"Have anti-cyberbullying efforts gone too far? (Re:#dancingman)"

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/dancing-man-fat-shamed-gets-celeb-support-from-pharrell-more-201593

So I saw this story without seeing the actual clip. Apparently, a fat guy was dancin in the club and somebody filmed him and made fun of it. Subsequently, this was labeled fat shaming and celebrities have since taken up this fellow's cause by throwing him some manner of dance party.

However.

Is it your unalienable right to do as you please without fear of criticism or ridicule? I'm pretty sure that idea and the First Amendment are mutually exclusive. He has the right to dance in the club. He has the right to eat anything he wants. But if somebody laughs, that's their right too, because it's in public. I was pretty sure that was how things worked up until now. What did I miss?

why does an act of kindness that has zero effect on the bullies strike you as "gone too far," but the actual bullying doesn't?

A fat guy danced and somebody laughed at it. If that was worth a celebrity hashtag movement, Jackie Gleason wouldn't have had a career.

they're throwing the dude a party. or more likely they're inviting him to a party they were gonna throw anyway. it's a kind gesture, but it takes next to zero effort.

likewise, a hashtag movement takes zero effort. you were on twitter anyway, but now instead of retweeting some cat pics, you're shouting out a dude who got bullied. zero effort. there's a reason why it's called slacktivism.

if this is going too far, then rolling out of bed is going too far.

If you're a fat man, you know full well the comedic potential of your locomotion. You utilize that information as you wish. Either embrace the laughs or eat some tuna. But it's not that deep. People get cyberbullied until they commit suicide. This was just 4chan as usual.

In response to Reply # 6

he was dancing at a party, somebody took a picture. at some point, he was no longer dancing and someone took another picture. someone WHO IS NOT HIM posted those pictures online with a narrative that may or may not have actually happened (for all we know, the first picture was taken second and the second picture is of him walking in the party and looking down 'cause he dropped his keys). other people WHO WERE NOT HIM saw the pictures, read the narrative, and felt bad for him.

at no point did this dude post any pictures. at no point did he even realize he was the subject of an online convo. at no point did he ask for anyone's pity. he just woke up one day and saw that some people wanted to throw him a party. he asked for none of it.

so your hating on this dude for being some kind of oversensitive crybaby who needs to stop feeling sorry for himself is absolutely moronic. your hating on other people for making this a big deal, when in actuality a hashtag movement and a party takes almost no effort, is equally moronic. furthermore, no one is infringing on your right to be an idiot, so you picked the wrong story and the wrong subject to cry about. find something else.

I see it now. Every single person needs protecting from every possible offense no matter how small.

I complain because it's an international news story with a hashtag for awareness. It's not that deep. If you agree he deserves a party, cool. But the front page of Yahoo news is not the place for hurt feelings. Quick, who shot Tony Robinson this week, without looking it up?

If you can't say it with the speed you can say Darren Wilson, then this story garnered more of your attention than it deserved.

Right. That's the conclusion here. Meanwhile, you sound like a whiny bitch.

You're all in your feelings like a little girl over some fat guy getting the kindness of thousands, not to mention support from celebrities, instead of the ridicule of a few pricks on a message board.... and you didn't get a goddamned parade when you decided to stop being a fat bastard your damn self.

>not the place for hurt feelings. Quick, who shot Tony Robinson
>this week, without looking it up?

Meanwhile, we're talking about this because you're emotional because the 4chan guys were ultimately deprived of their "right" to belittle someone. Yeah, the world is turning into a bunch of pussies because of this. I'd say the greater threat is the imbecilic, insecure knuckle draggers like yourself who feel their own manhood being threatened by strangers showing kindness to other strangers, none of which you know and none of which effects you in the slightest.

>If you can't say it with the speed you can say Darren Wilson,

By equating me with a female minor, you seek to infer that something about me is less than manly. You should be ashamed.

See? It's easy to find shame material.

I'd wager the same happened to you and no one did anything for you so now you feel like "why did he get a party and i got a gym membership."

This guy in NO way feels sorry for himself. He has tweeted and said he loves dancing and going out and having a good time. He hasn't even addressed the situation at all...because he's too busy living his life and having fun. The party is NOT about just this man, but the thousands of people who want to go out and dance and have fun but get picked on, bullied, and laughed at by jerks who wish they had half the confidence that these people have.

I just don't get your disdain. This cause isn't worthy to you? Fine! Find one that is and post about THAT instead of inserting your negative energy into a positive cause. Use that hate for good.

Be blessed or be quiet my nigga.

That's how.

Listen, you illiterate dunce, I wasn't comparing the WWE situation to the fat man situation. That literally never happened.

I gave that example specifically in response to a statement 8 bit made.

You should feel ashamed for being so stupid.

What the fuck are you even talking about? 8-Bit was talking about growing from adversity, this adversity. Obviously in reference to this post. About this story. You brought up some unknown WWF trainer from the 70s and his penchant for kicking people with casts on.

