It could really use a second adaptation of the stage show (NOT a remake of the film) with a younger Dorothy and a reconceptualized vision of what a black Oz looks like that isn't inherently stereotypical.

I think MJ is great- but I'm not a huge fan of Diana in this.

Nas and T-Boz were the weakest links of that film, but it's still a beautiful looking movie with memorable characters and scenes

the plot was iffy and not that well executed. but the music-video style direction was cool and the charisma of some of the actors saved the overall cheesiness of the movie. to me it was decent.

School Daze is a good movie.

I spent half of that shit explaining black culture to them, but they were thoroughly engrossed in the storyline.

It's a good movie.

It works because of the location and that it isn't formulaic.

sort of a day in the life type thing. A viewer can sort of chill with it as opposed to getting caught up in a formulaic plot.

but it has weaknesses.

Just the fact that there were ZERO white folks in that movie about a Friday on the block in the hood had me geeked. So many of the jokes were on some subtle hood shit.

Like "What are you doing with that on your head? Don't get homeboy fucked-up"

lol.

And when Deebo told Smokey to "roll the dice," lmao. He was just making those dudes play dice with him, even tho they lost no matter what.

He has been eating off Boyz for a long time. The funny thing is that the first line in his obit will be these corny ass Fast N the Furious movies. He only took that line over because the original director abandoned it, too.

I remember falling asleep every time Roots came on, and we had to watch it in class, and I just thought that acting was horrible.

Lean on me had lots of quotes that are funny to repeat but as far as the quality of the movie itself? The movie was not meant to be a comedy, but I just found everything to be funny because everybody was over acting and shit was just not realistic.

You really took him to roof Mr. Clark? Okay... I know it's based on a real teacher but the acting is what made it not so good to me.

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka was funny, it was dated but that is the nature of that style of parody. It led to other funny films, too. It was good not great.

Lean On Me you also have to see in context, I think it would be kinda corny if it were released today but for its era, it's good.

Roots, I mean how does it suck? It could have been even better but overall it accomplished what it set out to do, which was ambitious.

How in the WORLD can you say these three movies sucked?!!!!!

I'm Gonna Get You Sucka was funny as hell!!!!! It had so many funny moments. And, it was totally spoofing blaxploitation. It was great!

I was about 7-8 when Lean on Me came out. My PARENTS TOOK ME TO THE MOVIES to see that ish!!!! It was an important film especially in the black community about fighting for education. It didn't suck!

Roots?!!! Now you are just trollin!

The Butler is less awful than just mediocre/lackluster

Haven't seen Beasts yet

Precious is polarizing and troublesome, but it's not awful. I think the film's themes and points get lost in the Lee Daniels sensationalism of it all in places, or at least overwhelming to audiences not used to those explicit sorts of indie films.

If a modern child sees The Last Dragon, they aren't at all as likely to develop a "nostalgic" attachment to it.

It's a terrible film, although I've become convinced at this point that it wasn't meant to be anything greater.

There are so many lighthearted comedies, musicals, etc. that I both enjoy and think are some good.

I can sit through The Last Dragon and be entertained by it, but let's be real: the acting is awful, the writing is worse, and the art direction and design were dated in the worst ways possible within weeks of the film's original release.

I don't dislike The Last Dragon. I just accept that it's a bad movie.

If my blackness has to be intrinsically tied to lying about The Last Dragon _not_ being a bad movie, I'll stage a coop and excommunicate those who disagree. I'll be Black, and the rest of you can pick a new classification.

I'm not sure about you, but when I evaluate a film, I ask myself these questions:

1. Does the film succeed in telling a good story ("good" as in well structured, clear unless intentionally obfuscated, has a beginning, middle, end, and clear plot threads through each part?)
1a. Are the characters successfully drawn?
1b. Are the situations plausible?
1c. Does the plot flow from point to point logically and with some sense of ease?

2. Does the director's work in staging the film and the choices in acting, pacing, etc. enhance the film, hamper the film, or keep it at a median level of quality?

3. What is the quality of the acting?

4. What is the quality of the visuals: cinematography, production design, art direction, hair/makeup, costuming and, if applicable, the special effects?

