"I've just come to the realization that I can't be productive while liste..."
Hip Hop w/ Lyrics, particularly new music. I gotta stop and listen to whatever they saying (no matter the depth or breadth). Same with R&B/Soul music to a lesser extent.
What brought on this revelation you ask? I've been listening to the top 10 songs on this TIDAL free trial and it's all rock/alternative or whatever you call it and I've been more productive than I've been in weeks. It only took me 30 aught yrs to figure this out.

i was bummed about getting a shit education in high school/college and spent the last 15 years listening to audio books in the background while i work, and eventually, my brain learned to listen to the book and focus on what i need to be doing. the flip side is, i have a hard time focusing on just one thing now and need multiple stimuli to be productive.

New albums are for my train rides.

More and more as I get older, I find myself paying attention to too many different aspects of the music, lyrics and production and there just isn't bandwidth left for anything more than a conversation about the music.
In a way instrumental music's worse... I can almost keep myself to only listening to the rapper/singer if it's a lyrical piece, but instrumentals I'll be out here critiquing the reverb on the snare or trying to work out what a bass patch looked like.

I get waaaay too amped up and vocal when that shit is on. I had on headphones once while working on a test plan some years ago and "Ante Up" came on on my mp3 player...
by the time I got to "From the street cousin, you know the drill..." I had looked up and saw my manager, team lead, and a couple of developers peeking in my cubicle. I thought I was just mouthing the words, but instead I was loud as fuck... especially at "You think I don't know that? BLAOW!! Nigga hold that! BLAOW!! nigga hold that! BLAOW!! nigga hold that!"
