"TIDAL"
Fri Mar-13-15 05:29 PM by dapitts08

so just finding out about Tidal because of the Jay-Z buy but i'm kind of stoked

http://tidalhifi.com/no

i will happily pay an extra $10 per month for FLAC/Lossless audio and since I have tmobile unlimited i'm not really worried about eating up data on my phone

just went ahead and signed up for my 7 day trial

anybody else using it?

seems like a smart business move for jay.....with the interest in pono it shows there is a market for folks who want to get back to better audio quality in their music

the key to happiness is not being rich;
it's doing something arduous and
creating something of value and then
being able to reflect on the fruits of your labor

..so far, so good.

still waiting to see what the true structure of the payout will be for the average artist/writer/producer, but i most of that won't be finalized until pending litigation is resolved.

other than that, i'm all for high fidelity entertainment experiences.

also read this article this morning....the fact that Jay is getting artists involved and give them the ability to upload their tracks directly makes me think this is going to be a really interesting platform ...

so far my only issue is with the mac app....it sucks...but the iphone app and web player are cool....been having some buffering issues today with kendrick's album but i'm assuming between the new sign ups from Jay's announcement and everybody and they momma listening to TPAB their servers are getting hit pretty hard

i have seen three things:

1. better sound quality (if you pay the $20-25 a month fee, but the $10 is the same)
2. videos (i don't need this. my phone has enough things on it as is, but is this included in the $10 price too? can i save videos to watch on the train later)
3. mixtapes are on this. (mixtapes are on spotify too but the ones ppl listed are all free so why do i need this? i only know this because someone was posting on another board about all the mixtapes they can hear now and we were like "but those are free on datpiff)

like i literally have no clue and i searched articles for info and they are all so vague or just focusing on sound.

If it turns out that people demand higher quality audio and are willing to pay for it, you best believe that Spotify, Apple Beats, Pandora, and others will just upload higher quality audio.

EDIT: And as far as actual content is concerned, the other competitors would just obtain licenses to the music it appears consumers want to hear.

Not sure if its as good as Tidal but lets be real...

The market for high quality streams is relatively low. The average listener give no fucks and prolly cant hear the difference.

Nothig wrong with competition but I'm not the type to jump unless I feel like I'm getting a deal.

Can you stream on more than one device?

Zune is still a good SERVICE.. the actual Zune PLAYER was trash and they did not support it.

interesting.
curious to see what this artist friendly game plan will be.
hopefully it is truly something disruptive and not smoke and mirrors.

http://mashable.com/2015/03/30/jay-z-tidal-for-all-streaming-blue-profile-photos/

edit: sidenote: i do see it sheepish for folks not in the know to turn their social media accounts blue BEFORE the announcement. how can you support something when you don't even know what it is yet? and i say that as a subscriber to tidal. that's bogus.

A lot of star power behind Jay's service. LOL at the last part of the video where Jay said "I talked to people on the streets. And they want this." What people Jay?

I'm good on this Spotify and Pandora are still cool by me. And IF I have to pay, Beats Music has very good audio quality and nice curated playlists.

Someone mentioned they have deals with the major record companies above. So if this is an "artist" led initiative what happens if taylor swift Bjork or Radiohead say they don't want their back catalogue involved with this thing? Spotify tell them to go fuck themselves, but this is artist led? right?

There has been no indication that they care about me as an indie artist. What's my payout? what's my % of the company if the top tier on stage get 3% each.

The people they put on stage are worth hundreds of million each..

people asking consumers to spend more money to make them richer.

The optics for this are terrible so far.

If they made it about giving back by helping smaller artist get properly paid for their art, alot of people would be able to justify for themselves the higher cost.

It wouldve been smart to get some artists on the come up (big but not megastars) not necessarily being owners but showing why it would be good for a new or unsigned artists and what the benefits are. Throwing a bunch of superstars in your face paints a different picture. A good start up is focused on the idea and why its convenient or beneficial. They hinted it but focused and pushed super stars in the consumers face without really saying much else. It was more so this is cool because im cool and i endorse it.

artists leave Spotify like T-swift did (and pay at Tidal or wherever artists like T-Swift might go to).

If illegal downloading is the free source, many, like me, don't want to "find" whatever I might get (viruses, etc.) in the "finding free music" process.

Maybe, I'm not the audience for this. No snark, but I haven't worried about viruses in 10 years and I work from home, so access to music isn't a problem.

what Tidal should have done is really pushed that it was better for artists and stated why rather than just constantly say its for artists because artists own it LOL. If they want to shift consumers to Tidal they need to first get all artists to see why Taylor Swift took her shit off of Spotify and offer better deals. That way if it becomes the norm to go to Tidal amongst the industry the consumers will go to who is providing the better choices in music. BUT that shit cant be 20 bucks per month.

Hifidelity sound isnt worth it if you dont have quality headphones or speakers to listen with

because Spotify does and I think that's the most important thing...you can listen to spofity free (although you have less benefits than the premium) , and no one wants to pay when they can get good service for free.