5. What is the quality of the music or score, if present?

6. What is the quality of the sound mixing and sound design?

7. Do all of these disparate elements work as a whole to present a cohesive picture?

Here's Purple Rain:
1. No. The story is all over the place, and the high variance of the plot in earlier drafts bears witness to the fact that this movie was less about telling a story with Prince as the lead than it was about just promoting Prince.
1a. No. See above. Prince's clique is generally cast to play heightened versions of themselves, but this ends up resulting in either throwaway characterizations (Wendy and Lisa) or inconsistent characterizations (Morris Day).
1b. Uh, generally.
1c. Not quite. Film meanders all up and around the plot, which is essentially an A-story of boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-wins-girl back and a B-story that's a modernized variation on the mortgage on the farm/let's put on a show plot (see also, "Can't Stop the Music", which is sort of like "Purple Rain" for the Village People, but even worse)

2. The director is really there to make Prince look cool, everything else be damned to hell. He succeeds at that task, but the rest of the film suffers from inattention and a lack of focus that makes it feel long, long, long.

3. Oh, come now.

4. Visuals are decent, save for some awful location night-shots.

5. Oh, come now, but for the opposite reason: one of the best song scores ever.

6. No complaints about sound quality

7. Hell naw, they don't!

thread.

The same sentiment still stands for The Last Dragon, though maybe the score could be raised to a D+ (it does manage to have a beginning, middle, and end, even if they're corny out the frame without quite enough plausibility developed to support said corniness).

And both are CERTAINLY better than Xanadu.

At least from my interpretation.

Cult classics are either....

1) Commercial flops that found a loyal audience after the fact

of

2) Commercial and Critical flops that found an audience who enjoys it on an ironic level.

there really was no movie like it. It was sort of like Crooklyn, sort of like Waiting to Exhale, but by and large it was its own thing. As such, there's little stereotyping and predicability going on; as someone said before, it created most of the tropes one could accuse it of.

Also, if a film is going for melodrama and does it right, that should not be considered a negative, Soul Food is absolutely a melodrama, but that's what it's going for. Hell, Imitation of Life is a melodrama too, but that's what IT'S going for.

Disney put the film on permanent moratorium and refuses to reissue it, to the ire of angry racist fanboys nationwide.

There are bootlegs strewn about (a store in Marietta, GA sells them and advertises such on their marquee outside!), but it's never been officially released on video in the US. In Europe and Asia, different story. Hence where the bootlegs come from.

give it to Ava Duvernay or Guillermo del Toro to remake as a magic realist horror/thriller, and I'd peep it again.

As it stands, tho, it was the best a studio could do with that book

It fails spectacularly at the number one thing a decent film should do, which is tell a story.

The characters are mere suggestions, the acting is awful, and the production design/technicals are all over the place except for the sound mix.

It also violates the number-one rule of the music-based film or movie musical: having musical numbers that both don't advance the plot and go on far too long. The key offender is the title song, of which all nine minutes are performed onscreen. All nine.

There's a nine-minute song in "hairspray" too, but it takes the film from climax to resolution and had multiple breaks of dialogue scenes to boot.

First, Purple Rain is not really a musical. People sing to each other or the audience in musicals. There aren't even that many rock musicals, but Dreamgirls and certainly Hairspray are far and away better films.

I've heard great things about Tommy, but I've never seen it, Shit, even Head, as bizarre and tripped out as it is, succeeds where Purple Rain doesn't as far as having a core theme and a core plot, and even a consistant tone of lunacy.

Purple Rain was like $983 to make, and $400 of that was haircare products.

The lead was a black guy who *still* don't like to talk in public, rocking French revolution gear in the 80s.

That movie should be unwatchable, and its far from it.

Nah.

Nah.

In response to Reply # 304

which is EXACTLY the budget a musician's vanity (heh) film would be made for today too.

A lot of what's wrong with PR are things that aren't going to drive the budget sky-high, like competent writing.

I understand the film means a lot personally/emotionally to people who were young/old enough to appreciate it in 1984, when Prince was at the height of his powers. But, like _most_ pop/rock star vanity vehicles, that doesn't make it a good film by default.

That whole category has been a mixed bag ever since the 1950s - there's probably a baby boomer board someplace where people of a certain age are trying to defend "Jailhouse Rock" the same way.

I looked at my watch like six times during that performance. Purple Rain is a power ballad; it's not like Prince was doing anything gripping on screen during that number the way he does during many of the others.

Outside of OKP and circles of black folks that worship anything Prince does just because it's Prince, the general consensus on Purple Rain is that it's a bad movie. It's more concerned with selling that soundtrack than it is telling a story.

Tyler Perry in it....

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

I enjoyed it as a kid and saw it multiple times.

I'm okay with writing it off as a dumb kids' film, in the same batch as a lot of late-80s/early-90s kids' films that aren't really much more than competent at best and inoffensively ludicrous at worst.

that should NOT be on anyone's "BAD" list....

