On Tuesday evening’s edition of MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes,” host Chris Hayes spoke with “CBS Sunday Morning’s” Nancy Giles and video blogger, writer and DJ Jay Smooth about Starbucks’ bizarre attempt at rectifying hundreds of years of systemic racism in the United States.

Hayes played a clip from Smooth’s YouTube video “How to Tell Someone They Sound Racist,” and Giles, clearly believing that Smooth was a white man, attempted to gently shame him for appropriating black mannerisms.

“I can’t not tease Jay about the kinda, like, brotha way he was trying to talk. Like, ‘Hey,’ with the rap music in the background, and like down with the people,” Giles said.

“I’m a rap guy!” Smooth responded.

“Yeah, I know,” Giles continued, “but it’s another interesting funny thing about race. Like, there would be some people that would feel that you co-opted something like that, and other people might feel like that’s his background and that’s really cool too… These are conversations, you know, ‘Yo, like ya know, yeah, if somebody takes my wallet,’ I mean it’s really interesting.”

“It’s also interesting because I’m actually black, but you assumed otherwise,” said Smooth, so patiently. “And this is the sort of awkwardness we can look forward to at Starbucks across America.”

Why assume that he is "trying" to be something other than who he is?

Now if she met dude and he was talking like Ned Flanders and assumed he was white, no one can fault her.

If after hearing him talk I think that should have raised some racial spidey sense. Maybe not enough to figure out whether he was black, latino or white. But at least enough to not venturing into assuming that he was "co-opting" something.

I think if I talked to dude for a while I'd might ask him what's his ethnic background, but you know, I'd get in trouble for doing that as well.

sort of anachronistic (he sounds like alot of the old heads my father is friends with), is a bit of a tip-off, given that he's at the very least swarthy like a mugg.

Jay was white, what she was bringing up really had no bearing on the conversation. It was a dead end at best. Why even make that comment in that environment?

But hey it worked in favor of his argument

Ms Giles particularly was saying a lot of great things, its too bad she had to slip up like that lol but all 3 of them rolled with it like pros lol. And the dude she thought was white had some great points as well.

I hope people are able to take more from that segment than that one embarrassing faux pas.

FOH ! Giles seemed a bit like she was trying to prove herself..Perhaps she doesnt do a lot of on camera stuff and was just a bit nervous. Though she clearly thought she was on a show between two white guys, perhaps that was reason for her somewhat "I know it all, allow me to school you" demeanor.
