"complexion issues"

so my wife is teaching a dance class to a woman in her 30's who just moved to Charlotte from New Orleans and the woman says:

"Every time I turn around there is a light skinned person in Charlotte. Y'all are everywhere"

and this woman wasn't even dark, just a regular brown skinned woman.

..and Charlotte is filled with tons of light, dark, brown people.

I always get a kick out of our people who are so hung up on complexion they overcompensate. One shade darker than the next and swear up and down they are dark as fuck.

I've said before how light skin folks tend to gravitate towards dark skin folks and vice versa? Not the case in New Orleans. I mean social circles are influenced by skin color there in ways I've never seen before.

I had a dude say to me earnestly "us like skin dudes have to stick together".

Same shit all across I-10 from Lake Charles to New Orleans based on my experience. It spans the entire state w/o fail. Opelousas, Shreveport, Natchitoches, Hammond, Alexandria, and all the other points that aren't on the I-10 corridor have the "colorstruck" thing going on.

If she's from somewhere where the average individual is really dark, then being in a place with a lot of light-skinned folks would be notable to her.

Certain parts of North Philly were black-as-night growing up, for example. Light-skinned (non-hispanic) folks just weren't around that much for whatever reason. Also, I never really saw biracial women until college.

Light/brown/dark women, and many weren't hood jawns either. It was like the suburbs in the city. Too bad that's been changing over the last 20 years tho.

She just moved to Charlotte (I think) and now there are unexpectedly all of these lite-skinned women around. Knowing how shit is back home, where dudes would probably OJ Simpson hurdle over her to get to the lite jawns, this naturally made her a little nervous.

I've seen the same thing happen to Philly women that are 6's... they move down south to Atlanta and realize that yes, they are actually a 6 (and not a 9 like they've been gassed-up to believe up here in the NE). Many come running back fairly soon.

still awkward and offensive. I mean what did she want? Did she think your wife was going to explain to her why there were so many light-skinned people in Charlotte? Was she trying to say she was uncomfortable? We will never truly know.

Let my love slide in and never slip out

It was always my awkward height or my big legs growing up.

Complexion issues are vicious and deep-rooted. So glad I was able to avoid that because I've seen/heard some stuff.

with color in Louisiana bro,,,

You have to spend some time there to really get a sense of it...

New Orleans is the home of the original Brown Bag Club...

and there were families there that were so color struck that cousins were marrying each other to keep that good light skin...

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
