bubble
gum r&b group to now singing abt world peace and dressing
like Rastas.

I tried to explain it to her but she wouldn't conceded. I even stood up and turned around and said "see, its the same thing"

she hit me with a "fuck you" and did a 180 on me.

I was like "now you get it"

He had released the genuinely successful "Sally can't dance" (his earlier records were critically acclaimed and "cult" but not really successful even if "Transformer" was big in england due to the glam-rock/bowie-connection) where he worked with Steve Katz of Blood, Sweat& tears, complete with "crack" session-musicians and big horn arrangements and shit.

His next studio-album however was the double instrumental noise LP "Metal Machine Music" which at the time was considered one of the most unlistenable albums ever made (I think it's pretty cool but I like noise) and then spent the rest of the 70's doing what the fuck he wanted. While I guess some later albums like "New York" became fairly successful, they were just blips on the radar in the grand scheme of his discography. Basically, I think he prefered to be an underdog/cult-artist rather than a big star...

super stardom. Going from being poster boys of the grunge era to giving a big 'fuck you' to mainstream media outlets. I'm not even sure if they made any MTV videos post TEN. There may have been or two for Vs., but I honestly can't remember any.
