The cynic in me fears it'll take cases like THIS b4 the majority call for police reform to curb police brutality. I see it in the comments to this story.

..and the only similarities are:
- the dog wasn't secured - the dog was shot by police
outside of that, the situations were very different. the owner who picked the wrong time to get fly with the cops. he failed to secure his dog and unfortunately, his dog paid the price for it with his life.
..but ultimately, the owner of the dog is at fault.
while that officer was clearly wrong for shooting the dog, the onus was on the pet owner to properly secure the animal when answering the door (esp for police).
service dog or not, the owner is responsible for ensuring the safety of his dog and the people around them. people aren't always aware of/comfortable greeting dogs, so you can't assume that everyone knows the protocol. the officer gave into fear and unfortunately the dog lost his life.

this issue. it could very well be that the ppl commenting so fervently about this case @ laist.com are also as equally incensed about the killing of unarmed Black men by police. i dunno. i'm viewing all of this through a very prejudiced lens. i'm not saying i'm right about any of it and i hate that i feel this way.
