Is sing-a-long material for a huge demographic of the population, I don't even listen to any of this stuff and I know the words to those songs, they are catchy as fuck. Beyonce is a much better artist and I would possibly pay money to see her perform, but we're talking about pop songs. Taylor Swift being left off is the funniest thing about the poll as she is pretty much the music industry today.

several of the songs on that last are not classics - like Last Friday Night. it was a #1 hit that will likely be forgotten 5 yrs from now. most #1 hits are that way.

i think gaga may have the most intriguing career when it's all over, yonce the most successful overall. rihanna has that sensual swag the others don't. katy perry is kind of a throwback, to when music shot for "fun."

I think the real surprise is how much Rihanna destroys Beyonce when you actually look at the songs. Single Ladies is really the only memorable Beyonce song, if you go back to Destiny's Child that's a slightly different story.

i think Yonce has more but only b/c she's been around longer and she's got those DC classics too (No No No, Say My Name, Indie Women, Bootylicious or Bills Bills Bills)

she has more hits than those and more #1s but when i think of Kelly C songs that have or will last - the ones that'll be played at weddings and reunions, the ones that even ppl who aren't fans of her or even her genre are likely to know i only count those 2.

it's not defined in the OP.
i'm defining 'classic' as a song that will be remembered fondly by a large # of ppl 5 to 10 yrs after its initial success. a song recognized and enjoyed even by ppl who aren't fans of the act or maybe even the genre in question. a song that still gets played 5 or so yrs after it hit. a song that's played at wedding receptions. at family or school reunions. a song that's regularly played on oldies stations.
if i'm using a more personal definition all of my lists would be different. i've listed songs i can't stand but that i recognize a large # of ppl around me have embraced - like Katy's 'Firework'. i fucking hate 'Firework' but i suspect it's a classic. ppl still seem to dig it a few yrs after it was first a hit.
most #1 songs aren't classics. most #1 jams are forgotten by most w/in a few yrs if not months of their success. a number of those songs will be dug up yrs later (usually about 20 or 25 yrs later). but the classics never really go away. they linger. and not just on my iPod, i mean i still hear classics on the radio or in stores and i hear ppl talk about them fondly, for the most part.