Now if your fat life experience feels like that, I'm sorry. But it's not that deep. And don't tell me I can't read, this is what YOU wrote:

>At least that's how I came up, and how I view adversity in
>life. Nothing worth having comes easy. *Nothing*

That’s such a copout, as though people going out of their way to make things harder is a good thing. Life is hard enough as it is without people making it their mission to make life harder on others, and people who do that shit don’t get a pass just because the people they bully turned out ok.

In pro wrestling, WWE had a trainer named Bill Demott. Bill called guys faggots for taking time off for being injured. He once kicked a guy’s leg after it was broken and in a cast. He made tasteless jokes about a beloved legend who was dead while the dead mans son and a family friend were training at the time. He smacked a guy in the head who was out with a concussion.

Why? Because of this “nothing should come easy!” bullshit, as thought THAT was what was going to make them great. For all Bill’s abuse, he never produced a single superstar.

Uh… NO. Bill Demott has been a head trainer for the last decade or so. The stories I told happened during that time and it all boiled over last week. So, no, he’s not “unknown” and not from the “70’s”. You’re too goddamned dense to understand the point and didn’t even read the whole thing. I also didn’t merely talk about his penchant for kicking people with casts. I specifically spoke in response to 8 bit saying nothing in life worth having comes easy, and I spoke about how that statement was a copout as though that gave a pass to people who went out of their way to make things harder for others.

The last thing I wrote on that topic was what? That bill never produced a superstar. Nobody really benefitted from his methods. He made things harder in ways that were of no benefit outside of his own sadistic need to abuse people.

In other words, he was a bully. 8 bit was talking about how wonderful things turned out with his bullies, and I told him that his experience didn't necessarily translate to everyone else. I related a story of a bully that didn't do anything help the people he bullied in contrast to his personal experience.

Seriously, you can't be dumb enough to miss that.

>Now if your fat life experience feels like that, I'm sorry.
>But it's not that deep. And don't tell me I can't read, this
>is what YOU wrote:

You clearly can’t read, or at the very least you posses the critical thinking ability of a cantaloupe, because I just explained all the context and nuance your dim brain failed to grasp.

Fat dude needs to use that pain of being made fun of to motivate himself to change himself.

Or he can continue to be ashamed of himself. Because let's keep it real: The main shaming came internally, from dude himself. Look how fucking defeated he looks in that second picture.

A pity party for the poor, sad fat man is supposed to change this? lol, no wonder men continue to get softer and softer.

To keep it brief: I'd buy a beer for nearly every person that ever "bullied" me in life. Some of the dudes that picked with me became some of my closest friends once I stood up for myself. In-effect, all they really did was motivate me to improve myself, to achieve, to not settle, to stand up for myself, to be able to appreciate the growth I've made over the years.

At least that's how I came up, and how I view adversity in life. Nothing worth having comes easy. *Nothing*

I have no idea what the intent of this attention and the party is (didn't really read the article), so I take back any comment about that. Just saying that the *last* thing that I'd want is people feeling sorry for me.

I mean, good on you, but that’s literally the best case scenario when it comes to bullying, but even then, there are varying degrees of “bullying”. Not everyone is wired like you to use it as motivation. Further, not everyone is wired like THEM to be good enough to respect you when you stood up for yourself. Some “bullies” are just fucking around and don’t realize they’re actually hurting people. Other bullies are sadists and predators who know what they’re doing and that is precisely WHY they do it.

You cannot boil this down to your experience. That’s just the truth of the matter.

>At least that's how I came up, and how I view adversity in

That’s such a copout, as though people going out of their way to make things harder is a good thing. Life is hard enough as it is without people making it their mission to make life harder on others, and people who do that shit don’t get a pass just because the people they bully turned out ok.

It’s not a pity party. The guy wasn’t even aware that this happened. And you’re mentality works for you, but it’s on some “we don’t take charity!” bullshit when someone is trying to help.

The BOTTOM LINE of all this, truth be told? This is about the kindness of strangers. It’s about all these people having a heart and deciding to do something incredibly kind for a total stranger. That’s the takeaway here, and frankly the reaction of you and a few others reeks of insecurity as though your manhood would be challenged by such a gesture. You’re a smart dude and I just don’t see how you whiffed on this so badly.

So you're bothered that people came to the defense of a guy who was not only laughed at for being overweight and enjoying himself, but was done so very publicly?

Guess what? Free speech doesn't prevent the assholes who tried to shame this guy from being shamed themselves. In fact, the same 'right' you're defending to laugh at people is the same right people use to defend him and the same right people use to shame the pricks that shamed the fat guy.

Basically, you're an asshole who is upset that the efforts of other assholes to shit on a guy backfired. Cry about it.

They constantly get it confused with "the right to be an asshole without anyone reacting/responding in any way"..... which isn't a thing.