I have an iPod, I buy what I like and listen to it when I want.

That's pretty much the extent of my music technology...lol

Every now and then I listen to Pandora playlists at work, but that's about it.

How do you discover new music? Spotify has me checking out albums that I probably would never purchase but would like to listen to once or twice to figure out if I like it.

That's pretty much it.

Not saying anything is wrong with streaming services at all, I just don't completely understand how it works.

So is it that you are able to listen to any album you want without paying for it as long as you're online?

In response to Reply # 69

I pay $10 so I can find any album on Spotify and download it to my phone and I won't have to worry about streaming or data.

PROMO has a playlist he updates every week and it automatically downloads to my phone over wifi (or cell data if you choose).

I also follow other people's playlist and use it to dig for new artist because it gives you artist who have similar music.

Shit is awesome.

According to Spotify (and calculations by Hopes&Fears), Lamar probably made between $921,600 and $1,290,240 in twenty-four hours.

Now it isn't anywhere near CD days but who the hell buys CD's anymore?

I'm guessing advertising contributes heavily to what the artists are paid?

I'm not about to try to figure out the math, but as long as they're being paid it's cool.

But if that's the case, what does TIDAL accomplish that Spotify doesn't from an artist perspective?

More control in some way?

i don't have to load up my phone with stuff, i can try before i buy, share stuff a lot easier, and find music i never would have found otherwise extremely easily.

Spotify is like renting CD's. You can take them anywhere with your phone but you can't burn them and make physical copies.

but who burns CD's these days?

i use the app religiously but i rarely go over 1gb/mo anyway since the only time i have data on is in the car. 10min drive to work, maybe 5hrs/wk in errands. all other times is wifi.

which is another reason i favor Spotify over GMusic. Even at HQ streaming, Spotify doesn't seem to take the data toll or have the buffering issues GMusic does. idk if its a server thing or just a proprietary compression thing

if the service ever falls apart, i'm just gonna have to figure something else out.

87. "How is Tidal’s payout structure for artists different ...."
In response to Reply # 0
Mon Apr-06-15 11:26 AM by dapitts08

How is Tidal’s payout structure for artists different from competitors such as Spotify?

JAY Z: I know everyone thinks “new company, main business competitor is Spotify” but we’re really not here to compete with anyone, we’re actually here to improve the landscape. If just the presence of Tidal causes other companies to have better pay structure, or to pay more attention to it moving forward, then we’ve been successful in one way. So we don’t really view them as competitors. As the tide rises, all the boats rise.

SCHLOGEL: The royalty rates will be higher than other services. In addition to that, there won’t be that free tier that’s been depressing the recorded music industry, and frankly been a part of what’s been driving the downfall of the recorded music industry, is that free consumption. Music is not free, fundamentally. Someone came in and produced that beat, someone came in and sang that song, someone wrote that song. Someone came in to clean the studio afterwards. There is an entire ecosystem around this, and we’ve somehow come to believe that it’s okay to pay hundreds for consumer electronics but to pay nothing for the music that helps sell it. It’s around the education process, with that there will higher royalties. And then another point that I want to touch on that’s really important philosophically, not just from a dollars and cents perspective, is the equity ownership. All artists who come in — and this is an open platform, an open invitation — will participate in the equity upside. And that is important, too, because of that participation in the process, by having a board seat, by actually being an owner in this. It’s a different type of involvement.

What exactly were the contents of the document that was signed during the press conference?

JAY Z: Just a declaration that we’re going to work really hard to improve what’s going on in the pay system as we know it. You guys may have seen some of the stats like, Aloe Blacc had a song that was streamed 168 million times and he got paid $4,000. For us, it’s not us standing here saying we’re poor musicians. If you provide a service, you should be compensated for it. And not just artists — just think about the writers and the producers. Like an artist can go do a Pepsi deal or something — I shouldn’t have singled out Pepsi — but they can go get an endorsement deal somewhere and you know, go on tour and sustain themselves, it helps their lifestyle. But what about the writers who do that for a living? The producers? That’s it for them. What about Jahlil Beats, who produced Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot N**ga”? He went on to get a $2 million record deal or whatever, and Jahlil Beats just put the song out. So he wasn’t compensated for that song at all. There are dozens — more than dozens, there are thousands and thousands of those sorts of stories of someone who worked at their craft, worked really hard at the studio, they did their job and people loved it and consumed it and they just went home. I think we’ll lose a lot of great writers in the future because you have to do something else, because you can’t sustain a lifestyle, and I think that’s a shame. That someone has that talent and just isn’t being compensated because someone needed a business to profit off of their work. And we’ve seen that time and time again, we’ve seen it time and time again. Companies that pretend to care about music and really care about other things — whether it be hardware, whether it be advertising — and now they look at music as a loss leader. And we know music isn’t a loss leader, music is an important part of our lives.