Friday (This one is a head scratcher. It's a hood movie with smarts and a message...It was even reviewed VERY well by critics who usually look at such movies with scorn. Not to mention, it is a clever WEED movie done in the tradition of Cheech & Chong....)

Soul Food (Good family film and well acted....It ain't Terms of Endearment....It's a film about the American Black family tradition....Even complete with an electric slide type throwdown at a family celebration....No beef there....)

School Daze (this is just trolling at this point...stop it....)

Love Jones (A film about black love done in a respectful non Tyler Perry manner? Sign me up....)

Roots (It's not even a movie. It's a mini series....But still. Come the fuck on....lol....I'm going to leave it here. Some of y'all smoke crack. Lots of it....)

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

because of a freestyle battle and a performance at the old folk's party?

this is what I mean, you're so hung up on being a film snob you cant call it a great (black) movie

but this happens once a year where you come tell us our tastes in movies are inferior, some people just want to enjoy life and not be critics

In response to Reply # 274
Thu Mar-12-15 09:31 PM by b.Touch

And a scene where Kid makes up a rap at the old people's party?

And yes, the fully choreographed "Freestyle" battle?

It's a musical comedy the same way those Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello movies from the early 1960s are. In fact, the Hudlins will tell you that "House Party" is an updated version of those films.

If you'd prefer to just call it a comedy, that's fine too. That's if you think it's shameful to call a film a musical for some reason.

I'm no one's snob: I'm just (a) honest and (b) don't worry about trying to front to look "black enough" or "cool enough" for people on the internet. Nor do I feel the need to judge or address black movies into a box separate from everything else: House Party is a good film AND a good black film.

You don't have to put so much effort into being a dick just because you don't have anything else better to do with your free time, kid. If what I say upsets you so much that you have to make-up quotes for me, that may be your cue to log off and go read book or something.

it was crass and every time it tried to make a point it made me cringe.

the only part i liked was ving rhames fucking that chick in the kitchen. that was amusing. the big with snoop as a would-be rapist was memorable, but not in a good way. tyrese's acting was like watching a really fat guy with no arms try to play basketball.

Omar Gooding's performance aside (and I hate to do that to him), the movie generally succeeds at being the over-the-top hyperdream of an immature teenage boy that it sets out to be.

Some of the stupidest things ever said or done by characters in cinema come out of Jody and Yvette's mouths and actions, but that's because they, indeed, are idiots.

It's corny, stagy, and trails into the ridiculous, but it's precisely going for all three. It's like Empire. I can't call it excellent, I'm not even sure about good, but I can't take it all the way to bad. There's too many legitimately horrible films to do that.

^^^ it's not any of those, like at all. John Singleton said this was him returning to his roots and trying to take a hard look at Black masculinity. it was a serious attempt at serious film making. Various critics explored it on those terms. it failed, miserably. this is why I don't fuck with your eye for film. you're critiques are not consistent, nor able to judge films on their merits. those aren't shots, it's just why when I see you speak on a film, I know "I" can't trust your interpretation.

you def have your ideas on why you fuck or dont fuck with movies and explain them well, so I aint even mad at ya

really I knew this post would turn into this

good and bad movies being defended from one or two heads outside the aggregated consensus.

What doesn't make sense, then, is why so much of the film is clearly set up to be interpreted as nothing but ridiculous. Yes, the whole thing in the end has an important message, but it's wrapped up in situations that are essentially comedic, intentional or otherwise.

And honestly, I could give a shit whether you "trust my eye" or not. I don't exist for your approval, son. You people can have a civil conversation about film without trying to attack people's character or intelligence.

Every character is, to some degree, a stone cold idiot, and their monologues double-down on how idiotic they each are.

The quote at the beginning from the psychiatrist is ridiculous and untrue - maybe that was meant to be "deep"; I just found it corny.

My feeling was that we were supposed to laugh at these characters and how terrible of people they are, and the "message" comes in that we, the audience, are not supposed to act like them under any circumstances.

of such (he's SUPPOSED to be the corny, soft best friend, down to his highly contradictory move of killing Rodney and then being baptized. One of the bigger flaws in BB - one of the bigger ones out of multiples - is that this ridiculous turn of events isn't quite hit upon as ridiculous like it needs to be. All it takes is one more scene re: the investigation of the murder or something to put that across)

And I'm a fan of every sitcom character Omar's ever played. He's funnier and better looking than his brother.

He just gives too much "television" in this film. He's virtually out of place. Both he and Singleton should have worked on adjusting his performance more.

Harlem Nights doesn't outright suck, but it does not work as a whole film. The comedy parts work fine, but whenever the film has to lean heavier on the plot and action sequences, it falls apart.

This is a problem a lot of ambitious comedies that appropriate other genres of film fall into; Laurel and Hardy for example were notorious for making mediocre to awful films with great comedy bits and corny/unworkable romantic and musical main plots.

Janet Jackson's acting is, well, legendary for all the wrong reasons, and the plot is merely a suggestion rather than the backbone of the film. But the middle 60% of the film with the road trip is actually some pretty decent stuff. If you'd lost the last quarter that has little do with the first three quarters, it'd be even better.

And just having Tupac as one of you leads will elevate your movie by at least 20%.

I ask because WDIGM is a pretty clunky film full of lackluster photography and editing (which his a problem since it’s about 80% dialogue). It looks amateurish in ways that even some of Tyler Perry’s earlier films didn’t.

And even though TLAM works best when it works _against_ its concept of being a Steve Harvey “self-help” thing (every time Harvey turned to the camera she nI saw it in the theater, you could FEEL the energy drain out of the house), it has a better cast and tighter dialogue.

Both films center around mostly two-dimensional characters (I will give Tyler Perry some credit for making his and Sharon Leal’s characters transcend this deficiency), but TLAM has an excuse as the whole thing is something of a farce where each character represents a “type” on purpose.

But ultimately the problem is tlam was just completely forgettable '2 can play that game' romcom drivel

The relationships are tropes/types in WDIGM as well but they at least had some layers/history to them

It takes itself a lot more seriously so yea there is a bit of Apples and oranges there

The entire (high) concept of the film is mechanical. They aren't real people (which is why a sequel didn't and couldn't work).

As for WDIGM, the bottle break comes out of nowhere. A religious woman of God is going to hit her husband over the head with a wine bottle and casually walk away? She'd need to more clearly snap first; it can't just "happen".

I also have issues with how Tasha Smith is directed in either WDIGM picture. She's a lot better in everythign else I've seen her in - even awful "Jumping the Broom".

Meagan Good's acting was so bad that it completely ruins what could have been a good movie.

Seriously, watch that shit again and tell me her horrible line reading 3/4 through the movie doesn't just snap you back to reality and eliminate your ability to suspend disbelief.

If Meagan Good asked me to leave my family and follow her in to the wilderness I'd do it because she's easily one of the sexiest women alive, but goddamn she's a terrible actor. She's bordering on Beyonce levels of terrible acting.

That movie does not suck.

Hell, Jurnee in that movie dispels the notion that little kids can't act....and then Meagan Good resurrect that notion like she's reading from the fucking necronomicon.

Great concept, decent script...everything else just sort of fell apart.

The actors play the parts like they're still in the 1990s.

Gregory Nava's direction, outside of that expertly-planned ten-minute continuous performance shot, feels pedestrian/merely satisfactory.

The cinematography feels drab where it shouldn't.

For a movie about music, the incidental score is too plain to match and support the Frankie Lymon music.

at which time no one had ever seen such a film before.

It's not downright awful by any means, but it's definitely a debut director's film, and all that often comes with that.

It's one of those films that's more important for being the first _____ than for its own merits.

It definitely wasn't a great film, and probably not even a good film. It was a bit heavy handed at times (especially Furious). But, you did have Cube playing out a NWA fantasy, which was huge at the time (and even now, really), so there was that.

I think Menace was probably worse than Boyz by a fair margin though

it was a well written mess....

basically, the movie was entertaining and had great dramatic angles between his failure at work, his relationship and him turning to despair after all of this. Then, him fathering all of these children just totally fucked up everything.....like I couldn't believe what I was watching at that point. the movie just seemed too long while he was going to court for these kids. Just really dumb.

Like I said in the "What else are we watching" post, I thought the concept was great, but the execution was lazy on a few levels. Really should've been an amazing movie with that outline.

become.

I disagree with a lot of the takes here, but at least it's an entertaining discussion.

What's interesting to me about this post is that when we have the same discussion 5 years later it devolves to questioning peoples blackness (not necessarily you) and people responding seriously angrily which didn't really happen in the 300+ post from years ago.

This post really does show how this place has changed.

was fucking terrible.
People wanted to see and wanted to like a movie like that (see my next entry), so they won't say it sucked, but it did.
And I'm so tired of people who've never been in/to a protest showing them to look like warzones.

also fucking terrible.
Same thing as THUG. People wanted to see a movie dealing with these issues, PLUS this one was so stylized, iconic imagery and all that.
But as a movie?? Just bad.

And what's up with upping all these old ass posts?
